Cannot build demo project on Galileo Gen 2

Hello, everyone.

I am doing a project of testing FreeRTOS on board Galileo Gen 2. I have encountered an annoying problem when I tried to build the simple demo project of blinking a LED. Here is the context:

  • IDE: Intel System Studio IoT Edition
  • File location: FreeRTOSv9.0.0\FreeRTOS\Demo\IA32_flat_GCC_Galileo_Gen_2\Support_Files\startup.S (It's a file written in assembly language)
  • compiler: MinGW GCC
  • section of code where problem appeares:

gdt: .space (GDT_BYTES)

  • problem: when click project->build all to build it up, it gives this message which is assigned to the code above:

.space specifies non-absolute value

Please help, thanks a lot.

Hi John_cjh,

I think it will be difficult to get some help in this forum, since FreeRTOS is not officially supported.

I've found just a few references to FreeRTOS in threads, and none of them seem to be useful.

Thank you for your response. Actually, I have been working on the websites you mentioned before I came here for help. Yet I can't find information involving this problem. It seems like no one else has met this bug. I will try to contact engineers of FreeRTOS for further information.

Hi,

" .space specifies non-absolute value" means that need to provide an absolute value, not a calculated value as in your case.

Try the following:

gdt: .space 64

Also note that:

.space size , fill

This directive emits size bytes, each of value fill. Both size and fill are absolute expressions. If the comma and fill are omitted, fill is assumed to be zero. This is the same as `.skip'.

Problem solved.

It turns out that the environment of windows hasn't been correctly configured.

The instructions of building up GCC compiler is quiet vague in http://www.freertos.org/RTOS_Intel_Quark_Galileo_GCC.html FreeRTOS running on the Intel Galileo (x86/IA32 Quark SoC X1000) .

Here is what I did:

->Install cross compiler mingw-get-setup.

-Download MinGW from sourrceforge.net.

-Install it by double clicking .exe. It is recommended to install under C:\ directory.

-Follow the instructions given and in the Basic Serup menu, install tools: mingw32-

base, mingw32-gcc-g++,mingw32-gcc-objc,msys-base.

-Finish the installation. Add in paths of windows environment the following paths:

C:nMinGWnbin;

C:nMinGWnmsysn1.0nbin;

->Install x86 GCC elf compiler. Download the pre-built i686-elf-gcc GCC tool chain refer-

enced from the osdev.org website. Add the bin directory in your path:

...\ghost-i686-elf-tools-win32\ghost-i686-elf-tools\bin;

-In Eclipse, go to project properties->C/C++ Builder->Tool Chain Editor", use "Cross GCC" and "CDT Internal Builder".
