Intel NUC5i5RYH booting but no display

Hello ! I have a NUC5i5RYH that I bought some years ago and I just recently bought an SSD and the RAM. When I first connected both, the NUC was not turning on. I opened it and reattached every cable that seemed loose. Now, I have the blue light turned on constantly but no display. I tried a tv and a monitor with two different cables "mini HDMI to HDMI" and "Display port adapter to HDMI". Both displays do not detect a source. My setup :
1. Intel NUC5i5RYH
2. CRUCIAL 8gb DDR3L - 1600 SODIMM 1.35V CL11
3. 250 GB BLUE 3D NAND SATA SSD M.2 2280

Thank you for your help in advance

Hi @José

I can see two problems in your installation:

1. I suspect that the Crucial SO DIMM is not compatible with your NUC. Only modules with 4Gbits SDRAM density elements are compatible. That means that in your case a 8GB SO DIMM should contain 16 SDRAM devices total (8 SDRAM on each side). If I'm not wrong, the module you have installed has only 8 SDRAM devices total (i.e. this is 8Gbits density). This is the main reason that you don't see the video output. Please refer to the list of Compatible Parts for your NUC.

2. In addition the M.2 SSD is not secured to the stand with the screw. Watch the video clip in the Integration Guide.

Hello Leon,

Thank you very much for the quick reply. I will return my CRUCIAL SO DIMM asap and I will get a new one as you indicated. And for the SSD, I know, I just lost the screw and I do not have another one .

Thanks again

You should secure the SSD with the screw. You may find a spare screw in the NUC package box. Any way you may buy one. For example this one.

Hello Leon,
Thank you again for the tips. I followed them and I bought the screw and one new ram KVR16LS11/8. Still no image.
But I was reading again your previous post and saw that you said 16 SDRAM devices but I only bought one RAM with 8. So I guess I should a second one and install it in the other socket ?
Ps : the new RAM is PN KVR16LS11/8 from Kingston (in the list of approved parts)

Hi Jose,

That is strange that the SO DIMM you bought  (KVR16LS11/8) has only 8 SDRAM elements. According to the description of the data sheet it is based on sixteen 512M x 8-bit FBGA components (eight components on each side). Please also refer to Table 4, page 21 in the Technical Product Specification. In this table you will find that 8GB SO DIMM should contain 16 SDRAM components.   BTW, using two SO DIMMs of the same P/N will improve your NUC performance (NUC will work in double channel memory mode). However I don't want you to have additional expenses if you are not sure that your NUC is working. So, first ensure that you have only 8 SDRAM components on this KVR16LS11/8 , which is not right, because suppose to be 2 x 8 SDRAM (8 on each side). If the SO DIMM is correct (i.e. 16 SDRAM), try to install it in the other slot. If still it will not work, I'll try to give an additional advice.

Hi Jose,

The KVR16LS11/8 was validated also by Kingston for NUC5i5RYH. Please refer to Kingston Memory Finder page.

Hi again Leon,

I said there were only 8 SDRam components because of the Amazon screenshot I shared in my previous reply. I tried the RAM on the other slot without success and I took pictures of both sides. I see 16 SDRAM components on each side. Is that as expected ?

Hi Jose,

Yes this is the correct configuration of the SO DIMM which includes 16 SDRAM elements ( 8 SDRAMs on each side).

You should connect NUC to PC monitor, rather than to TV monitor. Is it connected to PC monitor? Some TV monitor can't display the BIOS screen.

If you are connected to PC monitor, try the following:

1. Try to power ON your NUC in minimum hardware configuration: remove the SSD and leave only the SO DIMM. Can you see the "Intel NUC" logo?

2. If you don't see the "Intel NUC" logo. Hold the Power Button until NUC goes OFF.

3. Next, depress and hold the Power Button about 3 seconds. Count. 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004 and release the Power Button. The NUC should boot into Power Button Menu.

4. If after 30-50 seconds after releasing the Power Button, you see the Power Button Menu, click on F2 to enter BIOS.

5. Click on F9, followed by "Y" to set default settings.

6. Click on F10, followed by "Y" to save the settings and exit from BIOS.

7. Power OFF your NUC and reinstall the SSD.

Hi Leon again,

I was trying before in a TV but I tried in my PC monitor but still no image.

1. Try to power ON your NUC in minimum hardware configuration: remove the SSD and leave only the SO DIMM. Can you see the "Intel NUC" logo? >>>>>>> I left only the SO DIMM but this has not worked with the PC Monitor (I tried with the display port + HDMI and mini HDMI + HDMI).

2. If you don't see the "Intel NUC" logo. Hold the Power Button until NUC goes OFF. >>>>>>>>> How long does this take usually ? I tried holding the Power Button but the NUC did not want to go off. I tried for at least a minute.

3. Next, depress and hold the Power Button about 3 seconds. Count. 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004 and release the Power Button. The NUC should boot into Power Button Menu.  >>>>>>>>> I holded the Power Button after I unplugged the NUC because it did not want to turn off while until as you explained.

