DZ68BC with BIOS 28 and having problems. Please, I need some help.

Hello Intel Team and experts here.

Well, I have a computer I made about 3 years ago with Intel DZ68BC with BIOS 28

Intel i7 2600k

Kingston memories 16 gigas ( I used the ones on the intel motherboard list )

Windows 7 PRO 64 bits.

SSD intel 510 series 120 gigas.

Power supply Corsair 850 w.

The fact is my computer never worked well. I spent a lot of money to buit it. The computer looks like wants to frozen all the time, sometimes when I'm typing text gives me the impression that fought for a second and then skips letters.

When I use simple 3D features, OMG, it is a caos, even using my AMD HD 7970.

Even the SIMPLE second life www.secondlife.com that works perfect on INTEL IRIS, it frozen in my system with a powerfull videoboard as 7970, the best before the R9s ones.

PLease, I need a solution.

WHAT IS the best BIOS for this motherboard? The one I HAVE? 39? the latest? PLease user, please Intel, Please experts, I really need a help. please. I am suffering with it.

What I need for this machine works better? Should I update the bios? there any BIOS stable and better then the BIOS 28 ??

I will use the same hardware I described

Reinstall Win7? With all respect...Are you kidding? I did it 3 times and still the same. I need to know what is the best CHipset driver and the best Bios ( more reliable/ Stable).

Eddie,

Have you installed the latest BIOS available for your board in Download Center? If you are not overclocking your processor, you want the absolute latest (BC0042).

Have you installed the latest drivers available for your board in Download Center?

Have you installed the latest drivers available for your graphics card?

If the answer is yes to all three questions, let's do some analysis...

First, use F2 to enter BIOS Setup. On the Main scene, make sure that Active Processor Cores is set to All and Intel Hyper-Threading Technology is set to Enable and that the BIOS Version is latest (should see .86A.0042. in the middle of the version string). Next, scroll down to System Identification Information (it may say Additional System Information instead) and press . What does it say for Processor Signature, Microcode Revision and Intel Management Engine Firmware?

If the Intel Management Engine Firmware is blank or 0.0.0.0, it is an indicator that something went wrong in some previous BIOS update attempt. In this case, you need to attempt to install the latest BIOS using the recovery method. That is, place the BC0042.BIO file on a freshly-formatted USB 2.0 flash stick, insert this flash stick into a USB 2.0 port on the back panel of the motherboard, remove the BIOS Configuration jumper and power on the system. It should then proceed to update the BIOS (and especially the Management Engine firmware) and will tell you when you can power off and replace the BIOS Configuration jumper. Full instructions are here: http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/CS-023360.htm?wapkw=bios+recovery Desktop Boards — Instructions for Recovery BIOS Update. Remember, once you power on, unless it tells you that you can power off, you should wait at least 30 minutes before doing so.

If no issues so far, let's look next for a throttling issue. Go into BIOS Setup using F2 key and navigate to the Configuration tab and then down to the Fan Control & Real-Time Monitoring selection. Let the system sit idle for about ten minutes and then look at the temperatures displayed. The processor temperature should be at or below ~55°C. If it is higher, you need to improve your processor cooling solution.

Next, boot up into Windows and let the system sit idle for about ten minutes. Then, if you have Intel Desktop Utilities installed, double click on its gauge icon in the taskbar and, once its window opens, click on the Hardware Monitor tab. If not, run something like SpeedFan or Hardware Monitor or AIDA64. Look at the temperature(s) for the processor. They should be at or below ~50°C. If they are not, you need to improve your processor cooling solution.

If you need to improve your processor cooling solution, here's what to do: With the system powered off, remove the processor heatsink-fan unit completely. Clean all of the thermal paste off of the top of the processor and the bottom of the heatsink-fan unit. Place a 1cm squirt of new thermal paste on the top of the processor and install the heatsink-fan unit back onto it. Ensure that all four pins lock securely into the motherboard and that the fan is plugged into the CPU Fan header. Power up, make sure that fan is spinning and check the temperatures again.

Hope this helps (it's a start anyway)...

