Issue with Thunderbolt3 + eGPU

Jump to solution

Hello,

I have a Nuc8i7HVK  with a eGPU (Zorac amp box mini with a PNY GTX1660 TI).

All drivers are up to date as windows 10 is.

I have a issue with Intel HD 630 (i7-8809G internal GPU).

When I enable it on BIOS , there is crash at start (black screen) .

Some times, when i remove some drivers (Thunderbolt 3, Nvidia,...) , the PC starts but after 10 minutes, it freezes. Only hard re-start is possible.

When I disable it in the bios, it works fine with the eGPU (Zorac + Nvidi 1660 TI) No crash. Every thinks works perfectly, even big workload on eGPU (HW encode/decode) for hours.

I guess there is a conflict but in windows event obervatory, there is no explication of the freeze. Only hard re-start which is the only way to re-start.

I have try a lot of things, seen on the forum (configuration of the Bios, of the drivers) but no effect on the issue.

I have seen a lot of trouble with Thunderbolt but proposed solutions don't work for me. I'm looking for some new ideas to solve this issue

Regards

Hello oliabram,

Thank you for posting on the Intel* Community.

To better assist you, please provide us with the below information:

  • Can you please share the BIOS settings you disable/enable? (provide screenshots or pictures and specific steps through the BIOS settings so we can try to replicate it)
  • We need to confirm the information, just to make sure that we understood correctly, you said "When I disable it in the bios, it works fine with the eGPU (Zorac + Nvidia 1660 TI) No crash. " Do you mean, when you disable the onboard graphics HD 630?
  • How do you remove the drivers?
  • When it freezes, did you receive any error message or it just freezes?

Please run the following tool in Windows* and attach the report generated.

Intel® System Support Utility (Intel® SSU)

  • Intel® SSU Download
  • Open the application and click on "Scan" to see the system and device information. By default, Intel® SSU will take you to the "Summary View".
  • Click on the menu where it says "Summary" to change to "Detailed View".
  • To save your scan, click on "Next", then "Save".

Best regards,

Hi disable the Intel gpu in the bios and just use the one for the E-GPU

I ended up doing it as it was just a nuisance I also disabled the AMD Vega M via the Device manager and had My E-GPU Video card connected direct to the monitor.

I was running the following till I got fed up of constant Fighting with Drivers for the Vega M.

I am still tossing up whether I should demand a full refund for a product that now has no actual Intel or AMD support for the Vega M chip.

PC specks are
Windows 10 Pro 64 bit Latest version updated daily.

Hello,

Thank's a lot for your answer.

I worked a lot on the issue. The only problem is in fact the Intel driver HD 630. When I put away it via DDU, I can able the HD 630 device in Boot. But without real performance.

If I disable the HD630 device in Boot, the computer works perfectly. With the eGPU Nvidia or with the Radeon Vega M GH.

Like you, I bought a Intel NUC 6 month ago and there is 2 important issues:

  • The driver of the Radeon chip will be no more updated
  • The Intel driver HD 630 isn't working.

I have chose Intel trademark to have no issue. Next time, I will go elsewhere...

Here is the SSU report.

I have identified my issue. It is not due to Thunderbolt E-gpu.

It is the driver of the g-card HD 630 which doesn't work, like for a lot of computer

  • With no driver and card enable in Bios : Correct
  • With card not enable in Bios : Correct.
  • With driver (last version of intel official tool) : Computer freeze

I can't generate the report without HD 630 card because my computer freeze after installation via intel official tool.

What a pitty for a new NUC with Intel CPU, GPU....

Hello oliabram,

Thank you for the report and the information.

We need screenshots/pictures of the BIOS settings, and also please confirm the following:

  • "With driver (last version of intel official tool): Computer freeze"; We need the specific driver version that is being installed, the latest sometimes is not the version validated for the Intel NUC, and by tool do you mean the Intel Driver and Support Assistance?

Thank's for your answer.

I'm still looking for a solution for the issue with the HD630 driver.

I put some pictures of the BIOS (064, new updated). (which i think are more interesting)

I use Intel Driver and Support Assistance. All are updated except HD630 driver and Windows 10 family is updated.

Intel Driver and Support Assistance asks me and proposes to install a HD630 GPU driver. (8681)

If i do so, the PC freezes after installation or after 1st boot (black screen).

I use HDMI cable (high-quality) which works fine. Perhaps, I have to use a DP cable ?

I have tried a lot of configurations, deleting all GPU drivers, re-installation of Windows, old Intel drivers, BIOS option, without Thunderbolt Nvidia eGPU ...

I'm out of ideas : Always the same issue. Black screen at boot or freeze after 1 minute (no information in the Windows event log)

The NUC works perfectly without any driver for HD 630 (neither Windows nor Intel), even when there is heavy workload on CPU or GPU (internal Radeon GPU or tunderbolt eGPU Nvidia). (see configuration file)

But I need a solution because I use a video software which only works with Quicksync hardware video encoding.

I put last analysis with SSU with last update (BIOS).

Thank you for your help.

Regards.

Hello oliabram,

Thank you very much for the information.

We tried to replicate your issue in our labs and this is the result:

  • No issues after GFX update.
  • Disabled IEGD in bios, advanced>performance> Graphics:disabled
  • We did not experience any lock-ups or any problem with the new driver.

At this point, our best recommendation is to check the warranty of your unit, it is possible that the graphics portion of the processor is damaged. For this, please contact Intel Support directly via chat, email, or phone, and they will gladly assist you. You can provide this thread as a reference.
