NUC11PAHi7 no video output after update BIOS ver 0043

Hi Guys,

My NUC11 PAHi7 has problem after upgraded from BIOS 0042 to 0043: no video out put from USB typeC (Thunderbolt).

Current BIOS: PATGL357.0043.2022.0221.1106

I used USC-Type C to connect my NUC with Dell U2520D monitor when BIOS was 0042.

I tried downgrade BIOS back to version 0042 by many ways:

- F7 (updated bios)

- F4 (recovery bios).

- power button

- EFI

- Jumper

But I can't downgrade bios back to 0042.

Now I'm using HDMI cable to connect my Nuc with the monitor

Could you please help me fix this issue please?

I have the same problem with the NUC11PAHi5 after upgrading BIOS from 0042 to 0043.

As soon as I plug in the thunderbolt display over USB-C, the PC freezes or does not boot at all (when I plug in the USB-C cable before powering up).

I, too, tried factory defaults, F4 recovery BIOS without success.

The two monitors still work using HDMI and Mini Displayport connections.

Windows 11

Dell S2722DC (2x)

I tried contacting intel support, so far with no answer.

This is impacting a lot of 11th gen NUCs.

The workaround I found is to plug in something that draws power from the USB C port, boot and then swap the monitor into that port.

On my NUC11PHKi7C I have both USB C speakers and a USB C powered monitor. After the BIOS update broke things I have to boot with the USB C speakers plugged in and then swap the USB C monitor power to that port and it works.

Hello @HienLe and community users.

Thank you all for posting on the Intel® communities.

First, we would like to inform you that due to the CRB update in BIOS version 0043, you can’t downgrade to version 0042 or earlier. This information is noted in the BIOS Update Release Notes for Version 0043.

In order to make sure we are on the same page, could you please confirm if you have tried the steps below?

If not, please try them and let us know the behavior. This is to make sure we first cover basic troubleshooting and common solutions:

1- Check if the Thunderbolt* Controller Support is enabled in BIOS. Go to BIOS > Advanced > Onboard Devices.

2- Make sure the operating system is running the latest version and install any pending updates.

3- Try with different USB-C/Thunderbolt video cables.

4- Reinstall the latest Graphics DCH Driver for Intel® NUC Version 30.0.101.1191 following this process: Clean Installation of Intel® Graphics Drivers in Windows*.

5- If you have a Thunderbolt display, install the Thunderbolt™ 3 and 4 DCH Driver for Windows® 10 for Intel® NUC Version 1.41.1193.0. (Please check installation instructions).

6- Check if there are drivers or firmware available for your monitors (a.k.a. .inf files) and install any pending software.

7- Try a BIOS Recovery using BIOS version 0043.

Please let us know the outcome of the steps. If the behavior persists, please kindly provide us with the following information so we can review this further:

a- Monitor(s) maker and model:

b- Are you using a straight-through connection (USB-C to USB-C) with a single cable or are you using any type of adapters, video converters, or dockings?

c- What was the original BIOS method that you performed the first time you updated the BIOS to version 0043? (e.g. Express BIOS Update, F7 Update, Intel® DSA, etc.)

d- Run the Intel® System Support Utility (Intel® SSU) to gather more details about the system:

  • Download the Intel® SSU and save the application on your computer
  • Open the application, check the "Everything" checkbox, and click "Scan" to see the system and device information. The Intel® SSU defaults to the "Summary View" on the output screen following the scan. Click the menu where it says "Summary" to change to "Detailed View".
  • To save your scan, click Next and click Save.
  • Once you have saved the file (.txt file), please attach it to your reply.

To upload and attach a file, use the "Drag and drop here or browse files to attach" option below the response textbox.

Best regards,

I have exactly the same problem here, after updating my BIOS, my 2nd monitor, which is a drawing tablet (XP-PEN Pro 13.3) connected via USB C Hub stopped working immediately.

