Intel NUC11PHKi7C Modern Standby Overheating in "Sleep" mode

There is a huge problem with SO Modern Standby with the NUC11PHKi7C. When the NUC goes to Standby, the logo and power button flash, but the computer gets hot - really hot. "Waking" the NUC with a mouse or keyboard starts the fans and the unit cools. Two different installations were tried to solve this problem.

  1. Win 10 21H2 x64 clean installation with all the latest drivers installed from the Intel Site. No apps.
  2. Win 10 21H2 x64 clean installation with the drivers installed from Windows Update. No apps.

Same problem. Computer goes to standby and overheats. The solution is to power off the machine when you leave it. This is not a solution.

Tried:

  • Disabling LAN/WLAN in group policy
  • Disabling LAN/WLAN wake up in driver settings
  • Changing the registry keys
  • Preventing WU from downloading system, driver files

No difference.

How can we disable S0 and go back to S3?

Hi @SkullTrail

Please read the discussion in Another NUC11PAHi7 with fan running during sleep mode. If the solution for NUC PA will work, it should work for you either.

Thanks for the reply, but the problem is the opposite. The unit overheats and the fans only kick in once you "wake" it. It's the "cooking" without cooling while in "Standby" that's the problem. Not sure what the point of the Modern Standby is exactly. If it is, which it is purported, to allow the computer to continue operating in the background, why not eliminate the middle man and let it run all day.

You asked: "How can we disable S0 and go back to S3?" So, in the reference thread you have description of the steps how to change the Sleep Mode to Legacy S3 Standby. I'm assuming that the current Sleep Mode in your NUC is Modern Standby.

If you didn't done this yet, please update BIOS to the latest version 0065:

- download PHTGL579.0065.EBU.exe file to your drive and double click on it.

- update will start (following your confirmation by clicking on "Y") and end automatically

I would also suggest to reset the BIOS to default settings (click F9 while in BIOS) and then check if the Cooling Fan works in Sleep.

Thanks. Installed 65 immediately out of the box before installing any os's. Default UEFI Bios settings makes no difference. Right now it's set to stay on. As noted earlier, all stock/default scenarios were tested with no changes.

Hello @SkullTrail

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.

We are checking this thread and we would like to know if you need further assistance. If the behavior persists, please provide us with the following details:

1- Is this a new device? When did you purchase the unit? Did it work fine before or is this behavior happening since the first day that you have the device?

2- If this worked fine before at any moment, were there any recent hardware or software changes that might relate to the point when the issue started? (For instance, Windows, BIOS, driver, or software updates?)

3- Run the Intel® System Support Utility (Intel® SSU) to gather more details about the system:

  • Download the Intel® SSU and save the application on your computer
  • Open the application, check the "Everything" checkbox, and click "Scan" to see the system and device information. The Intel® SSU defaults to the "Summary View" on the output screen following the scan. Click the menu where it says "Summary" to change to "Detailed View".
  • To save your scan, click Next and click Save.
  • Once you have saved the file (.txt file), please attach it to your reply.

To upload and attach a file, use the "Drag and drop here or browse files to attach" option below the response textbox.

Thanks for responding. As of now,  there were a couple BSODs that may be related to this issue.

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000113 (0x0000000000000019, 0x0000000000000001, 0x00000000000010de, 0x0000000000001f15).

After dissecting the memory dump, it points to the Intel Iris Xe Graphics adapter. It appears at this time that the RTX 2060 and Iris Xe adapters cannot coexist in modern standby.

The Iris Xe adapter was disabled and when the computer goes into modern standby, the computer is now warm and not boiling hot.

Will monitor the situation for now.
