Can Ubuntu be installed on Hades Canyon NUC NUC8i7HVK/NUC8i7HNK?

It seems that Ubuntu hasn't been certified to install on it. That means one had better not do it, right?

By the way, is it possible to find any step-by-step guides on how to install Windows 10 (or Ubuntu 16.04lts) on NUC or Hades Canyon?

I was able to get Ubuntu 18.04 to work with a NUC8i7HNK1. I believe I may have had to disable the integrated graphics card in the BIOS while I was trying to make it work---but I'm not sure if that step was necessary.

I've found two issues so far:

1. Resuming from suspend results in garbled graphics and an unresponsive machine. This is also mentioned in the reddit post lw1948 linked to.
2. I can't get TOSLINK/optical audio from the rear connector to work. Ubuntu simply doesn't seem to recognize that it exists. I don't know if it works on Windows or not.

Otherwise, I had good luck with wired Ethernet, HDMI video out, and audio out via the rear headphones jack.

I hope the suspend/resume issue gets sorted out soon.

The suspend issue I mentioned (where the machine has garbled graphics which requires a hard reboot after resuming from suspend) is fixed for me when using the Linux kernel 4.19-rc1 from Ubuntu. I haven't gotten my thunderbolt device working. It's a KVM type switch that uses older TB so I've decided to just plug monitor directly into NUC (a TB to HDMI adapter and it works fine). I'll revisit later once I get 4.18 kernel on device.

After installing Ubuntu and upgrading to an 4.18 RC kernel, mesa 18.1 and Vega M firmware, it works great.

I had issues with HDMI when connected to a receiver, fix has been made but hasn't made it to kernel 4.18 yet.

Also I had to set pulseaudio tsched=0 to get rid of scratching for HDMI audio.

Has anyone been able to get Thunderbolt working?

I have Ubuntu 18.04 installed but have not gotten the graphics to work yet. I tried installed from AMD site but caused issues so I'll defer.

Hoping to use my thunderbolt KVM type switch for monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc but Ubuntu doesn't appear to recognize any devices? Not sure if it's even supported?

Yes is actually almost no problem.

The secret is simply that after installing Ubuntu 18.04 you must not install any updates until you have a kernel 4.18 installed.

New drivers are needed for the new AMD graphics card and will only work with kernel 4.18....

The same with Debian....

Installation no problem, then install Kernel 4.18 or newer Kernel 4.19rc1 and then when booting is okay with new kernel update the system....

The problem is the new driver from mesa needs some stuff from kernel 4.18, so if you update a system without kernel-update before,

the linux is still hold on by booting with a Xorg fatal error

By all Debain based is it the same..

so i have test it over 3 month with defrents Linux-Systems:

Kernel 4.17 mit X.Org 1.19 = Booting Okay in VESA-modus

Kernel 4.17 mit X.Org 1.20 = Booting Faileds

Kernel 4.18 mit X.Org 1.20 = Booting Okay with new driver

I use Manjaro Linux myself

tested with Ubuntu 18.04.3, Hades NUC is natively supported, no need to install patches anymore.

Same for Ubuntu 19.04.

But for LG 5K display, I can't figure out a way to configure 5K resolution as there are 2 DP displays in system settings.

Tips:

intel graphics must be disabled in BIOS, otherwise you can't boot into Ubuntu with only LG 5K display which has only ThunderBolt 3 interface.

I see this is an old thread but I wanted to update: the latest ubuntu desktop 20.04.2 LTS works on my nuc8i7hvk without any modifications.  I am using it right now to listen to music and I still have the iGD as well as secure boot enabled.  Works and boots just fine.  I am doing a dual boot with windows.

also: using hdmi out to my tv.
