Flashing BIOS on Joule: Access denied

I have been trying to flash the bios on Intel Joule board but getting error messages

Intel(R) Joule Flash.bat version # 1.1.5

- Provisioning the eMMC

Access is denied

- Checking for RPMB...

Access is denied

WARNING: Unit has a RPMB area and will not support the Slim version of the CSE! This means if you are trying to flash a BIOS version greater than # 010, it will fail!

This issue can NOT be fixed!

- Downloading the BIOS...

Access is denied

- Clearing NvStorage...

Access is denied

Not sure what am I doing wrong !! Any help is appreciated.

I am speculating that due to this reason, WinPE is not booting up.

Hi Ankitmathur,

Thanks for reaching out.

I tried to replicate the error, but I couldn't. I just followed the next guide without errors: https://software.intel.com/en-us/flashing-the-bios-on-joule

Let me investigate more about it, I'll let you know if I have updates.

I appreciate your patience

Hi Leonardo,

Tried it again a couple of times but no success. I am still getting "Access is denied" messages.

The bigger problem is that I am not able to boot up Windows. As soon I try to boot up using Pendrive, it displays a message "Boot failed" for a split second and goes back to BIOS menu.

I was believing that BIOS version is not updated which is why this problem is happening and hence I tried to flash the BIOS.

The version on the board is "GTPPA16A.X64.0143.B30.16081120114" whereas the procedure says BIOS version should be "GTPP131A.X64.0143.B30.1609232056" (source: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/iot/Docs/GetStarted/joule/GetStartedStep1.htm Step 1 of 4 - Get the tools | Windows IoT ).

Any help here would be much appreciated

Thanks

Ankit

Hi Ankit,

We couldn't replicate the issue, so we don't know why this is happening to you.

Did you try to flash the BIOS with a different computer? And you can also try to open the command line as administrator.

Let us know when you tried our recommendations.

Hi Leonardo

Thanks for your reply

Sorry but I do not have any other machine with Windows 10. Tried your suggestion of running command line as administrator but to no success.

Hi Ankitmathur,

It isn't necessary to have Windows 10 in the host computer, according to the guide you need a host computer with Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 (both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows are supported). Do you have access to any of them?

We will be waiting for your answer.

Hi Leonardo,

Thanks for your suggestion

I tried with another host computer and this time got it working. Thanks for your help.

However, I am still not able to boot up Windows. As soon I try to boot up using Pendrive, it displays a message "Boot failed" for a split second and goes back to BIOS menu.

Anyways that is a separate problem I believe.

Will keep trying

Thanks for your help

Hi Ankit,

That's great, it is good to see that you could flash the BIOS. About your new issue, I recommend you to try to contact Microsoft, check the last part of the link that you gave us: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/iot/Docs/GetStarted/joule/GetStartedStep1.htm.

Have a nice weekend.

Well, the "We could not replicate the error" may have been tagged as a correct answer by Intel, but the actual problem is likely that you have to elevate command prompt to Administrator privileges ("Run as Administrator") when using Flash.bat

Andrus.