...Scott

P.S. Just so you understand, the Intel Chipset Device Software package DOES NOT install any drivers. The necessary drivers for the chipset are built into Windows. What the Chipset Device Software package is doing is configuring these standard Windows drivers to work optimally with your hardware. To ensure that you have the best version of these drivers, make sure that you have all of the latest updates for your version of Windows installed from Microsoft Update.

Dear N. Scott,

thank you for your reply.

I read in the forum that many people are happy with the BIOS 039.

I wonder what the most Reliable / more stable of all BIOS ?

I use old processor that does not require bios of last generation. Use the i7 2600K and do not do overclock. Kingston memories I use are the one in Intel's list motherboard. Yes, I feel as if my computer had a bottleneck, now is trying to choke and time not. It's a huge instability, especially if I use graphics from AMD HD 7970. I am not gamer, I am designer, use this video card just to view my work in Second Life, which is a very lightweight program, it runs on my old computer Windows XP perfectly.

I run the diagnosis of memory windows and did not present faulty memories. But MSinfo diagnosis presented a series of errors, I'll put some of them here.

IS really better install the BIOS 042? No one here in the forum had bad experiences with it? I read people happy with bios 039. I use SSD 51o intel for the system. The error may be it? The controller Marvell?

Well, here's reporting errors of:

I am getting a couple of things out of this. Temperatures are all reasonable; there does not appear to be any throttling issue. Despite how poor the CPUID HW Monitor tool is at presenting the environmental health sensors (it may understand how to access the SIO IC but doesn't comprehend how the board is actually using it), I can see that the power supply and on-board voltage regulation circuitry seems to be working fine.

Having a raft of failures and blue screens like this could be the result of problems in hardware or problems in software; you really cannot tell without further diagnosis. From a hardware diagnostics standpoint, you might want to download a copy of Passmark's BurnInTest and use their 30-day trial to run some tests. From a software standpoint, you could also look at Passmark's PerformanceTest product or (my favorite) Finalwire's AIDA64 product - both have 30-day trials - to see if you can spot where bottlenecks are occurring. I might also suggest that you try reloading Windows from scratch to see if this makes a difference...

I never talked about BIOS. My recommendation is to go with the latest available BIOS. Yes, it's true that the later BIOS releases don't support the same level of overclocking for the SandyBridge processors, but they do offer the benefit of all bug and compatibility fixes discovered since BIOS 28 was released. If you aren't overclocking, install the latest available.

Hello, Scott, thank you for your reply and I have some questions.

If I only update the chipset of my motherboard can solve problems I am having with the videocard AMD without having to update BIOS? My chipset driver is very old, I never updated since I bought my motherboard. The only update I did was put the BIOS 028. But never updated the CHIPSET.

Did you see the Memory errors I paste here? Why this is happening? The motherboard is not working well with the Memories? Not good comunication with memories? Or the Chipset is not working like it should work? Please, I need a big help with this . Orrr I need to install the new BIOS to the motherboard work well with my memorys and the video carrd too??

Thank you

Update both the chipset and Marvell SATA drivers. That improved things for me with a sound card problem.

Dear Scott and Paramountain. First of all THANK YOU SO MUCH for your attention and help. Now I will try to be very precise.

1st of all, Sorry If I repeat some questions, my English is not my Main Languange. So...This is my machine:

  • Intel i7 2600k 3,4 Ghz ( I don't make overclock ).
  • motherBoard Intel DZ68BC
  • 16 Gigas Kingston , KINGSTON MEMORIES 16 gigas of KHX1600C9D3P1K2/4G - 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 DIMM Kit of 2 HyperX Plug n Play Lifetime
  • Video Card AMD RADEON HD 7970 ( SAPHIRE)
  • Power Supply Corsair 850W ( TRUE POWER) .
  • SSD INTEL 510 series ( 120 gigas) for the OS.
  • HD SAMSUNG for files
  • I USE WINDOWS 7 PRO 64 bits

NOW let me try to describe my problem.

after the computer turned on for some time, he seems to have a bottleneck. Sometimes when I'm simply typing, it Chokes and then jumps letters, or even freezes for a few seconds and then appear all text typed. That's what I described now is not always, but often it happens.

