Hi All,
I have an intel NUC 8i7BEH. It was working perfectly fine until recently, when it started to show a warning message on critical error with CMOS battery. However, it was booting and as soon as it booted to windows, it showed the date and time by when it was last shut down. After few minutes, the date and time got corrected automatically.
In order to fix this issue, I went to an Intel authorized center where they validate whether defective intel products are covered under warranty and do the needful for free service/replacement of defective products, if they are covered under warranty. I checked with the person who does the warranty check and requested him if he can replace my CMOS battery. He said my NUC was not covered under warranty, but CMOS battery can easily be replaced. He dismantled the mother board from box and stripped off the CMOS battery which was stuck to a metal plate below the CPU cooling fan. While he pulled the battery, the small metal plate to which it was attached also got pulled out from the mother board.
He placed small plate back and attached the CMOS battery to it using a sticking tape. Now the NUC is not booting at all. He reinstalled the old battery and tried again but still it is not booting. He says that the metal plate on which the CMOS battery was attached was nothing but a provision for mounting the CMOS battery and even it was plucked out it would have no effect on booting.
Can someone give any idea on what that plate was and is there any way I can boot my NUC. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!!

Subramani, Thank you for posting in the Intel® Communities Support.
Normally, when it comes to boot issues on an Intel® NUC, we recommend to follow the troubleshooting steps provided in the link below:
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005845/intel-nuc.html
Still, we will do further research on this matter, since "the small metal plate to which it was attached also got pulled out" as soon as I get any updates, I will post all the details on this thread.
Any questions, please let me know.
Regards,
Albert R.

Hello Subramani, You are very welcome, I just received an update on this matter.
After reviewing the case, we just wanted to let you know that the proper part number for the battery that is fully compatible with your Intel® NUC is CR2032. Please make sure that you are using the correct battery type on the unit.

Hi @Subramani
1. Did you checked if your NUC boots with CMOS battery disconnected? You can check this while the board is removed from the case.
2. Some time the ne battery have inverted polarity (for example if it is prepared for DELL computer). Check the polarity on the connector (the polarity should be as on the attached image).

Many thanks Leons for your response. Following are my observations:
1) If the polarity is changed or if the CMOS battery is removed, the unit is not getting powered on, the power switch's LED is also not getting on.
2) When I removed the board and tried to power on the unit, without removing the CMOS battery and with correct polarity, the power button's LED is getting switched on. The keyboard responds to capslock and numlock keys. The respective LEDs on keyboard toggles to on and off while pressing the CAPS and Num lock keys. After some time even the capslock and numlock keys are not working and the capslock and numlock LEDs are getting switched off.
3) As there is no display, I am not sure if the system responds to F2 key and enters into visual BIOS.

1. I'm not sure what was the configuration, while you performed the test with the board removed and the old battery connected:
1.1. was RAM installed (if yes, both modules)?
1.2 was the System SSD installed?
1.3 was the monitor connected?
2. Could be that the old battery is discharged. Can you check the battery voltage? Can you install a new battery?
3. If you unscrew the screws holding the cooling blower and disconnect the blower cable, you can detach the blower and check if there is now some damage in the battery cable isolation. In the same time, after blower is removed, using a compressed air, you may clean the cooling solution and the blower

I am on an official trip and would be back to my hometown once my work is done. I'd check the details once Iam back to my hometown and would respond. Many thanks for all your help and support. I really appreciate it.
If possible could you please let me know what is the metal plate which should be available right below the battery. The bottom of the battery is stuck to the top of the plate.
The person who attempted to replace the CMOS battery, pulled it and the metal plate to which the battery was attached to also got stripped off. If at all there is a damage, I belive that it was the metal plate which got stripped off from the motherboard.

"...If possible could you please let me know what is the metal plate which should be available right below the battery." I don't know what was the metal plate for.
