Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.

To better assist you I would appreciate if you could provide the following information:

  • Is the Operating system installed in the second drive?
  • What is your BIOS version?

Please provide a picture of the Boot Order in BIOS.

1. Press F2 during boot to enter BIOS Setup.

2. Go to Advanced > Boot > Boot Priority (or Boot > Boot Priority).

Also, please check if BIOS detects the driver

1.Press F2 during boot to enter BIOS Setup.

2.Go to Advanced > Devices > SATA (or Advanced > Storage).

3.See if the drive is detected and identified on the SATA Port or the M.2 Port.

 Hello francois3,

Thank you so much for your response.

After reviewing your report we can see that your system is up to date in terms of BIOS/firmware.

  • Do you recall if this behavior occurred after an update? For example a BIOS update?

  • As per SSU we can see that your drive part number is “CT250MX500SSD4” What is the model of the second storage device?

  • Were you able to follow the steps previously provided? Is there any error during the startup process?

  • Did you check the Boot Order and Advanced > Devices > SATA (or Advanced > Storage)?

I will be waiting for your response.

Hello,

I see that in BIOS UEFI:

PCI configuration M.2 Slot (CT 250 etc...)

                             chipset  sata  +

                             sata port         +

                             sata port not installed

                              M2 sata CT 250 etc....

Maybe the port for second disk is not installed ?

For update bios:    no files in choose a bio file  at   fs0:\      EFI\

                                                                                                                 Ubuntu\              no file

                                                                                                                 Boot\                   no file

I think I didn’t upgrade the bios. (it's better !!!).

Thank you for help

Hello francois3,

Thank you so much for your response.

I would like to share with you’re the following article. I consider that it provides really helpful recommendations for this kind of behavior.

On my side I would like to emphasize some of them:

As you may know, if your main goal is to boot from the second drive you need to ensure that an Operating system is on the drive.

Additionally, I would strongly recommend to check the drive connection. In this case please ensure that the cable is properly connected.

  • When you state that the both devices are detected by the software, do you mean that they are detected in the Operating System?
  • Have you tried a different drive to see if this behavior persists?

Thank you for your help.

I read your article. I do not agree that the disk is defective. I used it very little on another device. It's very strange that software recognize this disk and the bios no.

I fear to make a mistake by updating the bios. So i got a hit ; i created a boot partition with Garted (UEHI and mounted as boot UEFI (with flags) ;  and a second partition ext4 and mounted as "/" root.

Now the bios recognize the secund disk but ......does not offer it to boot on !!!!

I have  problem with an external CD drive: i can't boot and is not even reconized.

Some of the intel drivers etc...has not been installed despite i use the intel update software.

I downloaded all the pilots . I see what it does.

Thank you for help.

I put the post as resolved
