NUC 11 Enthusiast Kit - NUC11PHKi7C WOL Issue

Good afternoon, the WOL is not working when the computer is in S5 even though it is activated in the BIOS.

However WOL works with S3 state.

Windows 10 has the latest updates and drivers and I have even applied the AUTO_GEN_PEP_DISABLE.reg patch which seems like it should fix the problem.

The BIOS (UEFI) is updated to the latest version 70.

Is there any way to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance

Hello teddy1954,

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities. I am sorry to know that you are having issues with your Intel® NUC 11 Enthusiast Kit - NUC11PHKi7C.

In order to better assist you, please disable Fast Startup in Windows:

  1. Type Power Options in the Search bar.
  2. Select Choose what the power buttons do.
  3. Select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  4. Uncheck Turn on fast startup in the Shutdown settings section.
  5. Click Save changes.

Also, you can try to configure Wireless Wake-on-LAN in Windows® 10, you can follow the step from this article:

Thanks to answer Deived, I had already done everything you tell me:

Uncheck Turn on fast startup in the Shutdown settings section, configured Wireless Wake-on-LAN.

But nothing has solved the problem.

WOL is well configured because it works in Sleep mode but not in Hibernate.

Seems something related to S0 modern power or UEFI.

I read that, so WOL WIFI is not an option for S5:

  • Not all devices support Wireless Wake-on-LAN.
  • Devices that do support Wireless Wake-on-LAN only support wake from system sleep states S3 or S4.

Hello teddy1954,

Thanks for your response. As you noticed, the devices that do not support Wake-on-LAN only support wake from system sleep states S3 or S4 and as you mentioned in your post, your NUC works with the S3 state.

If you have any further questions, please just let me know.

I really don't understand your answer.

You answer me to something that you say to do activating the WOL with the WIFI network and that I answer that with the WIFI network it does not work, but that is extra information for you. It is not my initial problem so I have opened this incident.

Please read my first question about the **bleep** modern power that Intel and Microsoft want to implement, it may be good for cell phones but for PC's the modern power it is a real nightmare.

I just want from S5 to be able to wake up the computer like it did from traditional standard power...S3 and S5 working as usual and forget about modern power S0.

Hello teddy1954,

Thanks for the clarification. I am sorry for the misunderstanding and the information that did not help you. I investigated and noticed that your Intel® NUC 11 Enthusiast Kit - NUC11PHKi7C supports Wake-on-LAN from the S5 (See image for reference), however, since this option is not working for your I will proceed to check this behavior internally and I will let you know as soon as possible.

Thanks Deivid, I thought that this ticket had already been closed, so I have opened another one with the same issue where I say that not even applying the patch "AUTO_GEN_PEP_DISABLE.reg" solves the problem.

In case it can help I have done this test:

The NUC hibernates but the wol doesn't work.

But if I unplug the NUC from AC Power and plug it back in, then WOL works.

Which means that apparently it is the O.S that disables the WOL function with in the new modern standby.

But as I have already told you the patch does not work.

Hi teddy1954,

I have tested a couple of WOL applications: Easy WOL* and MagicPacket* and I am getting the same results as you reported so I am escalating this issue to the NUC Product Team and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Hi teddy1954,

I am still having some issues with my configuration but the NUC Product Team was able to make WOL work with no issues.

Can you please provide me with the necessary steps to replicate your configuration?

Also, please let me know how many systems are affected and include the SSU log file: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000008563/ethernet-products.html

I have previously done all the possible tests and the wol does not work with modern standby in this model of nuc.

I have finally deactivated modern standby from O.S and everything works correctly, I don't want to waste more time in a modern standby that is useless and only causes problems,

I already sent all the required SSU information on the day.

What I would ask is that they modify the firmware like other nuc models have to disable modern standby from the UEFI.

You can close this case

Modern standby (S0iX) has nothing to do with S4 or S5, and S3 is still available if you configure windows to perform  S3 standby instead of S0iX. But it's very unreliable and crashes a lot when system resumes from S3. So I switched back to S0iX.
I suspect there are many BIOS and driver issues with S3.

There are two types of modern standby: network connected or disconnected!

WOL from S0iX (ethernet, did not try WiFI) works only with modern standby connected mode. It won't work in modern standby disconnected!

S4 never worked for me ( ethernet), only after unplugging the AC adapter for a few seconds!
S5 works only when windows fast-startup is disabled!

With S0iX connected the change from S0 to S0iX takes much longer than with S0iX disconnected. It's quite common for the system to take several minutes to reach S0iX connected status.

Hi teddy1954,

I just got confirmation from the NUC Engineering Team that wake from S4 is not supported on either 11th or 12th generation NUCs. I apologize for the time and energy we spent troubleshooting this feature that is actually not supported.

There will be an updated version of the Technical Product Specification that will reflect that, it should go public in the next couple of days.

Again, I really apologize for the inconvenience.

Ronny G

It would be nice if the next BIOS update could disable the Modern Standby that is giving so many of us headaches.
