The Intel DevCloud needs to be more Devish. But not too Devish. How long will that take?
I realize that many cluster architectures call for minimal OS images to be used on compute nodes. This can make node utilization more efficient and ease cluster administration by way of a minimal security attack surface and minimal set of packages to maintain and patch.
However, for a developer-focused cluster, it would really be helpful to have more dev packages in place. Some examples:
- https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/libxml2-dev
- https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/libxslt1-dev
- https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/openjdk-17-jdk
Following the chain of C or C++ package dependencies to download to ~/src and compile locally in ~/opt can be very tedious. And it is almost impossible to build anything without at least pkg-config. This is not as big a deal for languages with package managers such as Python, but much of the DevCloud tooling enables C/C++ and Fortran development use cases.
It seems that having more of Ubuntu's "*-dev" packages available via a shared file-system mount would significantly increase the usability of the cluster for exploratory development without affecting the compute nodes beyond including more files from a network mounted storage location.
Intel Support - please consider making more "*-dev" packages available on DevCloud.
