I believe this happens because the EC is being rebooted. It's not nice - and it's not the only NUC that has this issue.

EC stands for Embedded Controller. The EC is responsible for the management and control of the cooling subsystem (the blower attached to the processor), the LEDs, Consumer I/R (remote controller) and a number of other minor subsystems.

When you say you don't see the same behaviour after Windows has booted, what specifically do you mean?

thanks Scott for the explanation, so i guess we have to live with it or Intel could fix it? its maybe once a week and i power on my NUC each day.

I tried it for 20 minutes with an cpu stress test and there is no noticeable noise, wow. i experienced only one short spin up for 2 seconds. could this be avoid with different values?

I dont understand why the factory default profiles are so bad and i now understand why a lot of Consumers are complainh about a noisy NUC.

Most Consumers will not play in the BIOS, just want an out of the box perfect System.

Intel could have a much better positive NUC standing if the fan noise with your settings is saved in a default profile.

Yea, their Cool/Balanced/Quiet settings are almost useless; far too close together and none implementing a reasonable response curve. Some of the NUC models seem to have a problem where the BIOS parameters are not always getting delivered to the EC. It appears that these NUCs are not resetting all of the parameters that make up the fan speed control configuration when defaults are loaded. Bottom line, I manually set *all* parameters and implement good control over the response curve.

What is likely happening to you is that the processor was hot enough that, when the configuration was delivered to the EC by the BIOS, this caused it to jump up to the needed response level immediately, making the recovery noticeable. If I am correct; this cannot be avoided. I made the suggestion to the development team (unpteen times!) that they implement a temperature smoothing algorithm in the EC (which would have fixed this issue as well as some of the other surges that can occur), but this has never been implemented.

sounds not really good for Intel in this case, Jesus.....

So it leads me to say they dont test any NUC a few minutes to test the cooling and its issues which could jappen, not good.

make sense your explanation and its ok due i dont use it for high CPU usage for long time.

BTW, I am chatting with someone from Intel support. Do you think it make sense to explain him the fan thing or should i create a new thread and hope someone will take care of it?

For me an improvement is really needed.

ffmpeg cpu load 30-40% and Temp above 80 Deg and blower at maximum

compressing an video file with 7zip and winrar (default settings) cpu load  70-90% and Temp between 60 and 70 Deg and fan is quite. default settings

now disabled turbo boost and the fan is quite, also after windows boot.

Any idea Scott how to improve with turbo boost?

I dont feel much slower with disabled turbo boost so far

Go into BIOS Setup (Visual BIOS) and try this custom fan speed control configuration:

• Fan Off disabled.
• Processor Temperature: 
  • Minimum Duty Cycle: 20%
  • Minimum Temperature: 65c
  • Duty Cycle Increment: 4%
• Motherboard Temperature:
  • Minimum Duty Cycle: 20%
  • Minimum Temperature: 55c
  • Duty Cycle Increment: 4%
