Another NUC11PAHi7 with fan running during sleep mode.

NUC11 sleeps and wakes when it is supposed to, but the fan never shuts off. I assume it has modern standby configured by default. 

All drivers are current.

I am not the only one reporting this problem. Is there a solution other than reverting to legacy S3?

It happens with the NUC11PHKi7C as well on both Windows 10 and 11.

It does not happen all the time but once it starts the fan cycles on and off over and over and the NUC itself is very hot to the touch.

Often times when this happens it also becomes impossible to wake the device and it has to have the power plug pulled to force it to shut down.

Fortunately my NUC does not display the serious issues you describe. It sleeps when it is supposed to and wakes immediately.

I have experimented with the BIOS settings a bit. I found if I set the minimum duty cycle to a low number, like 10%, I cannot hear the fan run when sleeping (but I’m certain it is). However doing this seems to disrupt other fan behavior and I will occasionally get very high, short duration fan speeds for no apparent reason.

When did the issue start?

Did you make any recent hardware/software changes that might cause this problem?

Hello Alberto,

This is a new NUC11PAHi7 purchased in December 2021.

The fan running while sleep has always been an issue.

No hardware problems that I am aware of. The PC will enter sleep mode normally (flashing LED, etc) but the fan never shuts off. It continues to run at the same speed as when awake.

I am running Windows 11, fully updated.

This is a home-based PC only.

The ssu report is attached.

You may try to revert the Sleep Mode to Legacy S3 Standby  by adding the registry key as advised in the linked Microsoft Document.

Thanks for linking that Microsoft document. The entire docs directory is a treasure. 

I am aware of the registry tweak for S3, but I have not tried it. It may turn out to be the best solution.

Hi Dave,

I've never liked the Modern Standby and in my Gen 10th NUC, changed to Legacy. However,  I did this in BIOS settings, since the Legacy S3 Standby is still supported here. But this is not the case in your NUC. I suggest that in order to protect the Windows, before applying the registry tweak, set the boot mode to SAFE. Only after applying this registry change and rebooting in SAFE mode, set back to NORMAL.

I’ve read that switching between modern standby and S3 requires OS reinstallation. Does the safe mode procedure avoid this inconvenience?

Exactly. I've changed the Sleep Mode few times already, always in SAFE mode. No needed reinstall Windows.

In order to set  Windows to SAFE mode:

1. While in Windows, press Windows key + r. Run msconfig
2. Chose Boot tab and check Safe boot.  Reboot your system.  Windows will boot in SAFE mode.

after changing the Sleep Mode:

1. While in Windows, press Windows key + r. Run msconfig
2. Chose Boot tab and uncheck Safe boot.  Reboot your system. Windows will boot in NORMAL mode.

While attempting to set SAFE mode I received a warning that BitLocker is enabled and I will need to provide a recovery key at boot. I did not know Win 11 HOME enabled BitLocker by default.

I do have the keys printed. Is this something that I need to be concerned with?

Having dealt with bitlocker nightmares more than a few times I can honestly say that for 99% of users, it is more trouble than its worth.

Disable it, allow the decrypt and then never deal with it again.

I've never used  Bitlocker encryption. So, better before starting this procedure, switch the Bitlocker OFF and decrypt the drive How to Remove Bitlocker Encryption In Windows 11 | Turn Off Bitlocker

If you want, later you will be able to reenable it again.

I turned off BitLocker.
Rebooted in SAFE mode.
Added the PlatformAoAcOverride registry key.
Rebooted in normal mode.

Powercfg shows S3 is available. S0 is not available. PC enters sleep w/o fan running. Success!!

With the NUC11 I lose the amber flashing power button in sleep mode. The BIOS indicates this is only available with Modern Standby S0. It blinks the blue LED in sleep.

I was curious about BitLocker and went to see if it was possible to re-enable it. The control panels are gone. A search returns nothing. No big as I have never used it on prior PCs anyway.

I found this link that discusses BitLocker in Win 10.

It says Modern Standby support is required for BitLocker. Maybe explains why the function seems to be gone now.

I’m curious to know what would have happened had I not turned off BitLocker (and decrypted) prior to disabling Modern Standby.

If this was a new build I definitely would have experimented. As it is I have too much time invested in setting the NUC to try it now.

The information in this thread accidentally fixed another bug that appeared in the NUC11PHKi7C.

Prior to trying to fix the overheating while sleeping problem there was also a bug where it was impossible to change power plans.

Now that I have run the S3 standby fix, I have also gained access to modifying power plans.
