Intel NUC 8i3BEK1 and Canon MP490 printer driver problem. NUC USB port issue?

I've had a Canon MP490 inkjet printer hooked up to a 2014 HP Envy Laptop  for many years without any problems.

Recently that HP laptop failed and I now want to get the printer to work with a NUC 8i3BEK1.

When I try to install the Canon printer drivers it DOES NOT work because the the printer IS NOT detected.

Avast / system does detect the printer's memory card reader though - which I never use.

So...has anyone had this problem before? WIth any other printer?

The printer does work, I tested it with another newer 2020 HP Laptop just now and no problems.

So, something about the NUC's USB port(s). I've run the Intel driver/support software and all drivers / bios have been updated to the latest.

Running Windows 10 Home.

Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-8109U CPU @ 3.00GHz 3.00 GHz w/ 8GB and a Kingston 512 GB SSD.

I've re-checked those two BIO settings to ON, and the printer seems to work!

So...it was just an issue with the driver installation!

Yay...can return that HP at Costco w/o opening it.

Well..maybe somebody will have the same issue and read this.

Of course..another test will be when the monitor goes to sleep mode will that affect the printer some how?  I doubt it..but can't know until it happens. I'll type a response if there is an issue, otherwise, case closed!

Hello earthcomedy,

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities. I am sorry to know that you are having issues with your Intel® NUC Kit NUC8i3BEK.

In order to better assist you, please provide the following:

1. What is the BIOS version installed?

2. Do other printers work with the Intel® NUC Kit NUC8i3BEK?

3. Have you performed any changes to the BIOS?

4. Do you get any errors at the device manager when you connect the printer? If so, can you take a picture?

Might it be some USB related thing in the BIOS setting? I did change some setting  to address monitor wake/sleep functions.

1. BIOS - BECFL 357.86A.0089.2021.0621.1343

2. Have not tested any other printers. Though I have ordered a newer HP 6455e Inkjet printer from Costco yesterday. Though I don't really want it as the Canon works fine.

3. Yes, I did modify a setting. Let me see if I can remember what it was.

...ok I checked the BIOS. Here are some relevant USB settings..not sure if any of these were what I modified.

Devices - USB:

USB Legacy - checked

Charging in S3 - checked

USB ports - All Enabled

Power - Secondary Power

Sleep Type - Legacy S3 standby - checked

USB S4 / S5 power - checked

Wake on USB S5 - checked

Those are the only ones I noticed.

4. No errors...when plugging in the printer. It's just not detected.  I use an external keyboard and mouse and they both work fine on the USB ports.

Tried the VIsual BIOS screen capture, but not sure where it saves the image to.

1. "...Avast / system does detect the printer's memory card reader though - which I never use. ..." You mean that the memory card installed in your printer, you can see in Windows? If I understand correctly your sentence, it means that USB works and your printer is recognized in Windows.

2. Are you trying to install correct driver for Windows 10?

that's the driver!

Windows 10 64-bit.

memory card reader...I can't say if I see it in windows, I didn't check. I just know Avast warning came up.

Ok, I inserted an SD card in the printer reader - it reads ok.

In Windows - PRINTERS and SCANNERS it does show MP490 series, but it says DRIVER UNAVAILABLE.

That's the screen it gets stuck on.

Ok...have a 2nd NUC here and the driver and printer work fine!

The good NUC is 6i3SYK. Win 10 Pro 64-bit.  Win 10 build is similar, but not exact.

Bad - 19044.1586

Good - 19043.1766 (Slightly older build)

I'm installing some windows updates on the "bad NUC" right now, see if that will address the issue. Then I'll compare BIOS settings.

Problem solved! It was two (Maybe 1) BIO settings I  UNCHECKED on the bad NUC.

USB S4/S5 power

and

Wake on USB S5

Re-ran installation and it immediately recognized.

unchecking those may affect the monitor sleep/wake - as I recall I had issues with that prior and I know it was a recognized NUC issue (On some models).

won't know that answer until later. I wonder if I can re-check them on and the printer will still work now that the driver is installed...will test.
