Hello,
I try to start my Inter NUC 10 i7 FNH2 in headless mode but without success. When a monitor is connected to the device it starts without problem, but without a monitor it doesn't work.
When I start the nuc with a monitor connected, it boots normally. After the boot I can access my computer remotely with ssh, the computer is connected to my local network.
If I start my nuc without a monitor, I can't find it in my local network. After waiting a few minutes, if I connect a monitor to my nuc after the boot, the monitor receive no hdmi signal.
According to this thread it should be possible. I have updated with the latest BIOS version. I have updated to bios FNCMCL357.0058 . But it didn't help. I have taken it from here . I have taken the cap version. After the update my nuc boots fine. I'm not sure anymore, probably my nuc is in uefi mode, I don't know if it would help to take the uefi version. I have taken the cap because it seemed convenient to install.
On my nuc I have installed a linux system.
According to this manual on page 54, it should be possible to boot headless.
In the bios I have disabled the secure boot in order to install linux on this nuc.
It seems possible to add a hdmi dummy dongle to be able to boot headless. But is it possible without ?
Let me know if you need more informations.
Thank you!

First of all, thank you @LeonWaksman and @Steven_Intel !
So unfortunately it didn't work for me. If somebody read this thread later, it should be expected that this nuc doesn't work in headless mode with linux. There is no problem when a monitor is connected. What could happen in the future:
- it works out of the box with a linux distribution. Mine is pretty minimal, perhaps a dev from another distribution will find a solution.
- perhaps a new bios version will be released and it will solved this issue.
I wouldn't spend too much time searching a linux distribution. If someone install a linux distribution for which headless mode doesn't work out of the box, it would be better to directly try to plug an EDID like I suggested and @Steven_Intel .
Otherwise, the user should be careful to choose a nuc which support linux and "virtual display emulation" in the bios. There is a list here: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000033413/intel-nuc.html.
I have finally switched to a nuc 11 and I was able to use it in headless mode. I will probably open a new thread, because there were also some issues. But I was able to solve them all and all the advices given here helped me a lot.
Regards.

Hi @Henrimon ,
Did you updated your BIOS with FNCML357.0058.RECOVERY.zip and then with FN0058. CAP file in two steps as described here?

The update in two steps didn't work. As soon as I start my nuc in headless mode, I can't find it in my local network. I had to adapt your instructions:
- after the first step, I reset the parameters in bios to default, but I disabled the secure boot. On my nuc I have a linux system, with secure boot enabled I can't boot.
- after the first step and a whole reboot, I needed to boot two times to update with F7 for the second step. The first time I missed the menu and my nuc has booted normally.
Even if I have a linux system on it, I formatted my usb stick under windows.
Maybe there is something wrong with linux. Or perhaps with the kernel. With the linux distribution I have, I have to compile myself the linux kernel. Perhaps I forgot something in the kernel. But I don't think so, because when a screen is connected to my nuc, everything works fine.
EDIT: Sorry @Steven_Intel , I didn't see your answer. Yes I need further assistance.

Hi @Henrimon
I'm sorry that the BIOS update in two steps didn't helped. You did this update correctly (disabling the Secure Boot should not affect headless mode). I don't have experience in headless mode with Linux and I want to add that Linux was not verified by Intel on NUC FN. I guess is that the problem is in the Linux kernel that can't boot headless. You should address your question to Linux forum and ask how to configure your Linux for headless boot. One example that I found right now on net: Machine want boot without monitor. This is only an example and may be not applicable for your case.

Hi @LeonWaksman ,
you are right, I didn't think it was possible that I have two problems. So perhaps the first one is solved. But now I have a problem at boot
with my bootloader. I don't use the grub bootloader, I use limine. I will search further and report any progress here.

After trying multiple times I have opened an issue for my bootloader in linux. It seems the problem is not with the bootloader. I have tried to start my kernel with the parameters "nomodeset text" and also "nomodeset i915.modeset=0" but nothing worked. I wanted to disable KMS in linux, but even after disabling kms, I can't still boot headless.
Honestly I have already spent a lot of times, so if you don't have any suggestion about which log I could get or any idea how to solve this, I will probably give up. Excepted the issue I have opened, I have not posted on a forum. I don't know what to search and I fear I would try a lot of fixes without any success. I fear it would be time consuming without any success at the end.
Perhaps a nuc with a display emulation in bios would be better. Unfortunately it's not possible with a nuc 10. I Need a nuc 11, 12 or 8.
So don't hesitate if you have any suggestion.

Hello Henrimon,
Since the OS is not supported, the workaround we have is for Windows:
Enable a VGA display in Windows:
- Right-click on the Windows Desktop and select Screen resolution.
- Select the Detect button.
- Click the option Another display not detected.
- From the Multiple displays list, select Try to connect anyway on: VGA.
- Click Apply. Then, click OK.
- Shut down the Intel NUC. Remove the HDMI or DisplayPort cable, then boot the system without the display connected.
- Connect to the Intel NUC with the remote access software.
Otherwise, we suggest plugging an Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) emulator into a graphics port on the Intel NUC as indicated in the thread you shared before https://community.intel.com/t5/Intel-NUCs/NUC10i7FNHN-fails-to-re-boot-in-headless-setup/m-p/1430390#M95391

Thank you @Steven_Intel .
I will think about it, but I will probably switch to a supported device for linux. I will report what I have done and if it worked
as expected. I will probably give some news next week.
