NUC6I7KYK - When Do Thunderbolt 3 Enclosures Arrive?

Jump to solution

I'm looking forward to pairing my Skull Canyon with Thunderbolt 3 peripherals. Specifically, I'm looking to add an external high end graphics card. But, it seems that so far, there are no PCIe docks available for Thunderbolt 3.

Does anyone have any insight about when these peripherals arrive? News reports said that they would be launched at the end of 2015, but that obviously didn't happen.

Hi Lawguyman,

I would recommend that you keep on checking on other external websites (external to Intel) due to the fact that peripherals such as the one you mentioned is a non-Intel product, one good site is this one here: https://thunderbolttechnology.net/products Products | Thunderbolt Technology Community

I would also encourage other community members to share their findings and feedback, that is really beneficial for the community.

Thanks,

Ronny G

Hello, Lawguyman:

Thank you for contacting the Intel Communities.

Regarding the pheripherals that have been tested for this unit, here you can find them: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/boards-and-kits/000020804.html?wapkw=nuc6i7kyk http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/boards-and-kits/000020804.html?wapkw=nuc6i7kyk

About the external graphics dock, after doing my research, as of now (5/19/2016) the available would be the Razer Core: http://www.razerzone.com/store/razer-core http://www.razerzone.com/store/razer-core

For future external graphics docks (not known when they can be released), as long as they meet the Thunderbolt™ 3 standard, they should work with your system as well as peripherals.

- Premium Graphics with Thunderbolt™ 3 Technology video (products not released yet, external docking present in that video): http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/io/thunderbolt/thunderbolt-3-technology-premium-graphics-demo... http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/io/thunderbolt/thunderbolt-3-technology-premium-graphics-demo...

- Second video related to external docking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFkp0GHz5v8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFkp0GHz5v8

Some additional information on Thunderbolt™ 3 can be found here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/io/thunderbolt/thunderbolt-technology-consumer.html http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/io/thunderbolt/thunderbolt-technology-consumer.html

https://thunderbolttechnology.net/ Thunderbolt Technology has a listing https://thunderbolttechnology.net/products?tid=1&field_company_nid=All&field_prod_os_value_many_to_o... here.

I am rocking the Akitio Thunder3 Duo Pro and loving it.

It is splitting out the third DP signal for the third of four monitors driven by my NUC6i7KYK.

Skull Canyon Thunderbolt is over alpine; external graphics will disappoint.

Intel/Esteban:

I have Skull Canyon, it's good; some problems with audio/video/HDMI but you guys quickly fixing it and that is great.

Other Notes:

1. Matched pair-SO-Dimm DDR4-performance memory is very difficult to obtain outside of America, next version please consider going with full size ram. Many Memory distributors OCONUS are not willing to risk stocking SO-DIMM.

2. I saw a photo of a M.2 -> U.2 riser cable on a Asrock Extreme 7+ board connecting it to Intel SSDs; would this riser cable be something compatible with Skull Canyon?

This NUC, although wider, is half the height of the not-tall previous NUCs.

There is not enough room for a U.2 connector with the lid on.

I would bet that this little guy would be very unhappy running without the lid on.

Hello, All:

Thank you for the clarification on that OEFVet.

-The use of SO-DIMMs is to keep the form factor meaning the size of the unit small.

-Risers or adapters are not fully supported for the Intel® NUC Kit NUC6i7KYK, Scott_T's comments are applicable for this inquiry for sure.
