Bios update 0083 broke HDMI video on my NUC 8i5BEH

I have a NUC 8i5BEH. I'm trying to run Ubuntu Linux 18.04.4 (Trusty Tahr) on it (which is another story entirely). Yesterday I upgraded the BIOS from version 0041 to version 0083 using the .BIO file from Intel and the F7 BIOS upgrade method. The upgrade completed without any problems but when the system rebooted the video looked like this.

I tried the BIOS recovery procedure by removing the security jumper and rebooting the system with the USB drive containing the .BIO file for version 0083 connected. The system went through the BIOS recovery process and when it rebooted the video was the same.  The system appears to be stuck in the UEFI shell. I tried booting by entering the UEFI shell commands but I don't know if they didn't work because the system is stuck in the UEFI shell or if I wasn't entering the proper commands. Any ideas on what to do next?

I had the same behavior after a BIOS update (about 1.5 years ago?)

For me (and many, many others) it helped to reduce the amount of memory allocated to the graphics in the BIOS.

Have you tried that?

That's a waste of time. The memory settings in the BIOS are used only within the BIOS; they are ignored by the DCH runtime drivers, which will dynamically allocate and deallocate memory for use as VRAM as required by the currently running software.

I did, and it worked. Here's what I did.
The original problem prevented me from entering the BIOS setup by holding down the F2 key at boot, the system jumped right to the point where the video was scrambled. To get around this I removed the security jumper from the motherboard and rebooted without a USB drive present. This got me to the recovery prompt and from there I was able to use the F2 key to get into the BIOS setup. I reset the BIOS to its defaults by pressing the F9 key and then went to the video configuration. I reduced the IGD Minimum Memory size to 32Mb (from 64Mb) and the IGD Aperture Size to 128Mb (from 256Mb).
I then saved the BIOS configuration, replaced the security jumper and rebooted. When the system came up the video was back to normal.
Now if I could just get Ubuntu Linux to work with the onboard I-219V chipset I'd be set.

Hello Jamie_Jamison,

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.

It is good to hear that the community suggestions worked to fix the HDMI video.

Regarding Linux Ubuntu not working, for the Intel® Ethernet Connection I219-V, you can find some downloads available for Linux:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/82186/Intel-Ethernet-Connection-I219-V

However, Intel does not test and validate Intel® NUCs on Linux, we have reports from other NUC owners about the compatibility of the following Linux version:

https://compatibleproducts.intel.com/ProductDetails/ExportPeripheralInfo?moduleName=Intel%C2%AE%20NUC&productType=Kits&productName=NUC8i5BEH

We suggest you check your Linux distro's website and forums at  https://ubuntu.com/community for peer assistance with this installation issue.
