I am building a workstation with the following CPU characteristics:
2x Intel Xeon E5620 2.40 (12MB/1066 4C).
Could you please suggest the optimal software (running on MS Windows 7
Professional 64-bit OS) for Fortran algorithm developments, in order to
take a maximum advantage of the system?
Please indicate all the necessary software as well as possible alternatives (e.g., version of Microsoft Visual Studio, version of Intel Fortran compiler, version of IMSL library).
Thank you in advance.

If you purchase the most recent version of ifort with IMSL, you should be able to download ifort 2011 xe for no additional charge, and ifort 2011 xe with IMSL when that becomes available. The latest ifort 11.1 supports Windows 7, although the first 11.1 did not. If the IMSL 11.1 pre-dates Windows 7 compatibility, it should be possible to apply the Windows 7 compatible update to it.
ifort 11.1 works with Visual Studio 2005 and 2008 on Windows 7. VS 2005 installation on Windows 7 is more complicated than 2008, as it involves installing the special Vista/7 compatibility service pack after the SP1. The MSVC++ from VS 2008 SP1 is more up to date than the one from VS2005 SP.
With ifort 12.0 aka 2011 xe you will have the additional possibility of installing under VS2010.
If you don't need C/C++, both ifort 11.1 and xe 2011 provide the VS2008 shell so you don't require a separate VS installation.

A problem here is that one cannot yet buy a license for Visual Fortran Composer XE 2011 with IMSL We hope to have this resolved soon.
