I find that I an unable to boot from certain hard drives about 60% of the time with this motherboard. I have the latest BIOS update and am not seeing a pattern with the drives that work or do not. One drive is a 1TB physical disk, the other is a 25GB SSD and both are equally unreliable.
At boot I either get a message that no boot devices are detected or else everything works fine.
If I boot from another drive that works consistently, and have another that does not in another SATA port, I often do not have that other drive visible to my OS (Linux) or to the BIOS for that matter.
How can I narrow down the issue to get this fixed?
Let's try some basic troubleshooting in order to narrow down the issue and try to find out what is causing this behavior.
So please do the following:
- Test the system out of the chassis, minimal configuration please. (Motherboard, processor, power supply, 1 memory stick )
- Remove the CMOS battery and leave the system without it for about an hour. - Connect one hard drive to SATA 0. Restart the system.
- Then, add an additional hard drive and restart the system again.
- Go to the BIOS and check if both Hard drives are being detected.
- Use other SATA cables
- Connect the hard drives on a different SATA port

I tried your suggestions and get the same behavior. Sometimes the system will boot as it should from the hard drive, other times it will load the OS bootloader (grub) but then fails to boot at what looks like the disk mounting stage. However, most frequently no boot drive is detected by the BIOS at all.
SATA port/cable do not matter. Even tried a second motherboard of the same model, no difference.
This really seems like a BIOS bug to me...
Could you please provide a dxdiag report from your system to get further details on the computer being used?
To get this report, go to the Start menu, type dxfiag and then click on "Save all information"
Please include this information:
- What is the part number and manufacturer of the memory sticks you have tested with?
- What is the model and wattage of the power supply installed?
- Please let me have the AA number and Serial number of the motherboard. I have the same problem with DH87RL: most of the time it does not detect my Corsair Force F120.
The same drive works very well on my very old Intel P4 system. A Samsung SSD 840 Pro works fine with DH87RL, but not the Corsair drive (no matter which cable, which SATA port)
Sometimes the SSD is visible in the Bios/Boot menu, but it appears n Windows 7 only when I change the SATA port to hotplug-support. I never succeeded in making this drive visible to the Corsair Firmware upgrade utitlity.

We tried to replicate this issue but we were not able to do so. We think this is related to power supply compatibility.

All the drives appear in the SATA device list, just not on the boot screen, either UEFI or Legacy.

The systems boots without any problems from USB or DVD.
The installation of Kubuntu 13.04 worked flawlessly, the system resides on the SSD. Boot disc is sda.
With activated UEFI (not secure boot) the BIOS shows "No boot drive", and I can not choose any boot order. The legacy tab shows SSD (port0), HDD (port1) und DVD (port2) correctly. SATA options are AHCI.
A reboot with activated UEFI and activated legacy (DVD -> SSD -> HDD) yields something like "No boot medium found, please insert a proper boot medium and press key". If I do so, nothing happens only the message is repeated.
After a reboot with activated UEFI and deactivated Legacy yields the same result, only Ctrl-Alt-Del works.
After a reboot with deactivated UEFI and activated Legacy shows a blinking curser top left which jumps a line down after a second, then the system stops. Ctrl-Alt-Del works.
If I choose the boot drive with double click in the last configuration (or with F10 on startup) the system starts up with no problems.
What I've tried until now:
Putting the drives on different ports
Using only the SSD and no other drives
Removing the battery for about an hour (a bit longer actually)
I am thankful for any advice.

I tried 2 SSDs. Same problem on both:
Corsair Force 120
Oxz Vertex 2
WD Green 6TB seems to be recognized always.

Check if you are using the latest BIOS version available for your board and the latest firmware on your SSDs.
