For the D2000 dev kit-

Does operation of OCD require any associated FW loaded into the D2000?

Does it use OCD code running on the host, which connects to the D2000 via the board's JTAG I/F thru the FTDI FT232H?

OpenOCD does not required any FW to be loaded to the D2000 in order to connect - you just need to run the version of OpenOCD that supports D2000 (distributed with ISSM toolchain).

It connects to the board's JTAG interface via the FTDI.

You also have the option to bypass the the FDTI using a debugger - Olimex and Flyswatter configuration files are provided.