In the 3D mode after a few minutes with programs Super light as is the case of Second Life, which works perfectly on older Radeons in IRIS Intel and other platforms, simply becomes unstable and does not want to run on my system, freezing after some minutes. It freezes the windows and no key wroks . dont work CTRL + ALT + DEL, dont work CTRL + SHIT + TAB, Dont work ESC. ,. I need to push the reset button on the computer and turn it on again to make it work, and after some time happens again. that's my problem. Now I will describe how my machine.

Important information when we set up the computer and called it the first time, it would not work in 3D mode. I had to install LUDIC Logix VIRTU the intel to make it work in 3D without freezing your computer. But I realize that this program can also be the cause of instability. Can be?

2) When I bought the hardware to built it, I bought the best 3 years ago. And I not the kind of user who don't take care about the hardware. I already had set up many computers before and this one I'm talking about has been assembled with all possible care.

3) The Kingston memories was not available in the shops and I did order directly from Kingston to the EXACT model suggested by Intel.

4) Since the 1st time I turned on this new computer when I opened a very light 3D program as the www.secondlife.com the machine freezes when I move something in 3D. So... I reinstalled a lot of times the windows to try to solve this and not solved.

5) After had tryied it, I updated my bios to the BIOS 028. But I am sure I never updated the CHIPSET drivers. ( 3 Years ago I only intalled the drivers for Sound I think ).

6) I am not a gamer, I dont make overclock, only sometimes I need to open something in 3D as the SECOND LIFE because I am designer and I need to see what I made in 3D view.

7) THE MORE IMPORTANT NOW: I need to know what I need to install in the system for this hardware configurtion. All drivers I need for this MOTHER BOARD> SO I will need CHIPSET driversm AUDIO drivers I dont remember if I installed SATA drivers or MArvell drivers. Should I really need to install a NEW BIOS? Or in my case I need to test 1st the CHIPSETS driver or anything more that I dont know? What I need to install for this MOTHER BOARD for a simple configurantion like me?

8) About the video card ( RADEON HD 7970) I tryed ALL versions of the Catalyst control ( the company driver + software) and IN all versions I found the same problem in my system. What make me belieave the problem could be in the INTEL MOTHER BOARD.

The help I would like is: I want to know what I need to install for my system for use it with this videocard . I dont intend to buy a new generation of CPU or new memorys, I only want it works. I preffer buy a new computer if I will need to buy a new CPU, Memorys and motherboard. I had so much headache with this motherboard. Please, help me with the corrects DRIVERS I need to install for this System with windows 7 PRO 64 bits.

Thank you very very much.

BEst regards to all. And sorry about my English, is not my main language.

Maybe you said it before, but your comment regarding Lucid Virtu is interesting. As you probably know, it allows the PC to choose either Intel on-chip or discrete card graphics depending upon the demand. Yes, it is possible that Virtu is causing the problem but it is more likely that the Radeon video card is causing the problem. I have not used Virtu on a DZ68BC, but I did use it on a DH67CL and there were no problems.

Here is my advice:

1) Install the latest chipset and Marvell SATA device drivers available on intel.com. Test.

2) Remove the graphics card and switch the video cable to the motherboard connector. Verify that you have the latest Intel graphics driver installed. Test.

As for updating the BIOS, Scott is correct in that you will gain some bug fixes. But neither of us knows for sure if it will fix your problem. You are going to have to make a decision on whether to update the BIOS, knowing that you cannot return to 0028 BIOS. Since you do not overclock, it is probably okay. But do the two things I mentioned above first.

Thank you Scott and Paraountain for your reply. So .. why I need intell Graphics if I am going to use the AMD videocard?

I think I nevers intalled chipet drivers in this motherboard, It may be for this reason the problems?

Another thing I do not know. How to configure the BIOS to use the graphics from AMD and that does not use the intel? I guess I never did it too, and could that be the problem, I do not know.

And at this page https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/56461/Intel-Desktop-Board-DZ68BC Drivers & Softwarehttps://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/56461/Intel-Desktop-Board-DZ68BC https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/56461/Intel-Desktop-Board-DZ68BC , wich ones I should download please? Please, you and Scott, help me to know wich ones I have to install in my machine. Thank you.

"why I need intell Graphics if I am going to use the AMD videocard"

We are having a language problem. I am only advising it as a temporary test to determine if the video card is causing the problem.

