Hello,
I am experiencing an issue with ModelSim where I get errors related to the ini file during simulation.
I have already posted a question on Stack Overflow, but I would like to ask here as well for more insights
I'm using ModelSim (Intel FPGA Edition 20.1) and encountered an error when loading my project. The transcript window shows the messages expected integer but got "30p" :
Here is a summary of my issue:
When I try to run a simulation, ModelSim shows errors about not being able to open or replace the ini file
I have checked file permissions and ensured that the files are not read-only.
Reinstalling ModelSim did not resolve the issue.
Based on my troubleshooting, I suspect that the root cause might be a problem with the modelsim.ini file or its configuration.
Is there any recommended way to resolve ini file issues in ModelSim, or any best practices for managing ini files across multiple projects and tool versions?
Thank you for your support.

You will need to set up the environment variable SALT_LICENSE_FILE in your PC. Questa read the environment variable to fetch the respective license .dat file.
Please checkout the user guide below.

Does the behaviour occur recently? Does the simulator tool run succefully before?
You might try to delete the Modelsim registry entries and see if the issue resolves.
*WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Use in caution and check the reference link below before performing the steps below.
- Shut down ModelSim
- Start Registry Editor by enter regedit in the Start menu.
- In the Registry Editor, Edit > Find, to search for a folder named "Model Technology Incorporated"
- Using the Registry menu, export the selected registry key to make a backup. Store the .reg file in a safe location in case you need to import it at a later date.
- Delete the entire folder.
- Launch ModelSim
If the issue still persists, could you try to use Questa Intel FPGA Starter Edition instead of Modelsim Intel FPGA Starter Edition.
As stated in the KDB: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/programmable/articles/000088418.html
The Modelsim* - Intel® FPGA Edition (including Starter Edition) will be replaced by the Questa* - Intel® FPGA Edition (including Starter Edition) starting from the Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition Software version 21.3 and Intel® Quartus® Prime Standard Edition Software version 21.1 onwards.
If there is no concern for you to upgrade the design to the latest Quartus version, we always recommend the users to use the latest supported tool and its latest version.

Richard Tan

I downloaded the Questa Intel FPGA Starter Edition and obtained a license, which I received as a .dat file via Gmail. I placed the license file in the alterpro folder, but the program does not start even when I click the program icon. Please help me resolve this issue.

First of all, thank you for providing a solution to my previous issue. However, even after accessing the link and loading the license on my computer, I am still experiencing problems. Could you please advise on what steps I should take next?My license is fixed computer license..(the keyword is "fixed"..)I remember i chose fixed between "fixed" and "float" and my computer name is shcrshonhs)
Here is what I have already tried:
1.I made sure the environment variable (LM_LICENSE_FILE or INTEL_LICENSE_FILE) points to the correct license file location.
2.I rebooted my computer.
Despite these efforts, the issue persists.
Could you please provide further assistance or let me know if there are any additional troubleshooting steps I should follow?
Thank you for your support.
Best regards,

Thank you very much for helping me resolve the issue. Thanks to your support, Questa Intel Starter FPGA Edition is now working properly. The problem was caused by my mistake in entering the physical address of my computer in the license. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused, and I truly appreciate your prompt and helpful response.
Have a great day!
