Issues to get Ref-Os-Iot image for Joule

Just following Intels website recipe to install Ref-Os-Iot on Joule, when I download the Joule Module Configuration Tool I am getting an old version 2016.4.012 instead of version 2017.1.001

from this url https://software.intel.com/en-us/iot/hardware/joule/downloads https://software.intel.com/en-us/iot/hardware/joule/downloads

Both the windows and Linux buttons link to the obsolete 2016 version!

Where can I get the 2017 version?

Thanks

You can manually download the OS image (.wic.xz) from https://download.01.org/ref-os-iot/releases/ Directory of OS Images then use the configuration tool to write it to the SD card by selecting "use existing image located at"

Hi Jadedragon,

Thanks for your interest in the Intel® Joule™ Platform.

Like Hilal said you can manually download the OS images from these links:

- Ostro OS: https://download.ostroproject.org/builds/ostro-os-xt/latest/images/intel-corei7-64/ Index of /builds/ostro-os-xt/latest/images/intel-corei7-64

- Ubuntu OS: https://developer.ubuntu.com/core/get-started/intel-joule Intel Joule | Developer

- Yocto OS: https://download.01.org/ref-os-iot/releases/ Index of /ref-os-iot/releases

Then you can use the Configuration Tool in order to make a bootable device or you can create your own bootable device by using Win32 Disk Imager or with Rufus (https://software.intel.com/en-us/node/721476 IoT ).

Please let me know if any questions come up, have a nice day!

Best Regards,

Thanks Jose and Hilal

I successfully downloaded full-image-intel-5xx-64.wic.xz from https://download.01.org/ref-os-iot/releases/1703/5xx/ https://download.01.org/ref-os-iot/releases/1703/5xx/, unzipped it and wrote full-image-intel-5xx-64.wic to a SD card, inserted it into my Joule and booted from it and installed it very easily to the Joules eMMC memory.

I assume I can't use the same "https://download.01.org/ref-os-iot/releases/1703/5xx/ full-image-intel-5xx-64.wic" image to do the same on a Intel Edison module, right ? Do I have to build it (https://github.com/01org/ref-os-iot GitHub - 01org/ref-os-iot: This is the official distribution of the Intel(R) Reference Operating System for the Internet… ) or is there another location for an Edison Ref-os-iot image?

I would like a system that have Intel IoT libraries to support UPM/MRAA, BLE(5),MQTT,OPENCV3 and ROS for both Joule and Edison! Is there any Intel instructions as how to do some of that? Or any documents/guides as how to use Ref-os-iot and what is included in it?

Thanks again for your help!

Hi Jadedragon,

Unfortunately, there is no official Ref OS IoT for the Edison, but you can download the official Yocto* Poky Image from here https://software.intel.com/en-us/iot/hardware/edison/downloads Downloads for Intel® Edison Module | IoT | Intel® Software . I would encourage to use this image and install the libraries UPM/MRAA, BLE(5),MQTT,OPENCV3 and ROS. Nevertheless, you should know that it would be possible to flash the Edison with the Ref OS IoT, but this image is not supported by us, at least in the Edison.

Here are some guides that I think that you might find interesting:

Thanks Jose,

These are great links for my Edison, I will use the Yocto*poky for the Edison.

I am a bit surprised of the Ref-os-iot for Joule! Wifi is not up, no browser is installed, and I have problems installing packages..

When pushing the browser icon it respond with

"Choose your preferred web browser application!"

Select Default web browser for Xfce?

Am I using the latest correct version?

Cat /etc/*relesase

ID="ref-os-iot"

NAME="Ref-Os-Iot"

VERSION="1.0+snapshot-20170320"

BUILD_ID="20170320142821"

What package manager should I use?

Opkg update -> command not found.

Apt-get update

Reading package lists…Done

and apt-get upgrade nothing to do either.

Please help me to download browser and enable wifi.

Thanks

Hi Jose

Thanks for the links that helped me setting up wifi using these commands:

# Connmanctl

>Scan wifi

>Services

>Agent on

>Connect enter passphrase

Reconnect automatically after reboot.

I don't know how I can get apt-get to work so I can install a browser!

Can you give me some pointers as how to achieve that?

Ref-os-iot feels like a little step down from Ubuntu 16.04 LTS..

How would you compare Ref-os-iot vs. Ubuntu Core( Snappy ) on Joule when used for UPM/MRAA, BLE(5),MQTT,JSON,OPENCV3,ROS,Boost,Gimp,Webcam.

Cheers,

JadeDragon

Hi olafp,

Could you be so kind to tell me exactly which commands you are using in order to install the web browser?

Now, regarding the comparison between Ref OS IoT and Ubuntu, I will definitely stick with the Ref OS IoT. This because of all the advantages that offer and the guides that are always handy for developers, for example using a camera with the Joule:

- https://software.intel.com/en-us/node/721499 IoT

I will be waiting for your reply, have a nice weekend!

Best Regards,

I add my voice for the need to have a package manager in the Ref OS, apt is already there but not active without proper sources.list as I asked here:

still waiting for response regarding that.

Hi Hilal,

We are aware of this thread , we are still investigating this issue, soon you should receive an update on that thread.

We appreciate your patience.

By the way I saw that you reported the issue with the image version 1702, if you check this link https://download.01.org/ref-os-iot/releases/ Index of /ref-os-iot/releases you will find that version 1703 is now available, just in case you want to try it.

Have a nice day!

Hi Jose,

Yes by now I have tested the 1703 version and it has the same issue regarding apt-get calls. Looking forward to 1704.

Thanks,

Hi olafp,

We appreciate your patience.

After some investigation, we realized that we support a package manager in the Ref-OS-IoT Image for Joule for easier deployment of compatible packages. However, at the moment there are no pre-built packages available. This feature is planned for a future release, we apologize for the inconvenience this may cause.

Thanks for your understanding.

Best Regards,
