Intel NUC 11 Enthusiast SD Card slot problems

Gotta Intel NUC 11 Enthusiast - RNUC11PHKi7C001. After a fresh reboot, the SD Card slot works fine. But if I remove the card in it then re-insert it, it doesn't work. Card is a Sandisk 128GB microsd in a SD Card adapter. Also tested with a Samsung 32GB SD card. From recollection in the past, with a Samsung SD 512GB microsd card w/ adapter - it worked then once removed it worked again, but upon inserting a different SD card, that could not be read. But not able to duplicate that at the moment. So..obviously the hardware works, but there is something screwy with the driver. Any ideas / suggestions. I have the latest drivers.

Hello earthcomedy,

Thank you for posting on the Intel️® communities. We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing issues with the SD card reader with your Intel NUC 11 Enthusiast.

Regarding this issue you should try the following recommendations:

  • Update BIOS to the latest version, at the time, the latest version available is the 0071. Please, refer to the following article to get the proper BIOS installation steps.
  • Download and install the latest Card Reader driver for your Intel NUC, the driver for your unit is 10.0.19041.21335.
  • Check for any physical damage on the card reader slot.

In case the issue persists,

, create a report using the Intel System Support Utility (Intel SSU). This report will gather information from your system that will help us troubleshoot your issue.

  • Download the Intel SSU
  • Open the application and click "Scan" to see the system and device information. By default, Intel SSU will take you to the "Summary View."
  • Click on the menu where it says: "Summary" to change it to "Detailed View."
  • To save your scan: click "Next"; then "Save

Yes, using BIOS 0071.

This is my Card Reader Driver. It is a later version then what you have noted. Should I downgrade then?

Installed the SSU report and have attached it to this message..

Tried to install the lower version and it won't allow it.

Went to device mgr and tried to uninstall card reader,  rebooted...but it's still there.

Any ideas?

Hello earthcomedy

Thanks for the information you shared.

We understand your question if you should downgrade this driver. We recommend you test if the issue is still present on the 10.0.19041.21335. This step would help us determine whether or not the problem is related to this specific driver.

Ok thanks.

Just FYI, I asked about this on Reddit NUC forum and at least a couple of other people have the same issue.

Another test data point. Doing it right now. Typing as I test.

I restarted NUC 11 with NO SD CARD installed - using system for < day after reboot.

I just inserted a Samsung PRO 32GB full SD Card (not microsd) and it identified fine. Ejected, and reinserted - works fine.

- Inserted Full 512MB (not GB) Sandisk older card - recognizes fine. Eject.

- Insert Samsung 32GB again - works ok. Eject.

- Insert Sandisk 1GC microSD in Sandisk adapter - works. Eject.

- Insert Samsung 32GB again - works ok. Eject.

- Insert Sandisk Extreme 128GB microsd in adapter - works ok. Eject.

- Insert Samsung 32GB again - works ok. Eject.

- Insert Sandisk Extreme 128GB microsd in adapter - works ok. Eject.

...ok so it seems to be working fine at the moment.   But I'd expect it to stop functioning at some point...when I can't tell you.

So...def...some kind of software conflict/issue...I really do not know.   I will use PC normally and try and test tomorrow.

I should add...I did do the install of the older driver after uninstalling the existing one, "didn't appear to do anything." By right clicking and installing.

Maybe somehow the DEVICE MANAGER didn't update properly even though the driver is now older?

Where can I find the files / install directory of the RealTek card drivers?

Ok. I did a search for RTSPER.SYS

Found 4 instances. 1 is where I put the unzipped files.

1 instance

\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\resper.inf_amd64_a bunch of letters/numbers

When I looked at the properties of this file - it is the older version that you recommended I install.  Has a modification date of TODAY Jan 19th.

2nd instance

\Windows\System32\drivers -- this is the newest version <----- presumably this is the active version that is reported in DEVICE manager. 10.0.19042.21347

3rd instance

\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\resper.inf_amd64_a bunch of letters/numbers

looks to be same version as 2nd instance.

Hello earthcomedy,

Thanks for the information and patience.

This time, try to install Realtek* SD Card Reader Driver for Intel® NUC11PH following these steps:

Let me know if you have any error messages, and if so, please, take a screenshot of the error message you receive.

Also, I would like to know if the issue has been reproduced after you restarted NUC 11 with NO SD CARD installed.

well it's still working thus far.  Tried a 512GB Samsung Microsd...copied files...then ejected and reinserted different one.

still works.

The uninstall and reinstall of the older driver seems to have done the trick.

Though again DEVICE MANAGER still shows the driver is the original one I had.

Attached image of that.

So, I'm not sure what changed?

We can consider this resolved for now I guess....

Hello earthcomedy,

Thanks for the information provided.

I am glad to hear that the issue seems to be solved. However, I would like to wait a few days to confirm whether or not the problem persists. Let me know if you have any issues.

Also, regarding the Driver version, I want to ask if when you tried to install the driver while you were connected to the internet. If so, remember that sometimes Windows automatically may install driver updates, so to discard this possibility, try installing the driver without an internet connection.

well..right clicking install on a driver file doesn't have anything to do with whether one is connected to the internet...

for the sake of argument, I did it again while unplugged, and there's no difference in the windows/system32/drivers/rtsper

it's still the later version...but things are still working at the moment, that's all I can say.  I did do a large copy operation and it seemed to have worked ok...that's the extent of my testing.

if the problem returns, I will come here again.

Hello earthcomedy,

Regarding the Driver installation process, it seems that it could not be installed properly.

However, I am glad to hear that everything is working fine.
