I'd like to configure a RAID 0 with the on-board Marvell 88SE9172 (grey SATA ports). Via link from DZ77GA-70K motherboard's intel site page I can get to page http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/cs-012075.htm Desktop Boards — Configuring Your Computer for RAID with demo videos "Introduction to RAID creation".
http://www.youtube.com/embed/wwm0sZpDbPI Creating RAID 0 Using Marvell Controller - YouTube video from that intel page shows the process of creating RAID on Marvell ports. This video shows the possibility to change Secondary SATA mode to RAID. But there is no such possibility in my BIOS - "AHCI" value is blocked. Does the Marvell 88SE9172 chipset actually offer RAID? Is it possible to change Secondary SATA mode on DZ77GA-70K (or its twin DZ77RE-75K) ? Does some versions of BIOS unblock Secondary SATA mode value?
Thanks for joining the Desktop Board community.
I was able to setup RAID 0 and RAID 1 using Marvel controller with different motherboard model. The video actually shows how to setup RAID array with an Intel DZ68BC motherboard model.
According to your motherboard model, handles two Marvel ports but no RAID is available.
Hi Allan! Specifications of our motherboards similar in that they both have no mention about RAID possibility in Marvell chip. http://downloadmirror.intel.com/20248/eng/DZ68BC_TechProdSpec08.pdf http://downloadmirror.intel.com/20248/eng/DZ68BC_TechProdSpec08.pdf
But my specification says that the Marvell model is 88SE9172. Spec of DZ68BC does not specify the model of Marvel. If you have RAID and I haven't then DZ68BC has another model of Marvel or my BIOS prevents of using RAID with Marvel. Could you please say which model of Marvel your DZ68BC has? If we have the same Marvell model then probably some possibility exists to unblock RAID feature on secondary SATA.
The motherboard I tested was an Intel DX79SR. I was mentioning that the board that was used on the video is an Intel DZ68BC http://www.youtube.com/embed/wwm0sZpDbPI Creating RAID 0 Using Marvell Controller - YouTube.
As I mentioned, your board model does not provide RAID features using Marvel controller, this is only for storage.
Thank you Allan. We did our best. I just was trying to find real RAID that Intel promised to supply with DZ77GA-70K. But we can't find it. There is only Rapid Storage Technology RAID that is rather software then real hardware RAID. So I configured software RAID that my OS provides. I didn't use Intel RST because I have Western Digital Re disks that support TLER (I was inspired that DZ77GA-70K provides RAID and bought Re RaidEdition disks). But to work properly that disks should be controlled by RAID controller or errors could occur. There is only one Intel System/Chassis device type item included in WD Re compatibility list. Rapid Storage Technology is not mentioned. http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/cs/2579-771897.pdf http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/cs/2579-771897.pdf
But OS like Windows and Linux are included in the list. Consequently, OS-provided software RAID is preferable when using RAID specialized disks: both OS and Rapid Storage Technology are software RAID (CPU performes computations mostly) and have comparable performance but OS RAID is safer because some OS included in above mentioned list. Allan maybe you have more information about compatibility of Rapid Storage Technology and RAID specialized disks like WD Re?
Ok Allan, it will be better to post last question about TLER in separate topic. I'm fresh in this forum and I don't know about your affiliation with Intel. Maybe you have access to restricted information. But could you please share the source of your confidence of your statement : "...As I mentioned, your board model does not provide RAID features using Marvel controller, this is only for storage".
I got this statement from the technical product specification http://downloadmirror.intel.com/20956/eng/dz77ga-70k_TechProdSpec04.pdf http://downloadmirror.intel.com/20956/eng/dz77ga-70k_TechProdSpec04.pdf
See highlighted section: it only shows the Intel ports supporting RAID.
Hi Allan! Thank you for reply. Please pay attention to my statement from my second post: "...Specifications of our motherboards similar in that they both have no mention about RAID possibility in Marvell chip...". It's a very simple logic deduction so I have omitted the full description. Full description is:
DZ68BC (as you said) Has RAID on Marvell.
DZ77GA-70K has no.
But both DZ68BC and DZ77GA-70K has no mention about RAID in Marvell description in their corresponding Intel specifications.
Consequently, the absence of mention of RAID in Marvell port description is not the argument of real absence of RAID support by Marvell 88SE9172 within DZ77GA-70K.
I will trust to someone who says that:
- he is developer of this motherboard and 88SE9172 supports RAID but motherboards BIOS will not support RAID with Marvell; or will support in next BIOS revisions;
- or gives me the link to Marvell site where there is info that Marvell 88SE9172 do not support RAID (I can't found this info);
- or something in similar manner;
Someone who will take a glance at history of Release notes of DZ77GA-70K BIOS updates will notice that there was big issues with Secondary SATA setting in BIOS. The value of this setting was appearing and disappearing. So my doubt and insistence is understandable.
