Bluetooth keyboard slow to activate

AZguy

Ever since I installed Windows 10 2004 bluetooth has become a major problem.

At first, I could not connect two bluetooth devices:  My mouse and my keyboard.

After installing Microsoft KB4568831 and updating to the latest Intel drivers that problem disappeared.

  • Bluetooth Driver:  21.110.0
  • Wifi Driver:  21.90.3
  • Video Driver:  27.20.100.8476

 Unfortunately,

A New Unexpected Issue appeared:

It now takes about 20 to 30 key presses before the keyboard will wake up after booting.  It also periodically stops responding for periods of about 30 seconds.

I am not allowing Windows 10 to put bluetooth devices to sleep in the device manager.  Any other settings I need to be aware of?

Thank you.

 Hello AZguy,

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.

To better assist you please provide the following information:

  • Was the unit working fine prior to the operating system update?
  • How did you update the drivers? Did you use the Intel® Driver & Support Assistant?
  • Please provide the model of your NUC.
  • Have you tried your mouse and keyboard in another device? If so, they work fine?

In order to take a look at the drivers and system information please run the following tool and attach the reports generated:

Hello AZguy,

Thank you for your response.

  • What is version of the driver previously installed?
  •  Can you please check what the current power plan on Windows is*?
  • Is the NUC working fine with any other Bluetooth devices?
  • Do the mouse and keyboard need any software/firmware to work properly? If so, Is it up to date?

I noticed that currently, you are working with the generic drivers for the wireless adapter. However, you may want to install the following drivers that are fully validated for your NUC model.

I have this problem as well, it started immediately after upgrading to Windows 10 2004.  I've since done a fresh install of the same version of windows, no change in behavior.  This is on a NUC8i7BEH and it's happened with every version of Bluetooth driver I've tried.  By any chance are you using a Logitech MX Keys keyboard?  That's what I've got.  There's anywhere from a 10-30 second delay when I switch devices to my NUC and sometimes I have to switch devices multiple times and back to the NUC before it will start working.

MikeBurrito,

Yes the problem appeared after upgrading to Windows 10 2004.  I have tried two fresh installs after erasing my Nuc's ssd and have the same results.  None of the Intel Bluetooth drivers fix the issue.

I have obtained drivers from the Intel Driver and Support Assistant and I have also tried drivers from https://downloadcenter.intel.com/

Unfortunately, the problem still exists.

One interesting note:

After I wiped my system and installed a fresh copy of Windows 10 2004 the power plans changed.  With Windows 10 2004 the only power plan available on my Nuc8i7beh is balanced.  (see below)

Hello AZguy,

Thank you for your response.

Were you able to check my previous post?

Please let us know the outcome of testing the drivers that are validated for the NUC, not the wireless adapter.

We will be waiting for your response to check the results.

Hello AZguy,

Thank you so much for the update.

As we already tried the latest drivers for the wireless adapter and NUC model. The behavior that you are experiencing may be related to the power plan settings in your OS.

As this behavior occurred after upgrading to Windows* 10 2004 version I would recommend checking with them to cover all the Power Plan settings that we could change and may be causing this issue.

If the NUC is able to connect to any other Bluetooth device and establish a stable connection, we need to take some more things into consideration.

Hello AZguy,

Thank you so much for your patience.

After checking the information provided and the cause of this behavior, I would like to provide an update on this matter.

If the Intel® NUC Kit NUC8i7BEH is able to establish a stable connection to any other Bluetooth device we can determine that the Wireless Adapter and Bluetooth drivers are working as expected.

As this problem occurred after the upgrade of the operating system, my recommendation would be to check with Microsoft* support for additional troubleshooting in terms of operating system. I would recommend checking for any Power Setting or Power Plan that may be triggering this behavior.

Additionally, you could also contact the manufacturer of your Bluetooth keyboard/mouse for any future firmware/software that may improve the device functionality.

As a last troubleshooting step, I would recommend to follow the steps provided in our article Bluetooth Not Working on Intel® NUC

If you have any update after that please let us know.

The only power plan that Windows 10 makes available is balanced

I have wiped my system twice to confirm that fresh installs of Windows 10 by the Media Creation Tool only give me one power plan option.

The firmware and drivers for my Dell KM717 keyboard mouse are up to date.

The problem appeared after Windows 10 2004.

Hello AZguy,

Thanks for your response.

As this problem occurred after the upgrade of the operating system, my recommendation would be to check with Microsoft* support for additional troubleshooting or reported issues on their side.

As all other options were covered, I consider that checking with them would be great.

I'm seeing the exact same issue with a totally different keyboard (Logitech MX Keys), I have also done a clean install of Windows 2004 and have the same results.  Have tried all of the various bluetooth driver versions, even uninstalled all drivers and re-installed fresh and still see it.  The commonality here is the NUC, not the keyboard.  Doesn't Intel even attempt to duplicate these issues in a lab environment?

If I unpair my keyboard, it takes 15-20 attempts to get it paired again, something is very wrong with Win 2004 + the NUC

MikeBurrito is correct!

The problem does not occur on a Dell system for example.  It occurs on Intel Nuc's after the Windows 10 update 2004 is installed.  Whether the install was an upgrade or a fresh install the same issue exists.

I have several clients with Intel Nuc's they are all having the same exact issues.  The commonalities are Intel Nuc and Windows 10 update 2004.  That is where the commonalities end.

For some reason Microsoft only offers the "balanced" power profile on Intel Nuc's.  This was not previously the case.  In the past, you had several power profiles to choose from with extensive settings inside of each profile.

Any insights as to why only one power profile is available?

Thank you.

Any updates on this issue?

Getting tired of pressing a key on the keyboard 20 times after booting up to activate my keyboard.

I rebuilt my computer again in an attempt to fix this issue.  This time I set the bios to legacy sleep so I could choose "High Performance" rather than balanced.

Unfortunately, the issue still exists.

I have the same problem. No need to push buttons it seems I just have to patiently wait for the NUC to connect to my Logitech MX keyboard. Both my Mac laptop and iMac connect much faster.

Still happening for me also, on the latest Intel driver 21.110.0.3 and the latest Windows 10 build 19041.508.  Logitech MX Keys keyboard.  Oddly my bluetooth mouse does not have the same problems, it is only the keyboard that is delayed when connecting.

"Oddly my bluetooth mouse does not have the same problems, it is only the keyboard that is delayed when connecting."

Exactly the same here!

Only the keyboard is delayed in connecting.

Last night I removed all Bluetooth connections.  I normally connect the mouse first and then the keyboard.  Since the mouse works normally, I decided to connect the keyboard first to see if the order of connection made a difference.

The order of connection does not make a difference.  The keyboard is still very slow to connect.

Hi AZguy et all,

This issue is supposedly addressed by Microsoft* on KB4568831 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4568831/windows-10-update-kb4568831 as mentioned already by AZguy (thanks for that), take note that this may not affect other systems running Windows 10 2004, it is hardware dependable based on the issue description also provided by Microsoft*  here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-information/resolved-issues-windows-10-2004#381msgdesc

Help needed:

Can anyone experiencing this issue provide me with SSU log file https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility-for-Windows- ? Make sure that you are already running the latest BIOS and drivers and KB4568831. Also, please provide me with the Brand and Model for bluetooth devices.

Thanks,

Ronny G
