Arria V GX FPGA Starter Kit: Unexplained MAX V Failure

Hello,

at our insitute we have two setups each consisting on an Arria V GX FPGA Starter Kit Board with a Terasic SFP-HSMC Card daughter card.

Both setups worked for some time each and then failed for no apparent reason: In both cases the Board was connected via USB to the programming computer and to the power brick supplied with the kit. On powering on the starter kit the Max V package overheated and vented the magic smoke. The boards no programming was performed at that time. The connected computer was a Centos7 Box running Quartus 18.1 and the corresponding JTAG daemon.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? This would be helpful in identifying the reason for the fault as we would like to continue using this setup if possible.

Thanks!

Hello

Welcome to INTEL forum. May we know, is this the board that you’re referring to? https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/programmable/products/boards_and_kits/dev-kits/altera/kit-arria-v-starter.html

Yes this should be the one. The part number is: DK-START-5AGXB3N and the number of the Terasic daughter card is P0040. Thanks.

Hi, Could run the BTS test to confirm the board functionality. Perform the BTS test with Quartus v. 12.1.0.0 as recommended and set all DIP switch back to factory default state.

Hi, due to measure taken in response of COVID-19 I at the moment cannot access the lab where the boards are located. On the other hand I would assume that the test of the board will not work as there is a hole in the MaxV package, which emits smoke when the board is powered on. Our technician also mentioned it could be a safety issue to continuously apply power to the board.
