LED lights on HADES Canyon not working after BIOS update

I used Intel Driver and Support Assistant to update BIOS and drivers to NUC8i7HVK4 after system rebuild.

Now no LED's working at all, completely dark. (Skull, power and status lights)

Followed suggested steps:

  1. Made sure the Software LED control is enabled in BIOS:
  2. checked that LED lights were disabled from the Tray Application, LED Manager for Intel® NUC. Please attach a picture of the settings you have applied to your Intel® NUC.
  3. Checked that the LED Manager for Intel® NUC Service is installed and running.

If left alone long enough the skull will flash in some sleep mode (proof LEDs still physically connected).

Tried disconnecting everything waiting 30min and rebooting.

No progress, suggestions?

Thanks

Would it possibly be wise to withdraw the bios?

Hi Intel team,

Jumping on the bandwagon to advise that practically all LEDs (Power, Skull, etc.) on my NUC8i7HVK4 stopped turning on a couple of weeks after upgrading to BIOS 0064. The Front LED 1 flickers every now and again, but that is the only one.

S/A for me is J71485-603

Manufacture date of 06/2020.

For my situation, after disabling the LEDs in both LED Manager app (first), and in BIOS (second), then re-enabling via BIOS (first, selected one of the default colours), then LED manager (second) it didn't seem to make any difference. Then re-enabled LED software controlled in BIOS (third). I did notice that the Front LED 1 still worked changing colours in the BIOS as well as the LED manager app.

I unplugged the NUC, opened it up and unplugged and replugged the ribbon cable (for the top skull/eyes LED).

Plugged the NUC back in, and then found all the LEDs working. Not sure how unplugging NUC from power may have helped in addition to the cycling of the disable/enable LED settings in both Bios and the LED manager app. (Don't think it was reseating the LED ribbon cable, as the front LED incl. Power doesn't seem to be connect to the ribbon cable).

Good luck.

I have the reverse of the issue happening with my unit. All the LEDs work fine to begin with but after booting into Windows 10 and using the unit for a few hours I notice after shutdown all the LEDs stay lit. The only one not affected is the LED which shows HDD activity. I have tried all suggestions throughout this thread to no avail. Only way to recover for me is to unplug the power cord and plug it back in. I cannot say if the issue was there before as I have not had the unit for long and proceeded to set it up and update to latest bios 0064 as part of the process of installing the drivers to ensure everything is at latest version from the outset.

Hi @Gaz2613 ,

I have exactly the very same issue.

Intel emailed me and told me to send the unit for replacement but,

I decided not to send. Maybe I find some settings to solve the issue or a new bios will solve it.

I did also a BIOS recovery via BIOS MENU BUTTON and also a Windows 10 Pro re-install as Intel sugested...

I have tried also many settings in BIOS..in my case the issue is still present (after normal SHUTDOWN the LEDS are kept ON including the SKULL).

I went to power my unit up last night and none of the LEDs came on except for the HDD LED. Only thing different this time around is that I have not used the unit for a couple of days. After removing the power cord and re-inserting it it powered up normally with the LEDs displaying correctly.

I reckon its a BIOS issue myself which is also why I have not requested a replacement yet. They don't seem to be too bothered about fixing the issue though do they?!

Hi @Gaz2613 ,

It happened to me also to start the NUC with no LEDS at all: check my issue posted:

  • Intel NUC Hades Canyon NUC8i7HNK (BOXNUC8i7HNK2) LEDS ON after normal Win10 Pro shutdown
  •

I spoke in few emails with Intel support and they do not acknowledge it's a BIOS issue.

If it's not a BIOS issue then it has to be a faulty batch no. of specific components. Could be a faulty capacitor or resistor etc. I might just get my unit RMA'd.

Wow support on this seems to have slowed down to , Sorry we have no idea what is causing it so we are not going to say anything.

Come on Intel sort it out you introduced a bug that is causing this via a bios update how about letting the many people that have been effected know what is going on and what you are doing to sort it out.

What have you found out so far ?? , I am sure there are a lot of people this has happened to but did not make it here or did not know how to post about their issue.

No more oh we are looking into it , My 5 year old uses that excuse

How about using some professionalism to let people know what is going on.

Hello Intel Support,
many users reporting this problem. But are you working atcually on it to solve this issue? Or should we all RMA our devices? In my case the skull and power on led is working when the NUC turns into stand by mode. Then it is flashing blue. During the bios update the skull lights up red. So why should this be a hardware problem, when the skull is working in stand by mode, but cannot be activated by bios or LED software? Only thing i cannot explain, why a bios downgrade does not solve the issue again. I hope you will help us soon with this problem. Our NUC devices weren't cheap enough to look over it.

Best regards

It seems that Intel does not take this bug very seriously. The bug has been known for more than 2 months now and nothing happens. Furthermore: the download page still points to the buggy version even after this very long time, so people are still installing the disastrous BIOS version that turns off the LEDs in certain cases.

In general, the support for this device is poor. The current graphics card driver is ancient and buggy (video editing software does not work with it), so you have to fall back on an even much older driver from 2019 (!). Isn't this getting embarrassing, Intel? This NUC is the expensive premium model, and buyers expect premium support here. But all we get are cheap excuses.

Sorry for my harsh words, but I'm really disappointed right now. Hopefully there will be good news very soon, i.e. a new BIOS and also new graphics card drivers. My patience is actually already used up.

Intel is planning on releasing a new Canyon this March that includes a 2070 graphics chip and 11th Gen processer!

But yes, I do hope someone can get this BIOS sorted out soon.

@fearlessknight I have been looking at those. Bit of a let down they have gone a bit backwards and don't have as many connectivity options as the Hades Canyon and the biggest let down is that it still has PCIe 3.0 rather than 4.0 like you would expect to find otherwise I would have returned my Hades Canyon and waited for the new one.

Hi all,

I apologize for not posting previously.

We are aware of this issue, a bug report has been opened and we are investigating.

As soon as I have more information, I'll post it here.

Thank you for your patience.

Hi all,
I also join this post, I opened a similar discussion here:

https://community.intel.com/t5/Intel-NUCs/Intel-Nuc-HADES-CANYON-NUC8I7HVK-Win-10-pro-leds-problems-during/td-p/1248064

this morning besides the problem explained in my post, it also happened to me that when I turned on the NUC the leds remained all off ...

Please we wait for a solution, thanks

Thank you for confirming the bug Chris.  I have a Hades that's been running for years with no issue. I just updated the BIOS to 0064 and all LEDs have stopped working.  Googling the issue I found this thread and a few other threads on this forum and Reddit. Please keep us updated when a fix will be released. Thank you.

I am 99% certain that this issue is related to the HDMI CEC function in the BIOS. I disabled it and turned off CEC function for all HDMI ports on my LG TV and I have not had a single issue since. LEDs turn off correctly when NUC shuts down, they turn on correctly when NUC is switched on and I don't get the dead NUC syndrome anymore where the power button fails to respond making you think it's bricked.

Hi Gaz2613,

We are currently in the process of testing a newer BIOS release that addresses this issue, if all goes well this will be posted very soon to our download center.

I apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.

Thanks,

Ronny G
