NUC11BTMi9 Network issues on Ubuntu

I just bought a Intel NUC11BTMi9 and installed Ubuntu Server 20.04.3 on it. The install worked quite fine and the machine is up and running. I however have two issues.

  1. I installed Virtualbox on it, but when I try to run a guest VM, it can't get a bridget IP address

  2. The Wifi adapter was apparently not recognized and does not work

Do you have any idea on how I can get these two problems solved?

I understand that Ubuntu is not on the list of supported operating systems, but I was still hoping to find a solution. Especially the first problem is really an issue, as I bought it specifically to host a few VM.

MatthK, Thank you for posting in the Intel® Communities Support.

In order for us to provide the most accurate assistance on this scenario, we just wanted to confirm a few details about your system:

When did you purchase the Intel® NUC?

You mentioned it is new, did the Virtualbox and the Wifi adapter ever work fine on this same Intel® NUC?

When did the issue start?

Did you make any recent hardware/software changes that might cause this problem?

Does the problem happen at home or in the work environment?

Please attach the SSU report so we can verify further details about the components in your platform, check all the options in the report including the one that says "3rd party software logs":

Any questions, please let me know.

Thank you very much for your reply. Here are the details you have asked for.

  • I bought the NUC two days ago at a local computer shop.
  • As I just bought it two days ago, it never worked before. I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04.3 and then I installed Virtualbox. Once that was up and running, I migrated an existing Virtual Machine from another computer and tried to start it up on the new NUC. But it never got a Bridged Network connection. I have posted about the problem also in the Virtualbox forum, but there was also no solution so far.
  • As it never worked, it started from the beginning
  • No changes made, it is with the fresh install
  • I have that in a home network environment

Below is the SSU report requested.

MatthK, You are very welcome, thank you very much for providing that information and the SSU report.

"I understand that Ubuntu is not on the list of supported operating systems", and for that reason, all the drivers that we have available on our official website were tested and validated Windows* as operating system:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/search.html?ws=idsa-suggested#q=nuc11btmi9&t=Downloads&layou...

Based on the information shown in the document, as you mentioned, the wireless card is not being recognized, and also we can see that the BIOS version currently installed is 0043.

So, first, we can try a BIOS update to the latest version 0050 following the instructions in the links below and then test the iIntel® NUC to confirm if the problem with the wireless card gets fixed, we suggest to use the F7 method. After the update, please check the BIOS under "Onboard Devices" and check if the WLAN option is checked and if the wireless card is recognized in there:

By any chance, do you have the option to use Windows on the Intel® NUC? This is basically the latest troubleshooting step we recommend, if you do not have that opportunity that is no problem, we just wanted to confirm if the reason why the wireless card is not detected is because the OS is not fully supported by the Intel® NUC or if there is a hardware problem with the machine in which case a replacement will be needed. If the BIOS detects the wireless card then in theory it should be working fine.

In reference to the problem with the WM, even though you have already contacted them, our best recommendation is to keep checking with Virtualbox support for further assistance on this subject:

Or you can also get in contact directly with Ubuntu Support to check if they have additional suggestions on this matter or with the wireless card not being detected by the OS:
