General Question about the Edison boards

I am looking to get started with Edison. I am a programmer by trade so want to find out a few things:

If I want to control a PWM motor controller, and maybe add a few of the sensors from https://software.intel.com/en-us/iot/hardware/sensors IoT - Sensors, actuators, and shields to bring your project to life | Intel® Developer Zone do I NEED the Arduino version of the Edison, or can I directly work with sensors from the plain Edison?

Ultimately i`m looking to build a small autonomous robot that sends some information from sensors to a linux server for processing, then receives coordinates of where to go next - which are crunched and fed to the PWM. If I can get away with hooking several sensors up to this, that would be great!

Hi CarlosA

Both should work but you need to consider the voltage restrictions in the pins. If you use the Arduino Expansion Module you can use up to 5V in the pins but if you are going to use the Edison Module the voltage limit is 1.8V so you may need to use voltage shifter in order to use sensors or shields that work with 3.3V or 5V.

Thanks, I see now .. has the solder pads rather than screw terminals. Perfect!

Reading the docs it seems straight forward, but this is still new to me.

About the motor board. I haven't seen projects with that specific shield but take a look at the http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/CS-035257.htm Shield Testing Report you will see some tests with other shields that may help you.

Thanks, right now i`m really playing with the Edison, C and led's. I don`t have a lot of electronics experience so i`m trying to figure out how to get the 1.8v to "level shift" to power a 5v motor controller or any MOSFET, etc - using PWM. So far haven`t found a lot of info, but found a MOSFET that seems to accept 1.8v directly in the NTE2390.

Eventually of course a full board like the roboclaw will be what I use, but need to crawl first...
