Intel NUC D54250WYKH won't power on

Dear all,

I was running my Intel NUC D54250WYKH (BIOS 0028), with Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS without any problems until yesterday when I tried to but the system into suspend. The system then froze and I had to turn it off manually using the power button on the NUC. Now I cannot power the unit back on. I press the power button with no success. I can see the LAN led flicker. Any idea on how to fix this issue.

Thank you.

Hello DamienF, Thanks for joining the NUC community.

There is some information I would like to know in order to assist you.

Was there any change on the NUC configuration? Any program or update installed?

Is there a possibility to test another AC adapter?

Try different cables and power source.

Reseating the RAM, moving the SSD and clearing the CMOS by taking the battery and a BIOS recovery are excellent steps so if you do the steps mentioned above and issue persist, It may be necessary to replace the unit.

Also, please check some tips about this http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/CS-034211.htm Intel® NUC — Troubleshooting No Boot Issues

In case you need the warranty option, this is the contact information from our Warranty department http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/contactsupport http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/contactsupport or submit a or submit a web ticket at the following URL https://servicerequestmgmt.intel.com/webticketui/emailpage.aspx?lang=en-us https://servicerequestmgmt.intel.com/webticketui/emailpage.aspx?lang=en-us

Thanks Silvia,

Was there any change on the NUC configuration? No change

Any program or update installed? I had installed the latest updates from Ubuntu

Is there a possibility to test another AC adapter? I did not have one available

Try different cables and power source. I did not have one available

I have returned the unit and I hope my replacement will not have the same issue. I will keep you updated.

Cheers

Hi Sylvia,

I think these Ubuntu/Linux booting problems are all one and the same, going into suspend/hibernate will make the NUC unbootable (rather often). This is quite likely related to some BIOS problem. Although I know Linux might not be a officially supported OS for the NUC, I think the community would be grateful for any effort you could put into finding a solution for this problem.

Tomas, I really understand your point.

I would like to tell you that we have a D34010WYK running Ubunto 14.04 for a while and we are not experiencing this or any other behavior.

Bear in mind that the D54250WYK and the D34010WYK are very alike. The NUC is running BIOS version 021 just in case.

Is some engineering team looking into this issue or what is happening at Intel when a number of NUC gets bricked because you put it into sleep from Ubuntu?

I have (luckily) not experienced a bricked NUC myself (yet) but reading more than one thread about this issue in here (and other places) makes one wonder if I should continue to run my NUC or look for alternatives?

I can understand there might be "bugs" where sleep mode for one reason or another wont work, or one need to have a specific set of bios settings enabled etc but getting a bricked NUC (that REFUSE to power on) no matter if you remove the PSU or not or even remove the bios battery just doesnt sound right to me.

I have previously (during my 25 years or so playi... erhm... working with computers ;-) experienced both workstations and servers who have completely locked up. But they have ALWAYS been able to reboot once you unplug the box from the power outlet (and then of course reconnect it to the power outlet) - that is without having to fiddle with the bios battery or other black magic.

Hi Sylvia, I can give my setup specifications if it in any way might help.

Complete lock up after putting device to sleep using the power button. Device stays in sleep mode, blinking once every second(?), does not respond to button presses and screen is complely black. After removing and reconnecting power, does not respond to any power button key presses anymore. Dim green light only visible sign of operation and, connecting ethernet cable still turns port lights on.

Only way to get it back working seems to be removing the CMOS battery for a while.

Hi Sylvia,

I have now had exactly the same problem twice with two different NUC 54250 - after suspend they just sit there flashing the blue light every 5 seconds and will not reboot either with a remote or by pressing the button. After powering off the box, it is not possible to reboot - no light, no fan, no sign of life at all. No option but to return it to the supplier.

This has now happened to me twice and I am currently waiting for the arrival of my third NUC from the supplier!!!

Like the other folk with this problem, I am running Ubuntu 14.10 under EFI and the most recent box was updated to BIOS 032.

This looks to me like a serious BIOS problem and could result in yet more returns unless there is a solution soon.

Any advice Sylvia?

namirda, did you try to remove the CMOS battery for a short while? It's on the other side of the motherboard so you have to remove it to access the battery. That will get your NUC back up and running without replacement.

tjm - Thanks for the reply. No I did not try to remove the battery. I believe the battery is underneath the board and I thought that removing the board might invalidate the warranty. With the problems we all have been having, I think I might continue to need this warranty!

Thanks for the youtube link - if I get really frustrated then I might just give it a try.

Would be really great to hear from Intel when this critical error is about to get resolved?

Along with a workaround on how to "unbrick" your NUC since removing power obviously doesnt work (where it should).

Hello Guys, I would like to share with you the results from my lab.

This is my system configuration:

  • D54250WYKH NUC
  • Ubuntu 14.04
  • Bios version 033

Please check the picture below for the secondary power setting on BIOS

I was able to boot to Ubuntu and then use the suspend mode. The NUC came back without problems.

Hello guys,

We are still investigating on this issue but we haven't had any luck in duplicating this behavior.

Did someone try the settings provided by Sylvia_intel and had any different result?

Thanks,

Can you tell us how to get the NUC to switch on in order to check these settings?