1. Enabled
2. No updates pending

3. Cables (and the drawing tablet monitor) work fine on other laptop
4. Latest Graphics Driver

5. Latest Thunderbolt Driver

6. No firmware available
7. Tried recovery, cannot downgrade, stays in 0043

a. Main Monitor (via HDMI): AOC U34P2C, 2nd monitor: XP-Pen Pro 13.3 via USB C-Hub, 3rd monitor Viewsonic Touchscreen (via miniDP)
b. USB C Hub (that connects to HDMI), Vention brand.
c. Update via: Intel DSA (which I now regret doing)
d. Please see attached file.

thank you before.

Hi I'm having the same issue. Won't even boot or get into BIOS with the USB-C connected to a monitor now. The same monitor and cable work fine on other computers. I have tried the above steps, clean install of graphics drivers and thunderbolt drivers but as BIOS also fails on USB-C I don't think that will help. Some details below.

Monitor1: Dell S2722DC (usb-C port)

Monitor2: HP 23f 23 (mini displayport)

Yes USB-C to USB-C cable

Updated BIOS with the Intel support assistant - Express BIOS update

I had exactly the same issue after upgrading from 0042 to 0043, the unit will not startup with type-c monitor connected. Then I unplug the power cord with a tremendous heavy mood, then unplug the type-c and connect via HDMI. On the first time boot up after upgrade, there's a message something like configuration mismatch, type "Y" to enter BIOS.

I tried load optimal defaults, and it's the same issue. Even after I login Windows, and plug in type-c monitor, the system totoally frozen, and I have to unplug the power cord.

NUC: NUC11PAHi5

Monitor: Philips 279P1FR

Also ecountered several times of no response after put windows 11 in lock mode, there's simply no response to the periperals like Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. I also attached a wire keyboard to the USB port, but there's no power at all, the LED is not lit up.

By using HDMI it's less stable compared with type-c (DP), the window size change randomly, HDMI is always an issue with Intel.

Please fix it asap!

same issue on NUC11TNHv5 BIOS 0064.

Type-c ports are unavailable after 0064 BIOS update.

I have checked there's no power on type-c ports, resulting no device to work.

Update:

The type-c ports on NUC11TNHv5 recover to work again by BIOS recovery.

Hi Steadi,

That's good news, what do you mean BIOS recovery? Downgrade to older version?

From the release notes, it seems not possible to do any downgrade.

Please elabrate more on how you made it work agina.

Thanks.

Hi Kougar,

NOT downgrade, same version again.

Local Intel customer support told me to remove the jumper on the board, then insert the USB stick with recovery BIOS and power on, let the NUC recover the BIOS itself.

I have no idea why the BIOS recovery could fix it.

Hi Steadi,

Clear, sounds promising.

Do you have step by step details if that's not something confidential? Wondering why Intel doesn't post a fix or workaround in the thread.

I'm suffering with HDMI, a total mess of Windows experience.

Thanks.

Hi Kougar,

The steps are quite simple.

0. Remove all the devices on type-c ports

1. Download the recovery BIOS, unzip the .CAP file to a USB stick root.

2. Power off the NUC.

3. Open the case.

4. Remove the  small yellow jumper on the board. Record the default position!!! (Before you remove it, you can take a photo by mobile phone.)

5. Close the case.

6. Insert the USB stick with recovery BIOS at back USB port.

7. Power on the NUC. You can see the prompts on the screen by HDMI. But do nothing, just wait.

8. Power off the NUC, following the screen prompts.

9. Remove the USB stick, and open the case again, install the jumper to the default position, then close the case.

10. Hope it would work...

Hi Steadi,

I also found it from the release note, and did exactly as you listed.

Unfortunately it doens't work for me, issues remains the same:

1. NUC will not boot up with type-c connected to monitor.

2. No devices can be found after plugging type-c after windows bootup.

Seems we use slightly different BIOS firmware, my unit is NUC11PAHi5.

Thanks anyway!

Same issue here after update from v0042 to v0043. NUC11PAHi7.
No video signal at all over USB-C.
All drivers up2date - but no video signal after startup (also no boot screen, no BIOS-screen).

Hope Intel will fix it - need USB-C.
