HTTPS instead of HTTP

So I recently posted another question related to access points, but I wanted to start a new thread so that these answers can be more easily searched. I recently re-flashed my board, and I am attempting to use pip to install some python modules. However, pip insists on using HTTPS instead of HTTP. I know I have fixed this before, but I can't remember how I did it. A lot of the resources out there are pretty outdated.

What steps does one take to get a fresh out-of-the-box Intel Edison to access HTTPs sites?

I've run

opkg install openssl python-pyopenssl libssl

but there it's still not quite working. Thoughts?

Yet again, after hours of hunting, I've come up with an answer (from /thread/78543 here):

wget https://bootstrap.pypa.io/get-pip.py

root@edison:~# python get-pip.py
