Hello,

I own three NUC5PPYH with Samsung SSD 850 EVO 120 GB, 8 GB RAM and Windows 10 Pro.

Today I did the BIOS-Update against Meltdown and Spectre (0068):

I used the EXE-File for Windows. I got no errors during the update. While it installed the update, the LED was blinking blue. After it had finished the LED was solid blue and the NUC tried to reboot. But that's it. The OS does not start any more, only the Intel NUC-Screen appears. I can't even go to BIOS Setup or startup menu.

When I unplug the SSD, I can access BIOS setup. I enabled setup defaults, but no success, the Windows system does not boot.

Then I changed the SSD and put in a Samsung PM851 with 128 GB. With my Windows 10 USB-Stick I could install a fresh system on this SSD.

I took the Samsung SSD 850 EVO and put it into another PC and did a Secure Erase. Then I reinserted it into the NUC and wanted to do a fresh install of Windows 10. But I had no luck, I can't boot the system when the SSD 850 EVO is plugged in.

The strange thing is:

All of my three NUCs have exactly the same behavior. I can't believe that the BIOS-Update 0068 broke all of the three Samsung SSD 850 EVO in all of the three NUCs.

So: What can I do? Do I really need new SSDs after this BIOS-Update?

I am very sad about this BIOS-Update and that it broke my SSDs.

I really hope that there is a solution for it.

thanks for your answer. The prior BIOS version was 0062. The PM851 is a common 2,5 SATA SSD.

Hi

I have the same situation here: NUC5PPYH + Samsung SSD 840 EVO 120 GB

BIOS upgrade 062 --> 068

I can't access the BIOS with F2 if the SSD is pluged in.

If I remove the SSD it is possible to access the BIOS.

A BIOS downgrade 068 --> 062 is not possible because not compatible.

HELP!

Looks like BIOS 0066 is still available on downloadcenter.intel.com: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27568/NUCs-BIOS-Update-PYBSWCEL-86A- Download BIOS Update [PYBSWCEL.86A]

Try doing a Jumper Recovery back to that version to see if your 840/850 EVO SSD re-appears.

I'm having the same problem just received an NUC5CPYH today and I am unable to access the Bios or boot Windows from usb flash drive with the SSD installed. I tried a 120GB Samsung 840 EVO and a Samsung 500GB 860 EVO. I have tried BIOS 0066 and 0068.

the downgrade 0068-->0066 works but does not solve any problem (=with SSD connected I'm unable to access the BIOS or to start the OS). Further downgrades from 0066 are not working.

Is there any intel staff available with a brilliant idea?

As you can see here there are some others who are having problems with Samsung SSD 840/850/860 with this BIOS. I am sure that this is a bug.

Hi

I've tried with a Kingston SSD A400 120GB and it gets recognized by the 0068 BIOS.

It seems to me that the problem might be related to the SAMSUNG SSD EVO drives.

Nevertheless the BIOS 0062 did original work with the SAMSUNG SSD EVO 840 120GB.

For information: I did try a BIOS recovery to 0062 according to:

but it did not work.

I hope Intel staff will look into the matter asap.

You can't downgrade to any BIOS prior to 0066 due to security updates.

One question I have is have all the people who are having issues with 840/850 EVO drives, have you updated to the latest firmware for the SSDs? As for the PM851 drive, this is an OEM version of the Samsung EVO drive provided to OEM system builders like Dell, Lenovo, HP. This drive may not be supported correctly due to special firmware provided for those OEMs. If you took the drive out of an older system, you might check with the OEm to see if any updates are available.

thank you for your answer. I haven't tested if a downgrade of BIOS would be possible, but if you say that it isn't, I don't need to try it by myself.

My three Samsung SSD 850 EVO have the latest firmware already installed: EMT02B6Q. It is also correct that the Samsung PM851 is an OEM drive. My PM851 is from a Fujitsu notebook, in which I put an Samsung SSD 850 PRO because I needed TCG OPAL drive encryption.

The firmware on my PM851 is EXT0200Q. From Fujitsu there is no firmware update available and the updates from DELL or Lenovo can't be installed on this SSD.

I think I will contact the Fujitsu support and ask for a firmware update, but at the moment I would no install it until Intel has a solution for the problem that BIOS since version 0066 does not accept Samsung 840/850/860 SSDs.

same problem here. Just upgraded my NUC 5PPYH with SAMSUNG 850 EVO from BIOS 64 to 68.

Please, make an alert on BIOS download page as soon as possible: Samsung 850 SSD is very popular!

I succesfully downgraded to BIOS 66 removing the SSD, but it has the same problem of version 68.

Is there a way to force BIOS downgrade to 64?

I seem to be caught in a catch 22. The only way to get in to the BIOS menu is to remove the SSD, but then when I try to get in to the BIOS menu via either F2 or F7 I get stuck at a screen saying "A bootable device has not been detected".

Is my only option here to build a new OS on a drive just to be able to access the BIOS menu?

One note - before discovering the BIOS was at fault, I took the battery out to try and clear any potential issues. Not sure if this is relevant.

thank you for the updated BIOS.

I did remove the non-Samsung temporary SSD, then updated the BIOS and the put in place the original Samsund SSD 840 EVO.

Every think works now.

I did not need an OS to upgrade the BIOS with F7 (faulty 0068 --> 0069)

I did just put the "PY0069.BIO" on an empty USB-stick.

I did not have any other SSD or HDD or USB-key connected.
