Intel NUC11PHKi7C NUC Software Studio causes BSODs Event Viewer Corruption

Installed Win 10 Pro x64 21H2 with all the latest drivers from the Intel site EXCEPT the Intel NUC Software Studio. The problem is, as soon as Win 10 gets an internet connection, it automatically installs the Intel NUC Software Studio and the problems begin.

Notable problems:

  • Uninstalling Intel NUC Software Studio does NOT uninstall the app. In fact, it keeps running as a SERVICE.
  • Manually uninstalling it through command prompts, service removal, pnputil etc. does nothing. WU just reinstalls it even though registry changes to prevent driver and system software updates are invoked.
  • When Intel NUC Software Studio is installed, any time you plug a device into any of the TB4 ports, it BSODs with a kernel-power dump file. Stop the service by stopping and disabling it, the TB4 ports work.
  • When the Intel NUC Software Studio is running as a service, the already awful Modern Standby stops working and the NUC will not wake. Disable INSS, and it will wake, although, Modern Standby causes the computer to overheat in Standby Mode.
  • The Intel NUC Software Studio generates an "Event 3: IntelNucSoftwareStudioServiceLogSource  / An item with the same key has already been added" every 3 seconds thereby generating thousands and thousands of log entries!! The only solution is to disable the service, but WU keeps restarting it.
  • Manually installing Intel NUC Software Studio makes no difference. This is a truly terrible program / utility.

How can you permanently uninstall Intel NUC Software Studio and PREVENT Windows Update from reinstalling it?

Other points:

  • Bios 0065
  • Intel NUC Software Studio Version 1.44.22.2
  • Clean installation. All updates. No Apps installed, just the OS and drivers.

SkullTrail, Thank you for posting in the Intel® Communities Support.

In reference to your question, "How can you permanently uninstall Intel NUC Software Studio and PREVENT Windows Update from reinstalling it?", for us to provide the most accurate response, first, we just wanted to confirm a few details about your platform:

Is this a new Intel® NUC?

When did you purchase it?

Was the Intel® NUC working fine before after installing the Intel® NUC Software Studio?

By any chance, do you have the BSOD error code?

Did you make any recent hardware/software changes that might cause these problems?

Does the problem happen at home or in the work environment?

Please attach the SSU report so we can verify further details about the components in your platform, check all the options in the report including the one that says "3rd party software logs":

Any questions, please let me know.

The computer is brand new. As noted previously, the computer had a clean install with only the Intel drivers from the Intel website. No programs, apps of any kind were installed. Only the operating system. The problem is, the second after the clean installation with all the drivers and software from Intel, i.e. there are no yellow bangs the device manager in computer management, WU populates the drivers with its drivers downgrading some of the Intel drivers. And, more insidiously, installs the Intel NUC Software Studio which populates the Event logs with a "same key" error every 2 seconds resulting in hundreds of thousands of entries.

Also check to see if you can chance power plan settings. I suspect that one issue related to power states ties all of these problems together.

For the record I have not found a way to prevent the NUC Software Studio from automatically installing, it really should be optional.

I would be willing to bet that we are looking at an issue where the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. The people responsible for communicating with Microsoft about how to automatically interact with NUC11PHKi7C are not talking to support about what is being forced automatically through Windows updates. I also suspect that the NUC Software Studio being a forced install is directly related to why XTU is blacklisted on the NUC11PHKi7C since XTU and NUCSS would have conflicting features. Since you don't have a choice about NUCSS being installed, Intel has removed your choice about installing XTU all the while communicating none of this to support.

SkullTrail, Thank you very much for providing that information.

We will do further research on this matter, in order for us to be able to do that, please attach the SSU report so we can verify further details about the components in your platform, check all the options in the report including the one that says "3rd party software logs":
