I have an older board that I am about to upgrade to a faster CPU and I
tried to use the BoardID.exe utility in Windows ME. It didn't work as per
the instruction on the Intel download page suggested.
I doubled clicked on it but nothing happened.
I then went into a DOS window and tried to open it but nothing
happened. The file appears to be a DOS based utility so I
don't understand why the download page tells people to
simply double-click in Windows.
How do you actually use this thing. I downloaded the correct
file as per the operating system, so I'd like to use it to
be sure of my board's exact model and it's current BIOS
version, because I recall reading that in some cases
that going to a faster freq CPU sometimes requires an
bios upgrade. I'm going from a Pent 4 socket423 1.3ghz to a 2.0ghz.
I dare say it simly won't work in windows ME. if you can get into the BIOS and it is an Intel board you should have an option called system information it will tell you there what model motherboard you have. Regarding the CPU upgrade what you need to do once you know the motherboard model is check the compatibility list for it.
But since it's a P4 socket 423 board maybe it's time to get a new PC
Only I would know if it's "time to get a new PC" and that would be based on
whether or not my old one is no longer cutting it, as far as what I need it to do.
We all don't make the kind of money you make to just go off and buy a new PC.
Besides I have 2 brand new laptops but this problem applies to my older
desktop, which I use while I gave the new laptops to my college bound daughter
and my wife, and I sacrificed with the use of the old one. The "you should buy
new PC" comments are really not helpful in the slightest, but are actually a dig
at me. (an insult) It's also the easy way to answer isn't it?
Instead of helping me do the fix you just exclaim "upgrade". A six year old could
say that. Real constructive help would be nice.
The real question is why does Intels sight tell you can run this utility from
Windows when it is clearly a DOS utility. I'm going by Intel support site recommendations that upgrading from 1.3ghz to 2.0 may require a BIOS upgrade to version 14 or higher. I would therefore like to find out which bios version I actually have first before I mess with it.
I realize that you software developers, mainboard makers and CPU manufacturers make more money by pushing
things into obsolescence quicker, but Americans are going through rough financial times now.

I've been given a brand new socket423 2.0ghz to upgrade a 1.3ghz CPU, and Intel support suggests that I must
first check to be sure that I have version 14 or above to ensure total compatability. It a cost free upgrade for
me so nearly doubling my CPU speed for free VS $200-$350 for a total works upgrade is a non issue nobrainer.
I need the BIOS version for my D850GB board. That's all. Not to complicated at all I think if only the Intel
utility actually worked.

because the actual questions still remains to be answered. How to get the
ID utility to tell me what version I currently have NOW.
I don't want to mess with it if I don't need to. I think that's the right approach.

Hit F2 during POST and go to BIOS Setup Utility. On the main page, you should see a BIOS string starting with "GB85010A.86A". This will tell you the current BIOS version.
Are you trying to tell me that you work @ intel and don't
know that the setup screen is activated by F10 on this Intel D850GB board?
What number in that string denotes the version number?
All Intel boards uses F2 key to activate BIOS setup screen, including D850GB. It is documented in http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/d850gb/sb/cs-013240.htm Product Guide and http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/d850gb/sb/cs-013231.htm TPS.
BIOS string should look like GB85010A.86A.xxxx.Pyy.zzzzzzzzzz. Pyy here is the BIOS version.
Well I have an Intel MB, and F10 is what takes me into the setup.
I don't know what F2. But you need to know that F10 opens it up.
What number in that string is the version # ?
Most likely you have an OEM board, if it's in a Presario. Better double check:
1. What's the BIOS string you see in BIOS setup screen? Does it start with GB85010A.86A?
2. Check if there is a white label with barcode on the board. If yes, what's the AA# ? It's a 6-digit dash 3-digit number.
This is important, because if you have an OEM board but you attempt to flash a boxed board BIOS, it may either fail, or damage your board. So please check first.

So i am sure the Intel people on here know what they are talking about
Anyways going back to your original post where does it say that it will run in Dos? and what was the link you got it from?
And anyways what is teh BIOS string form the BIOS??? then we can tell you for sure, and what version it is.
Not to memtion that to enter BIOS set-up on a HP board you press .....

I know CPU-z used to run under WIN98 so it should also run in WIN ME
Under the motherboard tab you get all your board and BIOS information.
AFAIK the intel board utility won't work on oem boards even if it is intel. but if it does work i shld imagine it won't tell you anything other than that it isn't a boxed intel board
