LED lights on HADES Canyon not working after BIOS update

I used Intel Driver and Support Assistant to update BIOS and drivers to NUC8i7HVK4 after system rebuild.

Now no LED's working at all, completely dark. (Skull, power and status lights)

Followed suggested steps:

  1. Made sure the Software LED control is enabled in BIOS:
  2. checked that LED lights were disabled from the Tray Application, LED Manager for Intel® NUC. Please attach a picture of the settings you have applied to your Intel® NUC.
  3. Checked that the LED Manager for Intel® NUC Service is installed and running.

If left alone long enough the skull will flash in some sleep mode (proof LEDs still physically connected).

Tried disconnecting everything waiting 30min and rebooting.

No progress, suggestions?

Thanks

I'm finally fixed.

THE FIX:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005636/intel-nuc.html

Had to perform the F7 bios update with a very specific .BIO file

That BIOS file sent to me was labeled: [HN8065.bio]

As opposed to HN0065.bio

If you look carefully the BIOS that works for my NUC is:

8065.2021.0205.1909

which is different from 0065.2021.0113.1340

After the update you need to *also* set the defaults and then restart.  Then.  Boom.  Darn lights came back on.

I tried that version and although the issue is fixed for some, it isn't fixed regarding having CEC enabled on HDTV. The LED issues still persist with BIOS 8065 in this scenario.

Thanks for sharing, then I wait for public release of this bios version.

It's getting really hard to understand why the LED problem is taking so long to fix. Has Intel really shut down support for this premium NUC so much?

I'm not blaming the engineers here, they're certainly doing their best. It's often down to the decisions made by managers.

Well, thank you for that, but we are as upset with how long things are taking ourselves. @Chris_V_Intel: any update???

I have pushed to get the solution out ASAP.

I've been told by the end of this week.

As soon as I get something to share or if we need more time because validation failed, I'll post it here.

Hello,

i just updated my Bios to the latest version 0065. But it did not fix the issue, all LEDs are still not working. This is really bad... Only in power saving mode the power led and the skull is flashing. So still the same to the Bios version before.

Did the latest Bios version 0065 fix the problem to anyone?

Best regards Jochen

0065 doesn't fix the issue, instead it caused the issue for me. We are all waiting for the release of new bios to fix the issue.

Jocken,

Where in the release notes for BIOS 65 does it say that it includes a fix for this issue? It doesn't. This update is purely a security release.

Hi Folks,

Just to update, after being given HN8065.Bio by support and performed one time Bios Recovery & one time update Bios in Visual Bios using same file, I got all my LEDs back. So far no other side effects spotted.

Thanks to Intel Tech support for working this out, Hope public release can be very soon.

@Gaz2613

I have a HD TV connected via HDMI and I have disabled the CEC function on my TV and on the NUC and it works !!!!

You're a genius, where did you read that solution ? Thanks

Hi William I read about a different issue someone was having but had similar symptoms. I did a bit of digging and discovered it was all connected. I found just disabling CEC on the TV only is enough to make the NUC behave itself. Must be the way the NUC handles the signal from the HDTV that's causing it to screw up. At least we have a work around for now.

Just updated Bios to HN0065.bio on 4 Intel NUC8i7HVK NUC's.   3 of 4 had no issues with LED's.

1.  J71485-603 :  Good

2.  J71485-504 : Good

3.  J71485-503 : No LED after BIOS update (did get 15 seconds of flashing red skull;  thought it bricked)

4.  J71485-504 : Good

I tried all the suggestions in this thread with no luck.

Please provide the HN8065 bios and I'll test it on my misbehaving NUC.

Same issue with mine  J68196-503. After update lights flashed red for prob. 20 sec. After restart no lights at all. Power saving mode makes them light up only.

How about some info on this !!

If your engineers don't know what is causing it or cannot replicate it then at least let people know.

The whole we are working on it means nothing to us if there is no communication.

Same goes with we know you are frustrated bollocks of course we are we spent big money on a system that your bios update has broken.

How about being upfront with us at what is going on as I am sure every body here is getting more than "Frustrated" at the seeming lack of communication and lack of interest in getting this resolved.

Stop pandering the situation and get somebody who knows what they are talking about to jump into this thread.

Hi @JaseNZ,

I've posted about this several times, though I do agree, it's time for an update, as the BIOS that fixes this-at least for most users-hasn't been released as quickly as I had hoped.

We have a test BIOS that has been provided to some users that has been shown to fix this issue. The part that's taking so long is validation. For some reason, this BIOS is taking longer to validate than average.

As soon as I have an update about when the BIOS will be released, I will post it here, until then, note the following:

  • BIOS 0065 does not fix this issue
  • BIOS 8065 is the test BIOS that was shown to fix the issue
  • Everyone that has tested BIOS 8065, except one or two users, has reported that the issue has been fixed

Thanks @Chris_V_Intel I appreciate getting some info. Some times you have to shake the tree if you want an apple. (no pun intended lol).

I look forward to the remedy soon.

Jason.
