Modern standby

Hello. I assume if I have Windows 10 set to put my 10i3FNK to sleep after an hour it should go into modern standby? It does not appear that this is happening so I changed the power button to amber in BIOS for modern standby but the power state never changes (stays blue). Do I understand this power state correctly? My HP laptop has the modern standby power state as well and it seems to be working (power button light goes out). Thank you.

STock, Thank you for posting in the Intel® Communities Support.

In reference to your inquiry, we just wanted to confirm a few details about your configuration on the Intel® NUC:

In the BIOS, did you select "Modern Standby" or "Legacy S3"? The reason why we asked this question is because according to Microsoft if you selected for example "Legacy S3" and then install Windows* but then you change it to "Modern Standby" after the Operating System was installed, those changes will not take effect, to reinstall Windows* from scratch will be needed after you change either of those options, here you can confirm that information:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/device-experiences/modern-standby

To verify that information, there is a way to do it using the command prompt:

  • Open Command Prompt window, which can be done several ways, but typing "cmd" in the Taskbar search window will bring it up fast.
  • Type "powercfg/a" and hit Enter and it will show you what sleep states the PC supports.
  • If "S0 Low Power Idle" is listed as available, then you have Modern Standby.

Hello Albert,

Thank you for your response.

I have not made any changes to BIOS since I first purchased the NUC last April and have not reinstalled Windows 10. There have been a few BIOS updates, could the version installed (0041?) when I bought the NUC been configured for S3?

I read the Microsoft documentation and ran the Sleepstudy report and the NUC is not entering modern standby. It is not even going into S3 sleep. The powercfg command does show S0 Low Power Idle as the sleep state. Sounds like modern standby is more for devices that run on battery.

I also have an 5i3BNK that will not enter sleep mode either.

Hello STock, You are very welcome, thank you very much for providing that information.

Yes, regarding your question, "could the version installed (0041?) when he bought the NUC been configured for S3?", the Modern Standby feature should be enabled by default in the BIOS, specially on this Intel® NUC that came with Windows* 10 pre-install.

There is a BIOS version newer than the one currently installed on your Intel® NUC, it is version 0046, please install that version using the F7 method and once you get the chance let us know the results:

Thank you for all the help Albert.

I had updated to the latest BIOS version prior to seeking help with this issue. Yesterday I reinstalled Windows 10 and that appears to have resolved the problem. I had changed the indicator for modern standby to Amber in BIOS and now see the NUC is now going into this state after the specified time set in Windows (1 hour). I will run another sleep report in a few days.
