Lenovo System Update suggests to install Intel Management Engine Software but that seems to fail

I run Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.19043.1415] on Lenovo Thinkpad T470s, modell 20HGS53300.

 

Lenovo System Update 5.07.0131 has been installed. Lenovo System Update recommends to install "Intel Management Engine Software - 10/11 (21H2 or Later)" from Lenovo, version 2141.15.0.2511.

 

After downloading and installing the package Lenovo System Update shows a dialog to restart the system: "Mindestens eines der vor Kurzem installierten Pakete wird erst nach einem Systemneustart aktiviert. Möchten Sie jetzt einen Systemneustart durchführen?" (English translation: at least one of the recently installed packages requires restart; do you want to reboot the system now?)

 

Initially Microsoft BitLocker was enabled for system partition C. That time the system did not proceed to start up after BIOS initialization. The display stayed dark for >30 minutes. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del I restarted boot process and managed Windows to start again.

Thus I disabled BitLocker so Windows reports "BitLocker deaktiviert" (BitLocker disabled) now.

I consider this as a bug of the update package as the user cannot a note on that.

 

Subsequently I repeated installation of Intel Management Engine Software. The update process ran through. However, Lenovo System Update still suggests to apply that update.

 

Windows device manager reports that there is a system device "Intel(R) Management Engine Interface #1". The Intel driver was built on 2021-02-16 and has version 2108.100.0.1053. App & Features shows some components from Intel Management Engine (German environment description is "Komponenten der Intel(R) Management Engine") with version 2141.15.0.2511.

 

Is there another option to verify current version of Intel Management Engine?

Can I rely on the information from App & Features to be the decisive factor for system security? Is Intel in charge to fix the inapplicable information, or is it a Microsoft issue?

 

Does this behavior mean that the Intel Management Engine firmware is up-to-date and Intel System Update just fails to recognize that?

Can I safely ignore system analysis from Intel System Update?

 

As I see that there have been similar support requests before (see <https://community.intel.com/t5/Intel-NUCs/Cannot-Update-Intel-Management-Engine/m-p/1200831>) I would like to ask when it is to be expected that Intel System Update will handle with that?

We understand that you have some inquiries regarding Intel® Management Engine drivers on a third-party system from Lenovo* and you are using a Lenovo tool to update the drivers.


We would like to inform you that we only provide Chipset Software (e.g.: Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility, Intel® Management Engine, etc) for Intel® Desktop boards, Intel® Servers, and Intel® NUCs. For third-party systems, users should get the software and/or drivers directly from the computer manufacturer (OEM) as those are usually customized by the OEM to work on their specific systems and are available only through the official channels each OEM enables for this.


Since we don't provide Intel® Management Engine drivers on our Download Center for third-party systems (and therefore we don't assist with installation on third-party systems) users will need to contact their manufacturers for the latest updates and technical support information.

In this case, our recommendation is to contact Lenovo* Support for proper support and assistance regarding this behavior and these inquiries.
