NUC7i5BNH internal video card doesn't work

Hi guys,

Help me please. I have a NUC7i5BNH, I had installed latest bios 063. But when I connect external GT660 video card (thru M.2 slot), I get black screen on monitor which connected to the internal GPU (HDMI on back side of NUC).

I tried to connect two monitors simultaneously to the internal and to the external GPU. The external GPU works only.

I tried to change available BIOS settings, but I don't see menu item named like "GPU initialization order" or something like this.

In this case I don't be able to use Intel Quick Sync Video acceleration. I don't see video adapter in the Device Manager (Win10 b1703)

How can I fix/workaround this problem?

Thanks!

Hello Landgraph,

I understand that you are currently experiencing problems with your Intel ® Integrated Graphics as the screen turns black when connecting the monitor to it.

Regarding this, To better assist you with your request, I will need to check some information about your computer. Please follow these steps:

1. In the keyboard, press WinLogo key + R.

2. In the Run box please type dxdiag and hit Enter.

3. Click on Save All Information (save it in your desktop).

4. Attach the report to this thread.

Also, please attach pictures of how you have the GT660 video card connected so we can have a better understanding of the setup and the issue experienced.

Regards,

DxDiag in attach.

Riser looks like provided on attached photo.

But I'm planning made PCIx4 connection in the future.

Hello Landgraph,

Thank you for your response,

I was reviewing the information you had provided, including the picture of how the connection is being made and I have determined that this kind of connection is not supported by us as it is using adapters in between and it is not how the M.2 port is meant to work.

I would strongly suggest you to try using an actual external video card, we have a page with tested peripherals where you can find which graphics card work with the system as they have been tested before, please refer to the link below:

I apologize for any inconvenience.

And you even didn't try to solve this problem just by few changes in BIOS (I don't exactly know, but I'm sure it is simple)...

Are you suggesting me to pay more than price of NUC to get exactly what I already have without additional payment?

I think there is only one way to solve my problem: sell my NUC and buy something... more useful for this price. I will buy miniITX or something like that next time. Or "NUC" from those who can imagine alternative (!?) way for using PCIe ports.

Awesome answer, thanks. I and all of my colleagues have expected it. You give me so much help. Thank you very much!

Hello Landgraph,

Thank you for your response,

I definitely understand your position, however, In the technical specifications of the device, the M.2 is only used for storage and not as a dedicated graphics card port.

There is no BIOS setting we can change in order to make the graphics card work in the way you are trying to implement it. You may refer to the technical specifications by accessing the link below:

Hi David, thank you for your response. But...

Your position looks like "don't charge anything from USB port, because it is for data transfer!". Or "we had tested only usb-webcams, so you can't connect other USB devices to USB ports". Strange, isn't it?

We have objective and subjective reasons for everything. What do I mean?

PCIe lines for internal graphics and for m.2 slot are sharing between - it is objective reason, in that case I can't use m.2 pcie lines and internal graphics simultaneously.

But it isn't true, because in this case you can't provide working SSD storage, which using pcie for data exchange. Isn't it? "Add PCIe storage and loose graphic output" doesn't looks like awesome banner

And I'm talking about absent control in BIOS, which allows me to use external video card simultaneously with internal. Just create an internal issue on bios team with link on this thread. Why not? Maybe they will decide to find more objective reason why it can't be done. But I'm sad when I'm thinking Intel's engineers can't do something simple.

I'm trying to share my experience in article "how awesome is using nuc", but unfortunately, looks like I should end my story as "unfortunately, nuc - is expensive typewriter, because Intel's engineers can't add small switch in BIOS because of they did't plan to use PCIe as PCIe" and attach this thread as proof.

Thanks for your attention!

And I have to say big thanks for you, guys, that you leave limited support of external video cards, even if internal graphics doesn't work!

In fact, I don't be so sad because of internal graphics, but without internal graphics I can't use super-awesome MediaSDK and acceleration of on board video decoders/encoders.

I'm using streaming for gaming, for example. It is major thing that I expect from NUC. And I have a lot of ideas how to use NUC for business. And Intel's NUC should had been become awesome "small transmitter for powerful graphic card", but without video decoding/encoding acceleration it is... Just expensive calc, which attached to powerful video card.

You can use an external graphics card via the USB-C/TBT port. This is the right way to be doing this (not through what is essentially a hack). Regardless, I am not interested in arguing this with you nor hearing any more of your snarky remarks or sarcasm, so don't waste your time responding. I am not monitoring this conversation any further.

