NUC12DCMi9 NVME Gen4 SSD perf degrade after 0052 BIOS update

Jay_W

System: NUC12DCMi9, 2 x 32GB RAM, Samsung 980 PRO NVME Gen4

The SSD is installed in M.2 slot 1 (CPU attached).

On BIOS version 0046, the SSD benchmark can easily hit 5,000MB+/s seq read and write.

After BIOS upgraded to version 0052, the same benchmark result dropped to 1,800MB/s seq read and write.

I tried to move the SSD to M.2 slot 2, got the same results.

I then tried to move the SSD to M.2 slot 3, then it hit 5,000MB+/s again with 0052 BIOS.

Reverted BIOS version to 0046, slot 1/2 perf back to normal.

SATA controller disabled in BIOS.

VMD disabled in BIOS.

During benchmark runs the SSD temperature has been stable ~60°C.

Is this a known issue, or do I need to change any settings after 0052 upgrade?

Thanks!

Hello Jay_W,

Thank you for posting on the Intel️® communities.

To have a better understanding of your issue, please provide me with the following:

  • What is the benchmark program you are using?
  • What is the make and model of the SSD with issues?
  • Are you able to try another SSD on the M.2 slots where you experience an issue?
  • Does the issue affect the performance under normal use? Remember, when running benchmarks, the devices tested are running under an artificial workload.
  • Create a report using the Intel System Support Utility (Intel SSU)

  • What is the benchmark program you are using?
    Samsung Magician 7.1.1
    CrystalDiskMark 8.0.4
    - Results from both programs are similar.

  • What is the make and model of the SSD with issues?
    Samsung 980 PRO PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD (500GB)

  • Are you able to try another SSD on the M.2 slots where you experience an issue?
Today I added another 980 PRO (same model but 2TB size) to M.2 slot 2, same results.

  • Does the issue affect the performance under normal use? Remember, when running benchmarks, the devices tested are running under an artificial workload.
Yes, large file (20GB+) copy operations are noticeably slower with 0052 BIOS.

Hello Jay_W,

To continue with my investigation, and since you were able to downgrade the BIOS to the previous version, please provide me with screenshots of the benchmarks with each BIOS version.

Screenshots with both Samsung Magician and CrystalDiskmark results, with BIOS version highlighted in msinfo32.exe in the background.

That does seem to bring SSD perf back to the expected level. Thanks!

I have the exact same situation as described above. Full speed using the slot nearest the CPU, one third speed using the other two slots. Is there a solution other than waiting 2 months for a new bios?

Tested using Windows 11, Samsung 980 Pro 512, Sabrent Rocket Plus 512

I can also report that only the slot next to the CPU provides the correct performance.  In your quote you say that the issue is solved. What has changed?

Intel sent me a debug version BIOS probably with a fix in it. Unfortunately, the instructions say I cannot share it.

But anyways, before flashing the debug BIOS, I can get the expected perf by reverting to BIOS v0046.
