I just bought the DN2820FYKH computer to act as a home server. I installed Slackware without much problems, except with EFI boot - these were fixed by updating bios.
However, the computer does not boot without a HDMI display attached. I do not want to buy any new hardware.

Thanks for joining the NUC community.
Please bear in mind there are some NUC models that cannot boot without connecting a monitor, this is called headless remote unit. Please take a look at this URL for more information: http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/CS-034652.htm Intel® NUC Boards and Kits — Remote access to Intel NUCs

Sorry to bother in this thread too.
You write about some NUC models that can't boot without monitor connected, and then you point to a document that is about VNC, remote desktop and Intel drivers.
I don't use Windows, and the link doesn't state anything regarding boot issues, only post-boot remote access, so there is no "remote client software" involved.
Could you please explain?
Thanks.

Hi,
There are a number of online resources that talk about how to get Linux to boot without a monitor. You may be able to find your answer here -

Hi, thank you for the insight! Your links will strengthen my resolve in staying away from Ubuntu . However, with Slackware, my NUC doesn't even start X at boot. I think the problem happens even before the Linux kernel starts.

I think the DN2820FYKH might be one of the models that just can't boot without a monitor connected, even though the VNC document doesn't list it as one. I want to use ssh shell access to the NUC, which works beautifully as long as there's a display attached at boot time, but not without. I will have to try plugging a HDMI-DVI adapter as suggested. For now, I can't recommend buying a NUC for home server purposes, which is a pity as the form factor and small power requirements fit the purpose nicely.

Hi,
I know that the DN2820FYKH can boot without a monitor... at least if Windows is the OS. I tested that and it works.
As far as I can tell, yours is the first report to us of a NUC with Slackware installed. I was hoping that the clues with Ubuntu would help you. Perhaps there are other users here who can chime in!

Hi,
It's not just a problem that one person or one machine is facing. We have 4 NUCs that are all experiencing the same problem intermittently. Sometimes they'll boot without a monitor and sometimes they won't. It's totally random for us and very frustrating as we'll boot them remotely sometimes and then they don't come back up without connecting a monitor.
Also, as mentioned above, it doesn't even get to the stage of loading the operating system, so it looks to be independent of the OS. We're running Ubuntu on ours.
Regards.

I have now tested my NUC again a couple of times. If I try to boot it without a display attached, nothing at all gets written in the logs. The booting should be done by elilo, and the linux kernel is passed "vga=normal" as a parameter. For me it's not random: it seems to never boot, unless connected to a display that's turned on.
I bought a HDMI-DVI adapter that plugs in to the NUC. It doesn't help. Likewise, I noticed that plugging a HDMI cable to a projector that's turned on, but using another input, does not help. At least the NUC is very stable and doesn't need to be restarted often..

Hi,
By updating to BIOS 47, dated 24.12.2014, headless boot works well for me!
You can download BIOS 47 here, https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=24579&lang=eng&ProdId=3782 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=24579&lang=eng&ProdId=3782

Just came across this thread and I'd post after searching for a solution so people knows. You can purchase a terminator to fool the computer into thinking there's a monitor connected via HDMI. Just search for CompuLab fit-Headless ... (I'm not affiliated with them). There must be other solution available in the market place.
