NUC11 ubuntu USB suspend issue

I have a NUC 11 running Ubuntu 22.04 stock, and I found that when I suspend the OS, the screen goes to black, but the USB power does not turn off, it was kept on. I tried to turn it off via:

/sys/bus/usb/devices/xxxx/power/control -> "auto"

and

/sys/bus/usb/devices/xxxx/power/autosuspend_delay_ms -> "0"

with no effect.

I tried to look through BIOS setting to see if anything should be enabled, but nothing obvious.

Could anybody enlighten me on how to make usb power turn off automatically when system is suspended?

Hello Peng895,

Thank you for posting on the Intel️® communities. I understand that you are having problems with the USB power with your Intel Nuc.

It is important to mention that the USB power when the system is suspended is an Operating System feature, and it should be configured via the terminal. However, I want to confirm what is your exact Intel Nuc model.

To further check whether this is an OS issue, I installed Windows 10 enterprise on a NUC11 to compare against another Single Board Computer with Intel Celeron processor, and found that:

1. The Intel Celeron processor one has option to USB Selective Suspend in Power Settings, and when suspended, USB is powered off.

2. NUC 11 does not even have USB Selective Suspend option in Power Settings, and when suspended, USB power is left on.

Based on the above experiments, I conclude this is not likely an OS issue (Linux vs. Windows).

Hello Peng895,

Thanks for waiting for a response.

We did some digging and we couldn't find a way to do this, at least not from the NUC BIOS/Hardware perspective.

We would recommend that you explore this configuration from the Operating System point of view and have this question posted to a Linux community.

One idea: Enabling Hibernation may resolve this question as the USB Root Hub may be disabled by the Operating System to save power while Sleep Mode still draws power.

Hi, Jean:

I tried hibernation, it doesn't turn off USB power either. In addition, I had to disable secureBoot for hibernation to work for Ubuntu, which is not desirable either.

Based on both Ubuntu Linux and Windows demonstrating the same behavior for suspend, it is hard for me to believe that this is an OS issue, unless both OSes missed the mark on some driver behavior for this platform? It is also peculiar that Windows 10 on a Celeron based platform performs as expected on suspension.

Thanks,

Peng

Hello Peng895,

Thanks for waiting for a response.

As we have mentioned before, We would recommend that you explore this configuration from the Operating System point of view and we recommend contacting your Linux Distribution's support. Remember that there is no way to do this, at least not from the NUC BIOS/Hardware perspective.
