NUC5i3RYH 3 blinks, won't boot

Hello

My NUC stopped booting and the screen stays black.

The blue power led blinks 3 times, which seems to indicate a RAM issue (it used to work just fine).

I swapped the RAM stick with 2 others, different brands but both 1.35V, and tried in the 2 RAM slots. Still nothing.

A clear CMOS didn't help either.

The power supplies delivers 19.4V, the 5V, 3.3V and 1.35V on board are present.

Is there a troubleshooting procedure for the Serial presence detect (SPD) ?

Many thanks

Romain

Hello romain145,

Thank you for joining the Intel Community Support.

That sounds like memory modules are incompatible or defective.

Try booting with one memory module installed at the time.

What are the specifications of both memory modules? (part numbers)

Hello Romain

Try using just one memory module at a time, swapping it between the upper and lower memory slots. Do this test with the original memory modules, which were in use before this failure occurred.

Hello

I tried with only one memory module at a time.

Each memory module was tested in both the upper and lower memory slots.

One of the memory module tested was a Samsung M471B2873FHS-CH9.

Thanks for your help.

Random thoughts on things to look at....

  • Did you try this with both the original and the new SODIMMs?
  • Have you tried this with your storage disconnected/removed?
  • Is the Standby LED on the board coming on as you plug the power cord into the NUC?

  • I tried with only one SODIMM at a time, the original and two replacements. The symptoms are the same.
  • The storage was disconnected (both SATA and power cables).
  • The Standby LED comes on as soon as I plug the power cord. So does the blue LED, which starts blinking in a pattern of 3 blinks.

Thanks for your help.

Please describe the sequence of events leading up to it being in this state. Be as detailed as you can.

TBH I've got no idea. One day it just wouldn't turn on. Nothing special.

Is there a console accessible, or a more in-depth troubleshooter guide to isolate the fault?

The best would be the board schematics.

Thanks

The original SODIMM was from http://www.hpraise.com/ http://www.hpraise.com/

HPRAISE VRDD3-1333-4G NB (no that's not a typo)

PC3-10600(9)1.35V

I was looking at your SODIMM datasheet at looks to me that both are incompatible with NUC specification:

1. VRDD3-1333-4G is rated to 1.5VDC (instead of 1.35 V requirement): http://www.supertalent.com/datasheets/Supertalent_DDR3_UDIMM_W1333UB4GV_Datasheet.pdf http://www.supertalent.com/datasheets/Supertalent_DDR3_UDIMM_W1333UB4GV_Datasheet.pdf

2. Samsung M471B2873FHS-CH9 only 1GB capacity only (with 1Gbits SDRAM element density - instead of 2Gbit or 4Gbit) and is rated for 1.5V. https://www.datasheets360.com/pdf/3219401055519050485 M471B2873FHS-CH9 PDF Datasheet - Samsung Semiconductor Division - Datasheets360.com

Thanks Leon.

I ordered a compatible memory module from intel's list:http://compatibleproducts.intel.com/ProductDetails/ExportPeripheralInfo?moduleName=Intel%C2%AE%20NUC... http://compatibleproducts.intel.com/ProductDetails/ExportPeripheralInfo?moduleName=Intel%C2%AE%20NUC...

Kingston KVR16LS11/4 4 GB RAM 1600 MHz DDR3L Non-ECC CL11 SODIMM 204-Pin Memory Module

And guess what? It works. I feel stupid now...

I guess the hpraise module just died.

Thanks for your help!
