Bad UBUNTU SERVER 20.0.4 or RAM

I've just installed Server 20.0.4 LTS on my brand new NUC11TNHi7 (barebones) but things are not well. Yesterday I was constantly getting Kernel Panic restarts. Today I'm trying to flash MemTest86 to make sure my RAM has not been damaged or incompatible (as I read some have experienced this) I have disabled safe boot which should allow me to boot from USD. I have set USD as priority in my setup (F2) but nothing. On F10 interrupt, I'm unable to select my flash drive - it shows both my SSD and Flashdrive, but will not allow me to select "UEFI:JetFlashTranscend 4GB 8.07". The drive is a few years old - not sure if that could have an effect. Lexar SODIMM 3200 32GB x 2 and Crucial 2TB SSD NVME

My kernel panic restart loop started again halfway through installing my application (was doing a required update while installing) Here's the exact moment it goes into the kernel panic:

Scanning Btrfs filesystems. Done.

Begin: Will now check root file system ... fsck from util-linux 2.34 [/usr/sbin/fsck.ext4 (1) -- /dev/nvmeOn1p2] fsck.ext4 -a -CO /dev/nvmeOn1p2/dev/nvmeOn1p2: recovering journal.

Next line is the start of the Kernel panic - not syncing: Timeout: Not all CPUs entered broadcast exception handler

I have installed Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS on the NUC in an attempt to fix and I have brand new problems now. Have started a new thread.

Hello SATSNKAMOTHO,

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.

We would like to investigate further about this case. In order to do so, please provide the following information:

  • What was the result of testing the RAM with MemTest86?
  • Download the Intel® System Support Utility for Linux and attach the report to your reply.

Currently, only Ubuntu 20.04 LTS is officially supported on this NUC model, so that may be causing troubles, but we will look into that.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

  • What was the result of testing the RAM with MemTest86?  It ran for ±12hrs, made 4 passes (test 1-13 4 times) and came back with 100% pass rate.
  • Download the Intel® System Support Utility for Linux and attach the report to your reply.  Since it was a clean result, do you still need this?

I've since installed Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS on my NUC but 1-2 hrs into running it as a validator on the Ethereum testnet, it freezes.  The only way to reboot it, is to hold the power button in for 10s and then to restart.

I have 64GB of Lexar SODIM DDR4 3200 RAM and a 2TB Crucial NVMe SSD installed.  While running, it never goes above 6GB RAM usage. Also the CPU is not labouring either.

Have done a MemTest86 for 12hrs (4 passes) and no issues found - 100% pass.

The only error it shows on startup is a failure to activate swap /swapfile.  Seems it's trying to load "swapon" but it can't: No such file or directory. It states that having swapping is a dependency in the next line.

Any advice?

In order to be able to work on this further and provide any recommendation, could you please provide the SSU report? https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/18895/26735/intel-system-support-utility-for-the-linux-operating-system.html?

Hello SATSNKAMOTHO,

Please try installing Ubuntu client instead, since the Intel® NUC11TNHi7 is not intended for server operation. If the issue persists with Ubuntu client, please let us know, and we will further investigate on this.
