LED lights on HADES Canyon not working after BIOS update

I used Intel Driver and Support Assistant to update BIOS and drivers to NUC8i7HVK4 after system rebuild.

Now no LED's working at all, completely dark. (Skull, power and status lights)

Followed suggested steps:

  1. Made sure the Software LED control is enabled in BIOS:
  2. checked that LED lights were disabled from the Tray Application, LED Manager for Intel® NUC. Please attach a picture of the settings you have applied to your Intel® NUC.
  3. Checked that the LED Manager for Intel® NUC Service is installed and running.

If left alone long enough the skull will flash in some sleep mode (proof LEDs still physically connected).

Tried disconnecting everything waiting 30min and rebooting.

No progress, suggestions?

Thanks

No problem and I get it.

I often like to wait for actual news to share before speaking, but you're right, it's good to let people know what's going on once in a while, even if it's not much.

Hi Chris, you mentioned 1 or 2 user had no success with test bios. For me it did not work when I perform F7 update, it worked only when I performed another update in visual bios interface.

Hope this info helps.

Thanks @bzylg.

As I mentioned on page 6, after updating the BIOS, you must load the BIOS defaults. Some have even said you must turn the LEDs off and back on again, in the BIOS.

Since I don't have a unit myself that does this, nor do any of my colleagues, I can't experiment for you.

For those that don't have the test BIOS, like @tmscbgh, I do have some good news! If the BIOS passes validation, it should be released tomorrow, Friday, March 26th! Crossing my fingers it passes validation.

I'm off tomorrow, so I won't be able to reply here until Monday but watch out for a new BIOS here. I'm not sure what number it will be.

Hi all,

Thank you SO much for your patience. We have released BIOS 0066 that addresses this issue.

You can download the BIOS here.

Please let us know if you have any issues.

Thank you Chris. I updated to this BIOS and logged in. The lights weren't on. Then I remembered the part about having to reset the BIOS to default and save it.  After doing that all my lights are back.

Yay! Happy it's working for you again!

And thanks for the reminder, I need to add to do that to the download record.

Hi Chris,

Just wanted to let you know the new bios fixed my LED's.   I did not have to reset the bios to default after I flashed it to 0066,  LED's worked after it rebooted with no further actions taken.

Thank you and let the Engineers behind the scenes know we appreciate the work they did to fix this issue.

Have a good weekend!

Andy

Well I can confirm this update DOES NOT FULLY ADDRESS THE LED ISSUE.

I updated to 0066 BIOS using F7 and loaded setup defaults afterwards. I then tested by powering up and all fine. Shut down and all fine. I then re-enabled CEC function on my LG 4K HD TV left the NUC turned off overnight and when I went to switch it on this morning, NO LEDs! NUC still powered up and booted to windows. I tested sleep mode and still no LEDs. Only way to recover is to remove and reinsert the power cable.

Intel please fix this properly. I said all along that CEC plays a part and it has been ignored. I'm starting to lose faith in Intel.

@Gaz2613  I haven't disabled the CEC function yet and have the BIOS 0065 mounted. My NUC with CEC disabled works great, so I think you are right saying that CEC plays a great part of this issue. With BIOS 0066 mounted and CEC disabled, does your NUC work fine again ?

Hi William my NUC works great on ANY BIOS version with CEC enabled in BIOS BUT disabled on my TV. As soon as CEC is enabled on my TV that's where the problems return.

Hi Gaz, I have a LG HD ready TV too and I am in your same situation, maybe it could be an issue of our TV because the CEC function on the TV is more "powerful" than on the others TV and causes the issue... it's only a my opinion ... do you have tried the NUC on others monitors to see if the problem accured again ? Thanks

Happy to hear it's working for most.

@Gaz2613 @William77 , I've asked before, I'll ask again.

If one of you is willing to send your machine in, we would be happy to look into this. But we cannot fix what we aren't experiencing.

If one of you is interested, please PM me.

For some reason I have no option anywhere to send people PMs. I would like to send my unit but I would like a loaner device to use in the meantime.

Hi @Gaz2613,

Agreed, it's a weird PM system.

Click on the envelope on the top right corner of any community page.

Click the pad with the pencil writing on it to create a new message. Then add me as the recipient.

Of course, we'll take care of you, shoot me a PM and we'll figure it out.

Even after four months, there is still no solution. So it's probably a bigger problem than it seems. What are we not being told here?

Just looping back on my previous message. HN0066.bio fixed my issue also (LEDs stopped working after updating to HN0064).

Downloaded file & put on a USB. Updated with F7 method. Reset BIOS Defaults (F9 > F10). Lights are now working.

BIOS 0066 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/30320/BIOS-Update-HNKBLi70- should resolve this issue.

Thanks everyone for your understanding and patience.

If after running the BIOS update to version 0066 your system is still exhibiting the same issue, please reach out directly to Intel Customer Support, here is our contact us information: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/contact-support.html#@7

With BIOS 0066 my LEDs are working again. Don't forget to set the BIOS default values after the update to make it happen.

I'm very grateful for the update, but also a bit disappointed about the time it took to fix the bug on this rather pricy device.