4. If after 30-50 seconds after releasing the Power Button, you see the Power Button Menu, click on F2 to enter BIOS. >>>>>> The Power Button Menu has not appeared so I was unable to take the next steps

5. Click on F9, followed by "Y" to set default settings.

6. Click on F10, followed by "Y" to save the settings and exit from BIOS.

7. Power OFF your NUC and reinstall the SSD.

Thank you again Leon for taking your time to help me.

Hi Jose,

I wan't to be sure that you have correctly executed the sequence of booting into Power Button Menu:

1. The memory and SSD installed. NUC is OFF and Power Adapter is connected.

2. Press and hold Power Button for about 3 seconds. Count 1001, 1002, 1003,1004. Release the Power Button. NUC should reboot into Power Button Menu. You should release the Power Button before 4-sec shut down override or when the Power Button LED changes color from blue to amber.

3. While you see the Power Button Menu,  click on F2 to enter BIOS.

4. Click on F9, followed by "Y" to set default settings.

5. Click on F10, followed by "Y" to save the settings and exit from BIOS.

6. Power OFF your NUC .

In case that the above procedure will not work, you may try to disconnect the CMOS battery connector and reconnect it after 15 minutes. Could be that since your NUC is old, the CMOS battery is discharged and you should replace it with a new one.  However, because the CMOS battery and its connector are located on the board upper side, the board need to be removed from its case. This guide will explain you how to do this.

Hi Leon,

1. The memory and SSD installed. NUC is OFF and Power Adapter is connected. >>> Ok

2. Press and hold Power Button for about 3 seconds. Count 1001, 1002, 1003,1004. Release the Power Button. NUC should reboot into Power Button Menu. You should release the Power Button before 4-sec shut down override or when the Power Button LED changes color from blue to amber.

>>>>>> I'm holding Power Button for 3 seconds but no Power Button Menu displays. I also tried holding it longer but there was no shut down override and the light stayed blue during the whole process. And I have never seen the LED change into amber.

I bought my NUC about 3 years ago so I will go tomorrow and look for a new battery as you suggested.

Thank you again and I will keep you posted.

Hi Jose,

Did you bought this NUC from a dealer (new NUC in sealed box)? or, it was second hand NUC? If it was second hand NUC, could be that the NUC has a hardware failure and the battery will not help.
One thing more. You wrote:" I'm holding Power Button for 3 seconds but no Power Button Menu displays." You should release the Power Button after holding it depressed for 3 seconds (after counting 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004). Only after releasing Power Button, the NUC should boot into Power Button Menu.

Hello Leon,

I bought a second hand NUC. The guy who solded it to me had no idea of what the NUC was as it was gifted to him. When I bought it, he said he only used it once but he had not bought the SSD and the SO DIMM. Nonetheless the NUC was in perfect condition on the inside and all the cables and adaptors were included.

I confirm to you I am releasing the Power Button after 3 seconds but the blue light won't go off untill I unplug the Power Adaptor.

I just cameback from my local IT repair shop and we tried to boot it changing the battery on the Motherboard but it turns out this was not the issue (mine was also charged). We tried with another Power Adaptor without any more encouraging results. I decided to leave my NUC in this repair shop and I will hope they can diagnose what the problem(s) is/are.

I should have a diagnosis next week. I will keep you posted and again thank you for your help.

I suspect that they won't find much unless they deal with things at a board level, But do update us on what they find, I am suspecting some component has a bad connection on the board that may resolve the issue with a reflow, however have not attempted yet, but am almost willing to try so.

I am having a similar issue to what you are experiencing with a NUC one generation higher.

Check and see:

Disconnect power and the CMOS/BIOS battery from the board, wait 10 seconds, reconnect battery, then power, hold down the power button for 4 seconds until the light turns orange/amber.

You may have to press the power button once, let it start, then when the light and fan die for a little and being again hold the power button till it turns orange/amber.

When it does turn orange/amber, you will notice after a little time it will turn blue, then the fan speed will decrease and the Power Button Menu will show on the screen.

From this you're able to boot to a drive, do almost anything you want that doesn't require a restart.

If you are able to get the Power Button Menu like this, and able to repeat it consistently (by removing battery and power) then you have the same issue as me and it is not a RAM, SSD, BIOS, battery issue and is some kind of other hardware issue.

Hello Mr CheezyCake,

Thank you for your reply.

"Disconnect power and the CMOS/BIOS battery from the board, wait 10 seconds, reconnect battery, then power, hold down the power button for 4 seconds until the light turns orange/amber."

I have tried this but my blue light is constantly turned on and only will go off if I unplug my Power Cable. I have never seen an amber or red light so it is impossible for me at the time to acces the Power Button Menu.

After unplugging all power (battery and adapter) I do not get the amber light, unless I wait for the second time it boots.

The problem persists with a different battery, different ram, can't update BIOS as it requires a restart, which leads me to believe these aren't the cause.