Who are you? And where do you see "snarky remarks" (what does this mean?) or "sarcasm"? Maybe my english not so good, if you see it... It isn't my native language, please, accept my apologies

In my understanding, when you wrote "I am not interested in arguing" you told us you have no args to do it.

I'm sure, it is because you know: true is on my side.

Landgraph, enough of this. You have been given an answer and you want to argue. There are rules of conduct here. Abide by the rules, or not. The choice is yours. Show some respect for those trying to help you. And, enough of the sarcasm.

- I'm going to buy some food, but rain will be soon. Can you help me?

- Buy a car!

- Maybe you give me an umbrella?..

- No, idiot, you must buy a muscle car!!!

Our discussion in my understanding.

Unknown guys are came here. Instead of technical discussion they are trying to move discussion into emotional, because they "have found" somewhere information, with which they disagree/don't understand. I already had bring apologies, if I told something wrong, because I'm not a native speaker. Or you guys have an interested in sales of expensive wonder-box? Maybe you get a percent from every sold of wonder-box? In this case I will understand, why you strongly recommend me to pay more.

And if you want to talk about conduct. You are really think, that I don't deserve a help, because you "found wrong grammar" in my messages? Or because I'm not english-speaker? Or why? We are engineers, we are talking using arguments and facts language. If your arguments will be stronger than mine, I will agree with you, even if it doesn't solve my problem. Otherwise it looks like "I will tell you something useless, just because I want to do nothing..."

OK. Let's place all dots on i. I'm trying to understand what do I missed. Please, read carefully!

1. I came here for help and pointed on issue: the internal graphics doesn't works when external graphics is connected thru PCIe. I suspect in BIOS source code something like

gpu[highest_bus_address].Init()

instead of

for(i=lowest_bus_address; i

gpu[i].Init()

Is it hard to fix?

2. David suggested to use USB-C port and very expensive wonder-box for connecting an external card. I didn't ask for help with connecting external video to the NUC. Where is an answer on question "why do internal GPU doesn't work?"?

3. I asked David to look deeper on a problem, because I think problem isn't due to the connection interface.

4. David pointed on specification where said: originally engineers expected only storages in M.2 port. I understand it. And it might be an answer, if I had asked "Why do my external video doesn't work?". There is still no answer "why do internal gpu doesn't work?". Also I still don't have understanding: this issue will be with any device connected to the PCIe or only with video card. I don't have a many unused PCIe devices to test it.

5. I tried to arguement my position from my point of view. Because I think my question isn't clear for David: I don't look for a way how to connect an external card, I see an issue with an already connected external card. And I even point WHY I want do it. I believe, that fix of this problem can open new markets for NUC and I will try to tell people how they can easily extend NUC and use NUC not as just a typewriter.

6. I'm really think, that even limited functionality of "NUC with external GPU" is awesome and I'm really thankful for that. Because no one can forbid to code something like gpu[internal_gpu_bus_address].Init(). Isn't it? Are you did find sarcasm there?

And finally, can you drop emotions/politics/etc and try to look deeper/fix an issue with malfunctional internal gpu!? External GPU must works too. I don't want to exchange functionality, I want to increase it.

P.S. I don't have "sarcasm", "trolling", "annoy", etc. If you find it for yourself - my apologies. No sarcasm, I'm really sorry for that. Really. Sorry.

Are you really think I spend my time to write these manuscripts just for trolling someone of you? I feel me crazy in that case %)

Hello Landgraph,

Thank you for your response,

I understand your position; however, what you are trying to do is something not supported, you are using adapters to connect a PCI and then connect a discrete video card which is manufactured to work with the different Desktop motherboards.

This card that you are using with the NUC is not validated or tested, the ones that are validated are listed in the tested peripherals of the NUC which I have sent in a previous message. There will be no BIOS update to make that sort of connection supported as it is not how the NUC was designed or intended to work.

Hi David,

Thanks for your answer!

If it will be helpful, I can share my device with your Engineers for testing.

I'm trying choose configuration for my next project. I'm looking on NUC 7i7 vs i7-8700k, but unworking internal adapter is stopper for choosing NUC solution

Also I'm thinking about connecting PCIx4 SATA RAID controller, because amount of SATA connectors is not enough for me. Do you have any information about such solutions?
