NUC5PPYB update from 55 to 78 then HDMI stops working

I tried this on two different NUC5PPYB boards, both worked fine running BIOS 55 before the update. I updated to the latest BIOS (78) using the BIOS update method (F2, then from BIOS update screen choose the .BIO file from a USB drive). The update seemed to work correctly, but after the next boot, there was no HDMI output. Using F2, power-button boot, security jumper, nothing gives any HDMI output, not even the NUC splash screen. Is there a solution to getting these either rolled back to BIOS 55 (which worked) or to HDMI output working with 78 so I can see what else has gone wrong?

Hello DAlbe10,

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.

  • How are the monitors connected? Is there any adapter in the middle? are you using a single cable that has the same connection type in both ends?
  • Have you tested different monitors?
  • Did you try the with VGA output?

If you have video output with VGA port, please generate the following report.

Please run the following tool and attach the report generated.

1. Intel® System Support Utility (Intel® SSU)

  • Intel® SSU Download link
  • Open the application and click on "Scan" to see the system and device information. By default, Intel® SSU will take you to the "Summary View".
  • Click on the menu where it says "Summary" to change to "Detailed View".
  • To save your scan, click on "Next", then "Save"

Hi Adrian, thank you for the response!

It's an HDMI cable directly from the NUC to the monitor, there's nothing between them. Video works fine from the NUC through the apparently successful upgrade process and then there's no more video (although the power LEDs behave as expected). If I connect the cable to another NUC that has not had the BIOS upgrade, video is fine. I am working with the board-level product so I don't have a VGA cable; is there a source for them (other than buying a fully enclosed NUK and sacking it for the cable?). Thanks again!

Hello DAlbe10,

Thank you for your response.

What could have happened in this case is that the NUC had an old BIOS version and it was upgraded to the highest version in some cases this might cause a brick since it's not recommended to jump to the highest version without having some versions that were in the middle example 0066, this happens due to some BIOS versions might need to have certain TXE firmware to jump to other versions.

For others finding this issue, the problem turns out to be a regression in BIOS 78. The slightly older HDMI monitor I was using worked fine with BIOS 55, and worked with BIOS 78 *once booted into the OS*, but the BIOS itself would not generate video. When I switched to a newer monitor, BIOS 78 displayed video just fine.

So BIOS 78 appears to introduce some backward incompatibilities.

@AdrianM_Intel it is not reasonable to suggest that customers upgrade the BIOS sequentially if 1) you don't indicate that in the release notes and 2) you don't make the intermediate releases available.

Does the monitor that did not generate a video support 1024x768 resolution?

It was this monitor: http://www.wasabimango.com/bbs/board.php?bo_table=product_eng&wr_id=1&sca=27-inch&sfl=wr_10&stx=

Native resolution is 2560 x 1440 (QHD).

It worked fine with the Visual BIOS version 55; did the resolution change between 55 and 78?

Ok, but does it support 1024x768?

Yes, it supports 1024x768 just fine. I tested it with a laptop set to that resolution.

Hello DAlbe10,

Thank you for your response.

We appreciate your feedback, I will share it for future consideration.

Also, we recommend you to check with the system manufacturer of your TV check for firmware updates since newer monitors work fine with the latest BIOS version.
