Intel NUC12I7 Bugs and fan all over the place

Morning / Afternoon All

So i bought the NUC12 in the hope that the platform would be a stable and full functioning platform. Instead what i have noticed is that it got tons of child illness! I try to put things in context as some of them is hard to troubleshoot.

  • The fan goes off and cpu load goes high in a newly and patched windows 10. I.E not all the time but if start a small work I hear the fan go off. For example I am downloading via FTP and system fan is running high. This is brand top end CPU from 2022 ? a bit of ftp kicks of the fan?
  • Boot time!!!? I have noticed that the boot time is extremely long and it can sometime take 5 min for a reboot to occur. Just a min ago or so i tried to reboot, the screen went off and nothing happened. The power light was on, i disconnected the network cable in the hope that it was a process stuck but no, that was not the case. Eventually the NUC restarted.
  • BIOS and support for Samsung C49RG90xxx is just not there. Here are the steps:
    • Format the disk no OS installed
    • Connect Samsung to the screen with HDMI
    • The screen is black or monitor does not get signal.
  • Once windows is installed, and graphic drivers have been installed suddenly the bios do appear. (this was one of the most odd thing i have encountered in a long time).
  • However if i format the disk and reboot I don't get access to the boot screen.
  • Boot up time are horrendous slow. I would have expected it would start in zip, still it takes something like 30sec - 1 min.
  • Random app crash is another area, now I have a Zotac PC from 2015 and on that with an old windows 10 which is bloated i never had an issue with apps yet this brand new installed windows 10 app crash happens, and memory leaks in apps etc (I had opera suddenly take 40% of the memory). Point being i think there is a lot of bugs in still here to fix!

Summary

As i have grown older I have turned into this connivant person, I want technology to just work and I kinda expected this to just work. Yet it has been such a disappointment. I hope soon enough Intel does gets its act together and fix all of the above issues with software updates and new BIOS firmware. But still disappointed on the lack of detail during Q/A of this powerful device! I am running Windows 10 but it does not feel natural (Windows 11 is even worse as it feels like a Beta OS).

I am only one who has had these issues? Has there been others who had this as well ?

Hello Feejus,

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.

We would like to help you with this. Please provide the following information:

  • Provide make and model of RAM modules and drives used in the NUC.
  • By any chance, have you tested the RAM modules using a third-party software such as MemTest86?

Download the Intel® SSU https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility-for-Windows-

Open the application and select "Everything", click on "Scan" to see the system and device information. By default, Intel® SSU will take you to the "Summary View". Click on the menu where it says "Summary" to change to "Detailed View". To save your scan, click on "Next", then "Save". Please attach the file to your reply.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Steven,

Thank you for the suggestion. This is a brand new machine and i have no intention to troubleshoot tons. I would have expected that major bugs would have been addressed by now. Nevertheless, I can assure that the items are brand new so i doubt there is anything wrong with the Memory.

In terms of your question:

2 x Kingston 32 Gb Modules DDR4.

In terms of outcome out of the tool.

I have attached it here.

Hello Feejus,

So I can continue working on this, could you please confirm if the issue only happens with that display and also if a different drive was tested?

Hi @Steven_Intel

The display issue is very odd. In fact I am in process to get a brand new replacement for this issue. It seems there is some issue with the graphic.

In fact this  is what happens when i start the computer. Now even if i Switch output the computer is all over the place which output is primary and which is secondary.  Is this something you have seen before? Can you define on which screen the Bios should appear?

Would be keen to get a better understanding how this is suppose to work? Is this a oversight from Intel in term of multiple display support?

Also I had major issues on Sunday. It took me nearly 30 min to get the computer to boot up properly. Not sure if have the most corrupted computer hardware wise.

Other things i have experienced:

- Mouse goes into some wired sleep mode or it takes time for it to react from time to time. (almost like I/O has time out).

- Still experience some high fan noise randomly even if there is nothing going on in windows

- Sometimes the computer does not shutdown and gets stuck in "shutdown" until i pull the plug or wait over 5 min and it eventually restart.

Again i don't know if these are software issue or hardware and software issues!?

I appreciate all the information.

We would like to investigate on all of that, in order to give you an accurate response. Could you please confirm if the same issue happens on different displays (if you have been able to test different ones) and also if you have tested a different drive on the NUC?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi @Steven_Intel

Not sure what you mean with "if the same issue happens on different displays".

I did try HDMI cable, I.E instead of DP to USB-C  i used HDMI cable but that did not have any impact at all and the NUC does not display the BIOS on the big Samsung Display. In fact addition to that other issue did occur.

- The computer did shut down but not fully

- Pulling out all cables I.E USB, Network etc did not help to shut down the computer

- Only way to shutdown the computer was by pull out the power cable. this happend at least twice.

I am expecting the deliver of a replacement on Friday (If lucky). I can see if the issue does occur with the new device. If they behave the same, i can conclude this is 100% a software and driver issue.

Thank you for your response.

Please let us know once you have tested the replacement and determine if the issue persists.

Hi @Steven_Intel

I am expected to get the new replacement today. I hope i can do some testing over the weekend and I should have confidence if the issue are persistent or just related to the hardware. With that said, I am also certain now that not enough Q/A have gone into the BIOS and def not when it comes to Dual Display setup.

Setup

Plug in both Monitors

- Samsung Display - DP - USB-C  (on the monitor it is connected to DP port)

- Dell Display - DVI to HDMI  (on the monitor it is connected to the DVI port)

Observation:

- Go in to bios Under advanced - Graphic (pls see attached picture)

- Change the "Display Emulation" to Persistent display emulation

- Save the settings

- Reboot

Result: Still the Bios does come up on my Dell display (expected).

Next while in BIOS i removed the HDMI from back of the NUC which is connected to the Dell Monitor / Display.

Result- Computer boot down and restart

Observation - Now I see BIOS on my Samsung display (Very odd).

My conclusion and Observation is that if you pull any Cables related to the Monitor (HDMI or USB-C ) while in BIOS the computer will shutdown and restart.

Conclusion:

1. I firmly believe the default setup of the BIOS causes many issue for dual Displays. Therefore i would argue the team need to looking into dual display setup including better explanation what that Display emulation actually does

2. Option to decide which port should be primary and which should be secondary. There are 4 Graphic ports 2 USB-C and 2 HDMI.

One more issue which is now persistent - When shutting down windows, while the Windows does shut down the computer does not power down.
