Hi Umesh@pro3,

Thanks for your interest in the Intel® Joule™ Platform.

From your reply: "im trying to edit sshd_config file but its showing that its only read only file". I interpret that you are modifying a file, but you are having permission issues. If this is correct have you try the command chmod +x file-name? If I'm not interpreting right your issue, could you be so kind to elaborate a little more, so that I can provide you the proper guidance for your issue.

I will be waiting for your reply, have a nice day!

Best Regards,

i have build Ref_Os for intel joule board (base image)

Referred steps given at https://github.com/01org/ref-os-iot GitHub - 01org/ref-os-iot: This is the official distribution of the Intel(R) Reference Operating System for the Internet…

instead of bitbake full-image

i build

bitbake base-image

and follow the same procedure for making uSD as bootable device and boot from uSD card.

i have boot it from uSD card and changed boot order to eMMC.

now i want to send a application file to board through scp. its not allowing me to send file through scp ,it requires to change "# PermitRootLogin yes" from vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config but,

it says that '/etc/ssh/sshd_config' Read-only file system.

if im trying to change the permissions by using "chmod" then

root@intel-5xx-64:~# chmod 777 /etc/ssh/sshd_config

chmod: /etc/ssh/sshd_config: Read-only file system

if im trying to copy file from pendrive it says can't create file Read-only file system.

even i tried to remount using sudo mount -o remount,rw /

it shows-

[ 1566.878042] EXT4-fs error (device mmcblk1p3): ext4_remount:4695: Abort forced by user

mount: cannot remount /dev/root read-write, is write-protected

i tried to change password but it says that

root@intel-5xx-64:~# passwd

New password:

Retype new password:

passwd: Authentication token manipulation error

passwd: password unchanged

before this log come im able to change in fs-

root@intel-5xx-64:~# [ 97.813429] sdhci: Timeout waiting for Buffer Read Ready interrupt during tuning procedure, falling back to fixed sampling clock

Hi Umesh@pro3,

Thanks for explaining your issue in such a detailed manner!

Actually, I was able to reproduce your issue by mounting a USB stick on my Joule, then I was able to copy the file inside it. Please see the image below, so that you can understand better what I'm trying to explain.

You should know that I was using the full image from here https://github.com/01org/ref-os-iot GitHub - 01org/ref-os-iot: This is the official distribution of the Intel(R) Reference Operating System for the Internet… , I will start building the base image, so that I can perform the same experiment with this image.

Have a nice day!

Hi Umesh@pro3,

Thanks for your patience.

I was able to build the base-image and flash it on my Joule, then I perform the same experiment of mounting a USB and copying a file on it. Unfortunately, I didn't encounter any errors, please see the image below.

Are you sure that you are mounting correctly, your USB stick?

I will be waiting for your reply, have a nice day!

Best Regards,

Hi Umesh@pro3,

I'm a little confused, when you say "one more thing when im installing os and while working on board this log msg interrupts". Which OS are you installing? From your first reply I understood that you were using the Ref OS IoT base-image, I'm I right?

Now, regarding the BIOS update, are you following the steps in this guide https://software.intel.com/en-us/flashing-the-bios-on-joule IoT ? If you're, please be sure that you are using a Type-A to Type-C USB cable.

I will be waiting for your reply, have a nice day!

Best Regards,

Hi Umesh@pro3,

If you are having problems installing the Ref OS IoT, I would encourage to download the latest Joule image from https://download.01.org/ref-os-iot/releases/1704/5xx/ Index of /ref-os-iot/releases/1704/5xx and create a bootable device by following these instructions https://software.intel.com/en-us/node/721472 IoT . Then you can flash your image by following these guides:

- https://software.intel.com/en-us/node/721477 IoT

- https://software.intel.com/en-us/node/721470 IoT

Now, regarding the "read-only" issue, I would encourage to follow the steps that I provided here . I have summarized the steps in here:

1) Navigate to media: cd media (Be sure you are on your home directory, if you aren't use the command cd ~ )

2) Create a directory call "usb": mkdir usb.

3) Mount your device: mount dev/sdx /media/usb (Where sdx is the name of your USB drive).

4) Copy the file: cp media/usb/name-of-the-file /path-where-you-want-to-copy

Have a nice day!

Best Regards,

CP cmd ,and regarding to pre-build os its having same issue with https://download.01.org/ref-os-iot/releases/1704/5xx/ Index of /ref-os-iot/releases/1703/5xx and im even tried with ostro-os. same issue with this os also.

now im using Ref_os ....!!

Hi Umesh@pro3,

I understand that there are two issues, one related to copy a file from your USB and the other related to the image that you are using.

We will investigate more about your permission error, in the meantime could you be so kind to format your USB drive and try again. Also, I would encourage to change the USB drive if this doesn't work.

Finally, I would like to know what you meant when you said "now im using Ref_os ....!!", does this mean that your image error was fixed with the new release? If it wasn't I would encourage you to download the newer version of the Ref OS IoT from here https://download.01.org/ref-os-iot/releases/1704/5xx/ Index of /ref-os-iot/releases/1704/5xx .

Have a nice day!

Hi Umesh@pro3,

Thanks for explaining us what image you are using!

Now we are following this guide https://software.intel.com/en-us/node/721524 IoT , in order to setup the SSH connection. We did not have issues editing the file /etc/ssh/sshd_config, we would encourage to follow these steps:

1) In Joule console, run the command vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config. This will open the Vi editor.

2) Find the line "# PermitRobotLogin yes" and uncomment it. You will have to press the "i" key to enter in edition mode in the Vi editor.

3) Save the file.

4) Then, you should get the message "/etc/ssh/sshd_config" 133L 3629C written" which confirms that you just edited the file. If you want to double check, then run the command cat /etc/ssh/sshd_config.

By the way here is an image of the steps that we follow:

We hope you find this information useful, have a nice day!

Best Regards,

Hi Umesh@pro3,

Looking at your log it seems like there is an installation error when you are flashing the image to your Joule, please see the images below:

This is your log:

This how your log should look if your installation was successful:

Please be sure that you are following the instructions to create a bootable device https://software.intel.com/en-us/node/721472 IoT and the guides to flash the image to the Joule:

- https://software.intel.com/en-us/node/721470 IoT

- https://software.intel.com/en-us/node/721477 IoT

If you still encounter the same issue, please try to change your USB drive.

We will be waiting for your results, have a nice day!

Hi Umesh@pro3,

I'm sorry to hear that the issue persists. Reviewing your BIOS logs we realize that you are using the BIOS 161, the Ref OS IoT 1704 is only compatible with 1F1 https://download.01.org/ref-os-iot/releases/1704/Ref-OS-IoT-1704-ReadMe.txt https://download.01.org/ref-os-iot/releases/1704/Ref-OS-IoT-1704-ReadMe.txt . Please follow these steps https://software.intel.com/en-us/flashing-the-bios-on-joule IoT in order to update your BIOS.

If this doesn't work, could you be so kind to attach some screenshots of your errors?

We will be waiting for your results, have a nice day!

Best Regards,
