NUC11 A bootable device has not been detected

I'm having issues with our NUC11 device when using livecd CentOS 7 image.

The live cd image was created with the below required packages for UEFI support:

# For UEFI/Secureboot support
efibootmgr
grub2-efi-x64
grub2-efi-x64-cdboot
grub2-efi-x64-modules
grub2-pc
grub2-pc-modules
grub2-tools*
shim-x64

The livecd image is created using the livecd-creator tool using the below command:

livecd-creator --config=<kickstartfile.ks> --fslabel=<imagename> -t . -v

The live cd image is copy into the VM (UEFI enabled) using the command:

dd if=imagename.iso of=/dev/sda

NO issues

The live cd image is copied to a laptop with UEFI (No Legacy boot), using the same procedures (dd if=imagename.iso of=dev/sda)

No issues

when copying the image to the NUC11, the system returns the following error:

"A bootable device has not been detected"

I had disable Fast boot and Secure boot already.

I have reseted the SATA drive and verify cables are properly connected.

I also tried the following to verify the hard-drive was working properly:

I used a Windows install CD to install the OS to verify the system, and it installs with no issues.

I also install CentOS using the Centos iso (download from CentOS repo), again, installs with no issues.

Additionally, I tried rufus to make the hard-drive bootable which worked as well.

Is there anything special with this system that prevents livecd images from booting up, do I need any special package to create livecd images besides what I have listed above, is there anything in the BIOs that may need to be enabled/disabled?  Please advise, I'm out of ideas at this point.

Hello 619laura,

Thank you for posting on the Intel️® communities. I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing issues installing CentOS 7 on your Intel® NUC.

In order to have a better understanding of your issue, could you provide me with the exact model of your Intel® NUC?

Best regards,

On the bottom of the NUC it has:

Product Code: SBNUC11TNHi5000

Regulatory Model: NUC11TNH

After running into issues, I get on the screen:

NUC11TNHi5

NUC11TNBi5

BIOS TNTGL357.0069.2022.08116.1135. 08/16/2022

Hello 619laura,

Thank you for posting on the Intel️® communities.

About your question, we have validated some Operating systems to work with our Intel® NUC products and we have the listed on our Compatibility website. However, there is no information about the operating systems you are mentioning (CentOS 7); it doesn't mean that the Operating Systems are not supported on the units, but there is uncertainty as to whether or not they would work. You can check for our validated support list here

Thanks for the information.

I noticed CentOS 7 is not listed as a supported OS, per the page you provided; however, this OS is based on Red Hat which is listed.  Has anyone reported any issues with Red Hat and livecd images?  I wonder if there may be a fix for the issue we're having.   I need to advise our sponsor if these devices are not appropriate for the project we're getting ready to deploy (which requires CentOS 7) and perhaps we should be looking at different hardware to procure.

Hello 619laura,

Thanks for your response.

Regarding your question, there are no reports regarding the Red Hat and livecd images.

However, I would like to confirm when you mentioned that you tried installing CentOS using the Centos iso, does it mean that you tried using the ISO on a USB drive, or the ISO was set on a CD?

In case the ISO was set on a USB, it may indicate that the CD ROM may not work, or may need a Driver to work properly.

The livedcd image is a file set on a CD.

Installation from a Centos bootable iso image (from the Centos repository), not from the livecd, works great.

The way we installed the livecd image is via "dd if=file.iso of=/dev/sda status=progress" command.   We can see that the /dev/sda on the NUC11 device contains the image but for whatever reason the NUC11 does not recognize the drive as bootable.  When we tried the same procedures with the livecd image on the following, it works with no issues, except for the NUC11:

VM (UEFI enabled)  -  works

Laptop (UEFI - no legacy boot option available) - works

NUC6i (UEFI- with legacy boot option disabled) - works

NUC11(UEFI- no legacy boot option available) - Fails

Thanks for your support, really appreciate it.

Hello 619laura,

Thanks for waiting for a response.

You should know that CentOS 7 is really having a lot of deployment issues on 11 and 12-gen NUCs, it is not validated, and the Operating System is EOL already. I would recommend you try using Ubuntu's latest available version.

Didn't realized that the NUC11/12 were having issues with CentOS7.    It's going to be challenging  moving to Ubuntu or other OS since our processes are very lengthy and take quite a long time to get new OSs approved.  I will probably have to go back and assess what path to take with our sponsor.

I had some luck with our USB Hard-drive.  I was able to boot from it using our live-cd image; however, the hard-drive needs to be inside the NUC and connected to the appropriate adapter and not via USB.  To make this work, I had to enabled the optiosn below on the BIOS, under storage:

Enabled VMD Controller (Enable for RAID and Optane Memory)

Map this Root Port under VMD

What do these settings provide and why do these settings allow me to boot from the USB hard-drive?

V/r,

Laura

Hello 619laura,

Thanks for your response.

The BIOS settings you reference are part of the RAID setup for Intel® NUC products. For more information about this Setup process, you can check the information in our article "RAID Setup Procedure for Intel® NUC Kits".

However, as I mentioned before, CentOS is having a lot of deployment issues on 11 and 12-gen NUCs, this Operating System is not stable and it is not supported by the Intel NUC11TNHi5. That is why I recommended you use the latest Ubuntu version, as this Operating System is more stable.

Hello Jean,

We did a little bit more research and we were able to get our image to work on the NUC11.

After creating the image using the livecd-tools and our kickstart file on CentOS7, we followed the below article, and the image now works.

https://quorten.github.io/quorten-blog1/blog/2020/12/17/uefi-centos8

I'm providing this information just in case anyone encounters the same issue.  Thanks for your help.

V/r,

Laura