"I think I nevers intalled chipet drivers in this motherboard"

You installed a chipset driver, probably from the CD-ROM, because otherwise nothing would work. I do not understand why, but this driver does not appear in the list of installed software in Control Panel.

The chipset driver is here (allOS version 9.4.0.1027): https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/22153/Chipset-Intel-Chipset-Device-Software-for-Intel-Desk... Download Chipset: Intel® Chipset Device Software for Intel® Desktop Boards with 6 Series Chipset

The Marvell SATA driver is here (allOS version 1.2.0.1019): https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/21026/RAID-Marvell-SATA-Driver Download RAID: Marvell* SATA Driver

Perhaps Scott can explain why, but the Marvell SATA driver initially always appears to fail, but after a reboot, Device Manager indicates that all is well.

I have to agree with # paramountain. BIOS developers often lament that everything is blamed on the BIOS. While this is somewhat regularly the case (my BIOS buddies will be after me now), you need to remember that very little of the BIOS is actually used (or in use) once Windows has taken over and thus you (still) need to be pointing the hairy toe at the hardware and the drivers supporting them.

Here's the process I think you should follow:

  1. Remove the graphics card and boot up using Intel HD graphics.
  2. Download and install the latest Chipset Device Software package [FYI: this package *does not* actually install any drivers; it is sets of parameters that label the hardware and optimally configure the standard Microsoft drivers that support them].
  3. Download and install the latest versions of the Marvell SATA and Intel HD Graphics drivers. Even if you think you are already running on the latest, install them again to be sure. Why all these? I have seen
  4. Download and install the latest versions of the Realtek Audio and Intel Gigabit LAN drivers. Again, even if you think you are already running on the latest, install them again to be sure. Why install these? I have seen systems with symptoms similar to yours that were caused by Audio and LAN driver issues.
  5. Reboot and run tests to see if any of the issues are occurring. If they are, download and install the latest versions of the Realtek Audio and Intel Gigabit LAN drivers. Again, do this even if you think you are already running the latest. [Aside: Why update these? I have seen systems with symptoms similar to yours that were caused by Audio and LAN issues.]
  6. Reboot and run tests to see if any of the issues are occurring. If they are, there's no need to complete the following steps.
  7. Power down, reinstall graphics card and boot back up.
  8. Download and install the latest AMD Graphics driver. Again, do this even if you think you are already running the latest.
  9. Run tests to see if you see the issue occurring.

If, at this point, the issues are still occurring, you have a couple of things that could be the culprit (in order of my expected likelihood):

  1. The BIOS.
  2. The graphics card (or its driver). Unlikely if you came here from Step 6.
  3. The memory.
  4. The motherboard.

Let us know how it goes...

By the way, which camp are you in: uninstall old driver and install new one or just install new one and allow it to clean-up?

And your # 2 explains why chipset "drivers" do not appear in Control Panel -> Uninstall a program.

P.S. I suspect "pointing the hairy toe" does not translate so well. :-)

I uninstall the old and then install the new. There's more variables involved and thus more chance of something going wrong during an upgrade process. Oh, and if the uninstaller offers, tell it to delete all configuration/option data associated with the old driver; that way you know you are truly starting from scratch.

Yes, there's really nothing to uninstall.

For the non-old school software developers, "pointing the hairy toe" loosely means "most likely suspect" - but it just sounds better!

Hello. Scott and hello Paramountain. Thank you for your replies I will try to do this tonight. Let's see if it works.

Thank you again for everything. you both is helpening me a lot

BTW, how to install https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/21026/RAID-Marvell-SATA-Driver Download RAID: Marvell* SATA Driver , is not EXE file, is a ZIP file, how to install it??

Yes, Paramountain. , my English is not perfect, I understand 80% to 90% but there some expressions that I dont understand well. I understand only the simple and formal Englsih. hehehh

Download the file. Position the cursor over it and right-click the mouse. A menu will appear with "Extract all" being near the top. Single-click on that and it will unpack the ZIP file, leaving you with the file you require. Feel free to erase the original ZIP file.

And Scott's toe comment was not common English, not even close. I was born and raised in the U.S. and I never heard that before.
