Serial number

Hi All..

I have two edison boards having image 3.10.98-poky-edison+

one is the mini breakout board and another one is the arduino expansion board where we are changing the edison compute module.

While we are flashing the image on the edison there will any change in the serial number after flashing??

where i can find the serial number of edison arduino expansion board from

cat /factory/serial_number

FZEDA614D01PNX501 for one of the edison board which is matching with the number on the edison compute module.

For another board with same image as 3.10.98-poky-edison+ where i am getting the serial number as same

cat /factory/serial_number

FZEDA614D01PNX501

where for the second edison board the serialnumber on the compute module is

FZED445D0206G501 where i am unable to get this number on the /factory/serial_number.

I am connecting both the edisons to the same network.

please do needfull..

Thanks

Hi M.Srujani,

That's weird, I flashed 4 different Edison modules and I got their respective Serial Number. Can you try to do it again (flash)? It is just to make sure that you are getting the same serial number.

Let me know when you did it again.

Hi M.Srujani,

Did you get the serial numbers again? Are you still getting the same serial number on both boards?

Just let me know when you did it.

Hi Leonardo,

I have totally of 4 edison boards.

2 expansion and 2 mini breakout board.

In both of them I am able to get the serial number correct but where as for both mini breakout boards I am unable to get the correct serial number.I an getting the serial number of one of the expansion board.Even after flashing today also I have the same serial number.

I have inter changed my edison module on both the expansion boards. If I interchange the modules will there be any serial number change??

please do needfull..

Thanks

Hi M.Srujani,

The command cat /factory/serial_number always gives the serial number of the Edison compute module, so if you have an Edison module on any board you will get the serial number of the Edison module, if you use the same board with a different Edison compute module you will get a different serial number.

I'm not sure if you are expecting to get the serial number of the boards or you are getting the wrong serial number of the Edison compute module. Let me know if you still have problems with this.

I hope you find this information helpful.

Hi guys,

is there a way to get the serial number "before" the board is flashed? The flash tool pulls a generic image from the intel servers and must write the /factory/serial_number file based on some location for this data during that process?

Thanks,

Nick

Hi NIckAri,

I'm not sure if I'm understanding you correctly, so can you explain me your questions?

Just to clarify, if you flash your Edison it doesn't affect the serial number, you will always get the same number.

I'll will be waiting for your explanation.

Hi Leonardo,

I wanted to know if there was a way to extract the serial before flashing the image. I am building custom images and want to create serial number specific configs at build time.

Thanks,

Nick

Hi NIckAri,

I'm understanding a little, honestly I'm not sure what do you mean with "serial number specific configs"? Can you please explain me this part? I'm really sorry for all these questions, but I just want to make sure what do you need.

I appreciate your patience.

Hi Leonardo,

apologies for the delay. I was on the road.

Just to clarify I have a number of devices and I want to create custom images for each one. I want to uniquely identify these by the serial number and make changes to some settings on the image at build time. The default image is generic and when flashed you can retrieve the serial number as described above so there must be some way to query this serial number before I flash an image to the device?

Thanks for your help.

Hi NickAri,

Thank you so much for the explanation. Well, I don't think that this is possible when you are building the image, in that case I recommend you to create a custom image for each Edison.

You can also create a standard image with all the recipes that you need, and add a recipe that creates a service that retrieves the serial number of the Edison and remove some packages depending of its. (About how to remove the packages I suggest you to check this link: https://communities.intel.com/thread/107744 https://communities.intel.com/thread/107744).

I hope you find this information helpful.

Have a nice weekend.

Thanks Leonardo,

on a related note do you know how I can change configurations such as the WiFi network SSID and credentials from the command line (in the same way that the board configuration tool does?).

Thanks,

Nick

Hi NickAri,

I think that all the thing that you want to do is with the following command:

configure_edison --setup

With this command you can set the device password and name, and you can also connect to a Wi-Fi network.

Have a nice day.
